Hyphessobrycon robustulus is a small, vividly coloured tetra from the upper Amazon basin of Peru, reaching around 1.5 in and distinguished by a striking sexual dichromatism in which males carry red-tinted fins while females show yellow. Originally described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1870 from specimens collected at Pebas in what was then considered Ecuadorian territory — now northeastern Peru — it spent well over a century under the name Hemigrammus robustulus before being transferred to Hyphessobrycon. A commercially bred fish familiar to hobbyists in western Europe under the names Junior Tetra and Panduro Tetra, it is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon robustulus was originally described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1870 as Hemigrammus robustulus, based on type specimens collected at Pebas — a settlement on the upper Amazon in territory then administratively assigned to Ecuador but now lying within the Loreto region of Peru. Cope's description formed part of his broad survey of Amazonian fishes, and the type material represents the sole nineteenth-century record of the species. The specific epithet robustulus, meaning 'somewhat robust,' alludes to the stocky build of the preserved types.

The name was subsequently transferred to the genus Hyphessobrycon, which accommodates small characins lacking the supraorbital pores used to diagnose Hemigrammus. Alfons Zarske's 2007 work confirmed that specimens collected near Tamishiyacu in the Fernando Lores district of Peru — roughly 31 mi upstream from Iquitos — belonged to H. robustulus, connecting the historical type with a living, commercially traded population. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid combination as Hyphessobrycon robustulus (Cope, 1870); the parenthetical authority reflects the original description in a different genus.

A complication arose in 2024 when the species was listed among the species inquirendae in some treatments — effectively flagging it as scientifically unclassifiable on the basis of the 1870 types alone, since old, poorly preserved material can be difficult to diagnose against the many small Hyphessobrycon described since. The hobbyist trade continues to use the name for the Tamishiyacu population identified by Zarske, and the IUCN assessment applies to that population.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon robustulus is a small, moderately deep-bodied tetra reaching about 1.5 in total length, with most aquarium specimens in the 1.5 in range. The body is laterally compressed and fairly stout for its size — the trait that inspired Cope's epithet — with the typical characin profile of a blunt snout, large eye, and forked tail.

The most distinctive feature is the pronounced sexual dichromatism. Males develop reddish to red-orange colouration in the fins, particularly the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins, which intensifies with breeding condition and social stimulation. Females are plainer but show a contrasting yellow tone in their fins rather than red. Both sexes carry the small dark humeral spot and a faint lateral stripe seen in many Hyphessobrycon species, but these are not strongly developed. The overall impression in a healthy, well-lit group is of a colourful, active little fish rather than a cryptic one.

Habitat

The species is known from the upper Amazon River basin of northeastern Peru, with the Tamishiyacu locality near Iquitos representing the best-documented modern occurrence. The type locality of Pebas lies somewhat further upstream on the Amazon proper. Both areas are in lowland Amazonian floodplain, characterised by slow-moving to still blackwater or clear-water streams and tributaries, often with heavy overhanging vegetation and leaf litter.

FishBase records the species as freshwater and benthopelagic, consistent with a life spent in the mid and lower water column of shallow forest streams and flooded margins. Reported temperature range is 73–79 °F on FishBase, with the Aquarium Glaser source indicating tolerance up to 82 °F in captivity. Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water is the likely natural condition given the lowland Amazon blackwater context, although precise field chemistry data for the Tamishiyacu population are not widely published.

Feeding

Like virtually all small Hyphessobrycon, H. robustulus is an opportunistic omnivore in the wild, taking small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and fallen terrestrial insects — along with organic detritus and incidental plant material in the water column.

In the aquarium the species is straightforward to feed. It accepts good-quality micro-pellets and flake, and benefits from regular supplements of small frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, Cyclops, and bloodworm. A varied diet maintains fin colour and breeding condition; pure flake diets tend to dull the red and yellow tones for which the species is valued.

Mating

Hyphessobrycon robustulus is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, following the pattern typical of the genus. Males court females actively, displaying with spread fins and intensified red fin colouration. Spawning takes place among fine-leaved aquatic plants or their equivalent, with the female scattering small adhesive eggs that lodge among the vegetation.

The species is commercially bred, which confirms that courtship and spawning proceed reliably in captivity under standard conditions. As with most small characins, males in a group display more vigorously in the presence of rivals, and keeping a small shoal rather than an isolated pair produces more sustained and visible courtship behaviour.

Breeding

Commercial breeding of H. robustulus is documented, and the species has been produced in quantity by German importers including Aquarium Glaser, confirming its readiness to spawn under captive conditions. Standard small-tetra breeding practice applies: condition a group of well-fed adults in soft, slightly warm water, then move a pair or small group to a separate, dimly lit breeding tank furnished with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops.

Eggs are adhesive and are deposited among the plant material; the adults will consume both eggs and fry if not removed promptly. At Amazonian temperatures the eggs hatch in approximately 24–48 hours, and the fry become free-swimming within a few days. First foods are infusoria and very fine commercial fry preparations, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Growth is relatively rapid for a small Hyphessobrycon, and juveniles develop their sex-specific fin colouration within a few months.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon robustulus is kept and traded under the names Junior Tetra and Panduro Tetra in the hobbyist market, particularly in western Europe. It suits a quiet community tank with other small, peaceful tetras, rasboras, small Corydoras, and dwarf cichlids. As a shoaling species it is best kept in groups of six or more, where the males display against one another and maintain their fin colour.

A tank of 23.5 in or more provides adequate swimming space. Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water in the 73–82 °F range suits it well, and the species appreciates planted areas with some open water and subdued or varied lighting. Its small size and undemanding feeding habit make it an accessible species for intermediate hobbyists, and the visible sexual dichromatism gives a well-maintained group a distinctive look that plain-finned tetras lack. Commercially bred stock is readily available and generally robust.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon robustulus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 23 April 2014. FishBase notes the species has high resilience, with a minimum population doubling time of less than 15 months — a characteristic of small, fast-reproducing characins that supports a stable population trajectory under normal conditions.

The species has modest commercial significance in the aquarium trade and limited fisheries use. Its occurrence across the upper Amazon basin of Peru, a region with substantial intact Amazonian floodplain habitat, provides a buffer against local habitat pressures. No specific threats are flagged in the available data. The taxonomic uncertainty raised by the 2024 species inquirendae listing does not affect the conservation assessment, which applies to the identifiable Tamishiyacu population, and commercial breeding reduces pressure on wild populations.
