Hyphessobrycon schauenseei is a small, little-known tetra from the Rio Inhangapi drainage of Pará state in northern Brazil, reaching only about 1 in standard length. Described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1926 and named for the naturalist Rodolphe Meyer de Schauensee, it has attracted little attention in the aquarium trade and remains poorly documented in the scientific literature — its IUCN status is Data Deficient, reflecting the near-absence of population or ecological data rather than any known threat. For aquarists who encounter it, it offers the quiet appeal of a shoaling characid from an understudied Amazonian tributary.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon schauenseei was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1926, in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. The type locality is the Rio Inhangapy (also rendered Inhangapi), a small drainage in Pará state in the lower Amazon basin of Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) treats the name as valid within Hyphessobrycon, and Fowler is cited without parentheses as the authority, Fowler, 1926, because the species has remained in the genus where it was originally described.

Hyphessobrycon is one of the largest genera among the characids, encompassing scores of small tetras across tropical South America. The genus name derives from the Greek hyphesson (lesser, smaller) combined with the suffix -brycon (from bryko, to bite), evoking a diminutive relationship to the larger piranha-related genus Brycon. Within Hyphessobrycon, H. schauenseei has not been placed in a well-studied species group; the genus is broadly paraphyletic and its internal systematics remain an active area of research.

The species epithet schauenseei is a patronym honouring Dr Rodolphe Meyer de Schauensee (1901–1984), a Philadelphia ornithologist and naturalist associated with the Academy of Natural Sciences, who contributed to knowledge of South American vertebrates more broadly.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon schauenseei is a slender, small tetra reaching approximately 1 in standard length, which places it at the smaller end of the genus. Like other members of Hyphessobrycon it has the typical characid body plan: a laterally compressed, fusiform profile, a single dorsal fin, an adipose fin, a forked tail, and the small, toothed premaxillary that gives the family its characteristic neat bite.

Detailed colour notes from wild-caught material are sparse in the available literature. Hyphessobrycon species in this size range typically display silvery to translucent bodies with varying degrees of a lateral stripe or humeral spot, but the specific pattern of H. schauenseei is not thoroughly characterised in accessible sources. The data-sparse nature of this species means that morphological descriptions are largely confined to the original 1926 account and have not been supplemented by extensive subsequent revision.

Habitat

The only confirmed type locality for Hyphessobrycon schauenseei is the Rio Inhangapi (Inhangapy) in Pará state, Brazil — a relatively small tributary system draining into the lower Amazon basin. Pará state spans a vast area of the eastern Amazon, and the Inhangapi watershed lies in the transitional zone between the floodplain lowlands and more upland terrain.

No detailed habitat survey data for this species have been reported in the sources available. By comparison with closely related small Hyphessobrycon species from similar Amazonian tributaries, the species likely inhabits slow to moderately flowing water with abundant marginal vegetation, leaf litter, and shaded conditions, where soft, acidic, low-conductivity blackwater or clearwater conditions are typical. The absence of published habitat data contributes directly to its Data Deficient IUCN status, as neither population size nor specific habitat requirements can currently be assessed.

Feeding

No dietary studies specific to Hyphessobrycon schauenseei are recorded in the available literature. Small tetras of this genus are generally opportunistic micro-predators and omnivores in the wild, feeding on tiny invertebrates — microcrustaceans, insect larvae, and worms — as well as small amounts of plant material, algae, and organic detritus that drift through the water column or settle among leaf litter.

In captivity, Hyphessobrycon species of comparable size accept a broad diet of small prepared foods including micro pellets and finely crushed flake, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and micro-worms. Variety and inclusion of live or frozen invertebrate food supports colour and conditioning.

Mating

Hyphessobrycon schauenseei has not been bred in the aquarium hobby to any documented degree, and no specific mating observations have been published. Based on the reproductive biology of the genus, it is expected to follow the egg-scattering pattern typical of small characids: males court females with lateral displays and brief chasing behaviour, and spawning occurs among fine-leaved vegetation or submerged roots where adhesive eggs are deposited and immediately abandoned.

Like other Hyphessobrycon species, it is presumed to offer no parental care; the adults likely treat eggs as prey if not separated. Sexual dimorphism — a fuller abdomen in gravid females and sometimes slightly brighter colouration in males — is the norm in the genus, though specific observations for this species are lacking.

Breeding

There are no published captive breeding reports for Hyphessobrycon schauenseei in the hobbyist or scientific literature reviewed. Based on the standard reproductive mode of small Hyphessobrycon, breeding can be extrapolated: pairs or trios in a well-planted, dimly lit aquarium with soft, slightly acidic water would be the recommended approach, with fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops as the egg-deposition substrate.

Adhesive eggs would be expected to hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming a few days later and requiring very small first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial fry food — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Adults should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation. Given the rarity of the species in the trade, captive breeding records, if they exist, remain unpublished.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon schauenseei is essentially absent from the mainstream aquarium trade and is unlikely to be encountered outside specialist importers or collectors with a particular interest in rare Amazonian characids. No dedicated care profiles exist for the species. Aquarists keeping similar small, soft-water Hyphessobrycon tetras from Pará and neighbouring states would apply the same framework: a well-filtered aquarium with soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.5–7.0, low conductivity), temperatures in the range 73–82 °F, and a densely planted setup with subdued lighting and dark substrate to bring out natural colouration and reduce stress.

As a shoaling species it should be kept in groups of at least six to eight individuals. Tankmates should be small and peaceful — other small tetras, pygmy corydoras, and similarly sized soft-water fish. Given how little is documented about this species, aquarists who do acquire specimens are in a position to contribute genuinely useful observations on behaviour, colouration, and reproductive biology to the hobby literature.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon schauenseei is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment published in 2021 by assessor Flávio Lima of the Universidade Estadual de Campinas. A Data Deficient designation does not indicate that the species is unthreatened; it means that insufficient information exists to make a reliable assessment of its extinction risk.

The species is known from a restricted type locality in Pará state, Brazil — the Rio Inhangapi — and has not been the subject of dedicated surveys or population studies. The lower Amazon region of Pará faces ongoing pressures including deforestation, agricultural expansion, and associated changes to water quality and hydrology. Until systematic surveys establish the species' current range, population size, and habitat condition, its conservation status will remain uncertain. The Data Deficient listing calls for additional research rather than signalling safety.
