A small, retiring tetra from the coastal drainages of south-eastern Brazil, Hyphessobrycon reticulatus is an inconspicuous but appealing shoaling fish whose finely reticulated flanks betray a preference for shaded, vegetated habitats over open water. Reaching roughly 2 in in standard length and tolerating a notably wide temperature range — a legacy of the subtropical winters of its native range — it is occasionally available in the trade and appreciated by specialists drawn to less-flashy characins. Its precise taxonomic standing has been questioned by researchers who regard it as a possible junior synonym of the closely related H. boulengeri, though it continues to be listed as a valid species in the Catalog of Fishes.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon reticulatus was described by Max Ellis in 1911, placing the species within the large and heterogeneous genus Hyphessobrycon — one of the most species-rich genera in the family Characidae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the authority for the valid name, which retains the original combination Hyphessobrycon reticulatus Ellis, 1911.

The species' taxonomy is not entirely settled. Some researchers have considered H. reticulatus a possible junior synonym of H. boulengeri, a neighbouring coastal-drainage species described a year later. The two share similar body proportions and distributions along the Atlantic-slope drainages of south-eastern Brazil, and resolving the question would require a direct comparison of type material. Pending a formal synonymy, H. reticulatus is maintained as a distinct species on current checklists.

Hyphessobrycon, the genus, takes its name from a diminutive form of Brycon — itself from the Greek brykein, meaning 'to bite' or 'to eat greedily' — combined with the Greek hypho- ('under' or 'somewhat'), suggesting a smaller or lesser relative of that group. The specific epithet reticulatus is Latin for 'netted' or 'reticulated', referring to the net-like or cross-hatched scale pattern on the flanks that gives the fish a finely marked appearance.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon reticulatus is a small, laterally compressed tetra reaching approximately 2 in standard length. The body form is typical of the genus: moderately deep, with a rounded dorsal profile, a straight or slightly concave ventral line, and the large eye characteristic of many small characins that forage in low-light, densely vegetated environments.

The colour pattern is subtler than many popular aquarium tetras. The flanks carry a fine reticulated or net-like pattern formed by dark scale margins on a paler silvery to olive background, which gives the species its name. A lateral stripe of variable intensity runs from behind the opercle toward the caudal peduncle. The fins are largely hyaline or faintly pigmented. Sexual dimorphism is modest: females are fuller in the body when gravid, while males may be marginally slimmer, but the sexes are not strongly differentiated in colour.

Habitat

The species is native to coastal river drainages of south-eastern Brazil, ranging from rivers near Rio de Janeiro south to the northern part of Santa Catarina state; it has also been reported from Argentina. These are Atlantic-slope systems, typically cool-to-temperate lowland and foothill streams draining short coastal ranges rather than the vast interior basins of the Amazon or Paraná.

Within these systems H. reticulatus occupies vegetated areas with sandy substrates and accumulations of decaying organic matter — leaf litter and woody debris are consistent habitat features. The species is diurnal and shoals in schools, but individuals are shy and prefer the cover of aquatic vegetation and marginal structure to open water. The subtropical latitude of its range means that water temperatures fluctuate considerably across seasons, from cool winter conditions to warm summer peaks, giving the fish a broader thermal tolerance than most tropical tetras.

Feeding

Hyphessobrycon reticulatus is an omnivore, as are most small Hyphessobrycon, taking a mix of small invertebrates, plant matter, and organic detritus in the wild. The sandy, leaf-littered microhabitats it favours are productive grounds for microcrustaceans, small insect larvae, and organic particles associated with decomposing plant material.

In the aquarium the species is undemanding and accepts a wide range of prepared foods including flake, small pellets, and fine granules, as well as fresh and frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm. A varied diet supports good condition and colour. Because these fish are shy, care should be taken to ensure subordinate individuals receive adequate food if kept with more assertive tankmates.

Mating

Like other members of Hyphessobrycon, H. reticulatus is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care. Courtship is brief and involves the male pursuing the female through vegetation, where eggs are scattered and adhere loosely to fine-leaved plants, moss, or substrate. No pair bond forms, and the adults do not guard the spawning site.

Because the species is shy and shoaling, spawning is most readily triggered in a calm environment with dense planting that reduces stress. Males may display with slightly intensified colouration and extended fins, but the courtship behaviour is not elaborate. As with most tetras in this genus, spawning activity is most pronounced in the morning hours.

Breeding

Breeding H. reticulatus in the aquarium follows the standard approach for small egg-scattering Hyphessobrycon. A dedicated breeding tank fitted with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or a synthetic spawning mop, with a mesh or grid floor to protect eggs from the adults, works well. Slightly cooler, softer, and more acidic water than the maintenance tank can help trigger spawning; the species tolerates a broad pH range (6.0–8.0) and temperatures down to 59 °F, so conditioning at the lower end of its preferred range and then warming the water slightly can act as a spawning cue.

Eggs are adhesive and scattered among the spawning medium. Adults will consume eggs given the opportunity, so the breeders should be removed after spawning or eggs transferred to a rearing vessel. Incubation takes a few days at typical breeding temperatures, and the fry are free-swimming shortly after. Initial foods are infusoria or commercial liquid fry food, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp and finely ground flake as the fry grow. Growth rate is moderate and the fish reach a marketable size within a few months.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon reticulatus is suited to a planted community aquarium with subdued lighting, dark substrate, and the cover of fine-leaved plants and driftwood that mimic its natural habitat. It is a shy species and does best kept in a school of at least six to eight individuals, which gives the fish the security to venture into open water and display more natural behaviour. In smaller numbers or in sparse tanks the fish tend to hide and lose colour.

The species' wide thermal tolerance — accepting temperatures from about 59 °F to 77 °F — makes it a candidate for unheated or subtropical aquaria in temperate climates, a niche occupied by relatively few tetras. Water chemistry should be soft to moderately hard (12–30 dGH) and the pH kept between 6.0 and 8.0; the species is not demanding but benefits from stable conditions and good water quality. It is peaceful and can be kept with other small, non-aggressive fish of similar size. It is not commonly available in the mainstream trade but is occasionally offered by specialist importers and hobbyist breeders working with south Brazilian fauna.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon reticulatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted in November 2020. The species occupies a relatively extended stretch of coastal drainages in south-eastern Brazil — a region that has experienced substantial habitat alteration through urbanisation, agriculture, and water extraction — but the population is considered sufficiently widespread and stable to not warrant a threatened category at present.

The Atlantic Forest drainages of Rio de Janeiro and Santa Catarina are among the more human-modified fish habitats in South America, and many of their endemic small characins face ongoing pressure from riparian deforestation, water pollution, and hydrological changes. Continued monitoring of population trends in this region is warranted, as catchment-scale degradation can erode the status of apparently secure species over time. In the aquarium hobby the species is not widely traded, so collection pressure is low.
