Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon roseus was described by Jacques Géry in 1960. The type locality is near Gaa Kaba on the Maroni River in French Guiana. The species was subsequently also placed under the synonym Megalamphodus roseus, a name sometimes encountered in older hobbyist literature, but the valid combination accepted by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Hyphessobrycon roseus (Géry, 1960), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the original placement in a different genus.
The genus Hyphessobrycon is one of the largest within Characidae, encompassing hundreds of small to medium-sized tetras distributed across tropical South America and Central America. Within the genus, H. roseus belongs to a cluster of small, lightly built species from the Guiana Shield drainages. Its congeners in the same broad region include several other ornamental tetras whose ranges partly overlap with its own.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon roseus is a very small tetra, reaching around 0.5 in standard length (SL) at most, with total length rarely exceeding 1 in. The body is slim and laterally compressed in the typical hyphessobrycon fashion, giving the fish a neat, torpedo-like outline at rest that fans into a vivid little display when the fins are spread.
Colouration is the species' chief appeal. The flanks range from rose to light yellow depending on light and mood, while the head flushes a brighter, more saturated pink. The fins are translucent to lightly reddish. Sexual dimorphism is subtle at first glance but clear on inspection: females are deeper-bodied and slightly larger, with a more rounded ventral profile when in breeding condition, while males are slimmer.
Habitat
This species occupies the upper tributary reaches of coastal Guiana Shield drainages — the Courantyne River of Suriname east through the Maroni, Sinnamary, and Oyapock/Oiapoque river systems as far as the French Guiana–Brazil border. It frequents small, shaded igarapés and forest streams where canopy cover is dense, current is slow to moderate, substrate is sandy, and the bottom is layered with fallen leaves, branches, and organic debris.
The water in these habitats is characteristically soft and acidic, stained brown by humic compounds released from decaying leaf litter. Seriously Fish records temperatures of 68–82 °F, with a preference for 73–81 °F; pH is typically 5.0–7.0, and hardness is low. These conditions reflect the low-mineral, high-tannin character of Guiana Shield blackwater streams, where dissolved solids are scarce and biological productivity is concentrated in the forest-litter layer rather than the water column.
Feeding
In the wild Hyphessobrycon roseus is an opportunistic omnivore, picking small invertebrates, crustaceans, algae, and fallen organic matter from the water column and substrate. Given the sparse productivity of acidic igarapés, it likely takes whatever small prey presents itself — micro-crustaceans, insect larvae, surface insects — alongside algal films scraped from submerged wood and leaves.
In the aquarium it accepts a varied diet readily. Live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, mosquito larvae, and bloodworm are eagerly taken and support good colour and breeding condition. Finely crushed or micro-pellet dry foods work well for daily maintenance. Because of its very small mouth, food particle size matters: offer appropriately fine-grade foods and avoid pellets sized for larger tetras.
Mating
Hyphessobrycon roseus is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, following the reproductive pattern typical for small Hyphessobrycon. Males court females with brief fin displays and chases, herding receptive females toward fine-leaved plants or other spawning substrate. Spawning itself is rapid, with eggs scattered and left adhering to plants or sinking to the substrate.
The species shows no pair bond and no territorial defence of eggs or fry. Under aquarium conditions, conditioning several fish together and providing soft, acidic water with fine-leaved plants encourages spawning behaviour. Morning light often triggers the most active display and spawning activity.
Breeding
Breeding Hyphessobrycon roseus in captivity is achieved most reliably in a dedicated spawning vessel of 5.5–10 US gal filled with soft, acidic water (pH 5.5–6.5, temperature 77–81 °F). Dense clumps of fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or spawning mops provide the adhesive eggs a surface to cling to and shelter them from the adults, which will eat their own spawn if given access.
AquaInfo records that eggs hatch in approximately 24 hours, with fry becoming free-swimming after a further 4–5 days. First foods must be very fine: infusoria or liquid fry food at the outset, progressing to finely ground dry food and then to freshly hatched Artemia nauplii as the fry grow. The adults should be removed as soon as spawning is complete.
In the aquarium
The Yellow Phantom Tetra is an excellent candidate for the planted nano aquarium. Its diminutive size — under 1 in — makes it suitable for tanks as small as 10–15 US gal when kept in a proper school; a group of six to ten individuals allows the fish to school naturally and shows their rosy colouration to best effect. Given their small mouths and gentle temperament, they are best paired with similarly sized, peaceful tankmates: other small tetras, Corydoras pygmaeus, small rasboras, or dwarf shrimp colonies (though adults may pick at shrimp larvae).
Water chemistry should reflect the species' Guiana Shield origins: soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.0, low hardness), temperature 73–81 °F. Heavy planting, dark substrate, and a small amount of driftwood or leaf litter (which releases tannins and lowers pH) will heighten colour and settle the fish into natural behaviour. Filtration should be gentle — a small sponge filter works well — as the species comes from near-still water and strong flow stresses it. Life expectancy in a well-maintained aquarium is three to four years. AquaInfo notes that a group of six to ten is the minimum for confident schooling behaviour.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon roseus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 20 December 2020. The species has a reasonably broad distribution across multiple Guiana Shield drainages — the Courantyne, Maroni, Sinnamary, and Oyapock river systems spanning Suriname, French Guiana, and northern Brazil — which provides a degree of resilience against localised threats.
The primary risks to species in these drainages include deforestation of riparian zones, which degrades the shaded, leaf-litter habitat that small tetras depend on, and gold-mining activities that increase sediment loads and mercury contamination in rivers of the Guiana Shield. For H. roseus specifically, no acute population declines are documented, and the LC assessment reflects current stability. Most specimens in the trade are wild-caught from the Guiana region; supporting captive breeding reduces pressure on wild stocks.
