Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon rutiliflavidus was described by Carvalho, Langeani, Miyazawa, and Troy in 2008, with the original description published in Zootaxa 1674(1):39–49. The type locality is córrego Pipa, a small stream in the upper Rio Paraguai drainage near Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The valid name, as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Hyphessobrycon rutiliflavidus Carvalho, Langeani, Miyazawa & Troy, 2008.
The species belongs to the large and heterogeneous genus Hyphessobrycon within the family Characidae. Hyphessobrycon is one of the most species-rich characid genera, and the placement of many of its members awaits comprehensive phylogenetic revision. H. rutiliflavidus is diagnosed by a suite of characters that set it apart from most congeners: a black humeral spot with diffuse margins, a caudal-peduncle blotch, a conspicuous midlateral stripe that extends posteriorly into the middle caudal rays, and a striking sexual dichromatism in fin colour. No common English name has been formally established for the species.
Morphology
H. rutiliflavidus is a small, laterally compressed characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 2.5 in. The body plan is typical for the genus — an ovoid, moderately deep profile, large eyes, and a terminal mouth. Meristic counts recorded from the original description include a dorsal-fin formula of ii,9; anal fin iii,15–iv,19 (mode iv,17); pectoral fin i,9–i,13; pelvic fin i,5–i,7; and a vertebral count of 32–33. The maxilla bears 2–5 teeth (mode 3), and the upper jaw length is 42.3–49.5% of head length.
The most striking feature is the sexual dimorphism in fin pigmentation. Males display reddish-orange coloration in the unpaired and paired fins, producing a warm, glowing appearance. Females carry a distinctly yellowish fin coloration. Both sexes share the same body-stripe pattern: a black humeral spot (with characteristically diffuse posterior and ventral tips), a dark caudal-peduncle blotch, and a conspicuous midlateral stripe that becomes progressively more defined toward the posterior of the body, ultimately extending into the middle rays of the caudal fin. This combination of markings is regarded as diagnostic for the species within Hyphessobrycon.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Serra de São Vicente region of Mato Grosso, Brazil, and is known from córrego Pipa and a small number of additional collection points near the type locality, all within the upper Rio Paraguai drainage at approximately 1572 ft elevation. The stream system drains the cerrado highlands of the Serra region, an area the IUCN notes is largely unsuitable for agriculture, which has helped preserve the intact riparian and aquatic habitat.
H. rutiliflavidus prefers lentic or near-lentic microhabitats within these streams — slow or still sections rather than fast-flowing riffles — over silt and rock substrates. The water is cold and transparent by Neotropical lowland standards, reflecting the elevated, seasonally temperate plateau environment. Syntopic associates recorded at the type locality include Parodon aff. nasus, Astyanax asuncionensis, Knodus chapadae, Hypostomus sp., and Ancistrus sp. — a community of generalist mid-elevation stream fishes. The species is described as rare and uncommon across its narrow range, and the IUCN notes its occurrence in just three specimen lots from two localities near the type site.
Feeding
Field data from the type locality indicate that H. rutiliflavidus is an opportunistic omnivore with a diet spanning vascular plant material, algae, and arthropods. The arthropod component includes Araneae (spiders) and Hymenoptera-Formicidae (ants), suggesting the fish takes surface-drifting terrestrial invertebrates as well as aquatic prey — a feeding strategy common to many small stream characids in cerrado and gallery-forest habitats.
The inclusion of vascular plant material and algae in the gut contents points to a degree of herbivory or detritivory typical of stream fish in nutrient-limited highland waters. In captivity, small Hyphessobrycon species of comparable ecology generally accept a wide range of prepared foods supplemented with live or frozen invertebrates, though specific aquarium husbandry observations for H. rutiliflavidus are sparse given its rarity in the hobby.
Mating
No detailed observations of courtship behaviour in H. rutiliflavidus have been published. Based on the biology of small Hyphessobrycon species generally and the cold-water stream habitat it occupies, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner. The pronounced sexual dichromatism — males with reddish-orange fins, females with yellowish fins — implies that fin coloration plays a role in intraspecific signalling and mate choice, as is common in sexually dimorphic characids.
Males would be expected to court females with fin displays, with spawning taking place among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or other submerged cover, and with no parental care following egg deposition. The adhesive nature of the eggs has not been confirmed for this species specifically but is typical for the genus. Spawning seasonality in the wild has not been studied.
Breeding
Captive breeding records for H. rutiliflavidus are essentially absent from the published or hobby literature, reflecting its extreme rarity in the aquarium trade. By analogy with ecologically similar Hyphessobrycon species from cool highland streams, spawning would likely take place over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with small adhesive eggs scattered and left without parental attention. Adults would be expected to consume eggs if given access to them, requiring separation of spawning adults from the clutch.
The cold-water ecology of the species — it inhabits streams at roughly 1572 ft elevation with notably cool, transparent water — suggests that breeding temperatures lower than the tropical norm may be appropriate or required to trigger spawning and support healthy embryonic development. Fry would presumably be very small at hatching and require appropriately fine first foods. These details remain speculative; confirmed breeding husbandry awaits hobbyist or institutional experience with captive specimens.
In the aquarium
H. rutiliflavidus is extremely rarely encountered in the aquarium hobby, and captive-husbandry information is correspondingly sparse. The species' cold-water ecology — clear, cool highland streams in the Brazilian cerrado — indicates it is likely unsuitable for standard tropical aquarium temperatures and would fare better in a cooler setup, broadly analogous to the conditions kept for other cool-adapted South American stream characids.
Like most Hyphessobrycon species it would presumably do best in a group of six or more, in well-oxygenated, clear water with moderate flow, a dark substrate, and fine-leaved vegetation to provide cover and mimic the stream environment. Diet should include small live or frozen invertebrates alongside high-quality prepared foods. Given the species' restricted wild range and apparent rarity, acquisition of ethically sourced, ideally tank-bred specimens would be strongly preferable to wild-caught individuals. Any hobbyist keeping this species successfully would provide a valuable contribution to the sparse body of knowledge about it.
Conservation
H. rutiliflavidus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in the 2022-1 update based on an evaluation dated 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The assessment notes the species is rare and uncommon, with known occurrence from only córrego Pipa and two additional specimen lots close to the type locality within the Serra de São Vicente, Mato Grosso.
The Least Concern designation reflects the absence of identified significant direct threats to the population at the time of assessment, supported importantly by the fact that the Serra de São Vicente region is largely unsuitable for agriculture, leaving the highland stream habitat in relatively intact condition. The species is additionally protected within the Área de Proteção Ambiental da Chapada dos Guimarães. Population trend is listed as unknown. Despite the LC status, the species' extreme range restriction to a single stream system and its rarity make it inherently vulnerable to any future habitat disturbance, pollution, or hydrological change in this small catchment.
