Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon savagei was described by William A. Bussing in 1967. The species is placed in the genus Hyphessobrycon, one of the largest and most taxonomically complex genera in the family Characidae, and its valid name as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Hyphessobrycon savagei Bussing, 1967. Because the species was described directly in Hyphessobrycon and has not been moved, no parenthetical authority is required.

The specific epithet savagei is a patronym, most likely honouring a colleague or sponsor of the describer, though the original description details are not reproduced in the sources available for this article. No subsequent revision has synonymised or reclassified the species, and it remains the sole representative of its name combination in the genus.

Morphology

As a Central American lowland species it may tolerate a somewhat broader water-chemistry range than Amazonian tetras, but firm data on captive water requirements are not available. Should specimens become available, a small school of six or more in a species-appropriate planted aquarium with peaceful tankmates of comparable size would represent best practice. The species' rarity in trade, combined with its Vulnerable conservation status, makes wild-caught acquisition inadvisable; any captive-bred stock would be far preferable.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon savagei is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii), based on an assessment published in 2020 from work conducted in 2019 by Tim Lyons (Albuquerque Biopark) and Arturo Angulo (Universidad de Costa Rica). The restricted extent of occurrence — a narrow Pacific coastal lowland strip in Costa Rica — is the primary basis for the threatened category.

Identified threats include habitat loss and degradation driven by urban and residential development, logging, dam construction, water pollution, and agricultural runoff across the species' small range. Population trend is listed as unknown. The IUCN assessment notes that the species occurs in at least one protected area that has a regional management plan in place, providing a degree of legal protection for part of its range. Given the ongoing development pressure on Costa Rica's Pacific lowlands, the adequacy of existing protection for the long-term persistence of wild populations remains uncertain.
