The black-line tetra is a small, hardy characid from the Amazon basin whose understated elegance has earned it a steady place in the aquarium hobby for decades. A silver-bodied fish with a jet-black lateral stripe running from behind the gill cover to the base of the tail, Hyphessobrycon scholzei is easy to maintain, straightforward to breed, and peaceful enough to share a community aquarium with nearly anything of similar scale. Its quiet charm lies precisely in that restraint — no extravagant finnage, no neon flash, just clean graphic contrast on a fish that asks little and delivers consistent appeal.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon scholzei was described by Ernst Ahl in 1937 and has remained in the large, heterogeneous genus Hyphessobrycon since. The genus sits within the family Characidae, the principal family of New World characiforms, and encompasses hundreds of small tetras distributed across tropical and subtropical South and Central America. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Hyphessobrycon scholzei Ahl, 1937 as the valid combination; no subsequent revision has moved it to a different genus.

The species belongs to a loose assemblage of Hyphessobrycon species united chiefly by body shape and the presence of a prominent dark lateral stripe — a grouping sometimes discussed informally as the 'scholzei group' or compared with the closely related H. takasei and other stripe-bearing congeners. Systematic work on the genus remains ongoing, and the boundaries between species and species groups continue to be refined as molecular and morphological data accumulate.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon scholzei is a slender, moderately compressed tetra reaching approximately 1.5–2 in standard length in adults. The body is predominantly silver with a faint yellowish or greenish tinge, and the fins are largely transparent to lightly pigmented. The defining feature is a bold, solid black lateral stripe that originates just behind the operculum and extends horizontally along the midline to the base of the caudal fin, where it enters the lower rays as a dark mark — a classic tetra pattern that aids schooling cohesion in turbid water.

The adipose fin is present, as expected in a characid. The mouth is small and terminal, suited to feeding on small invertebrates. Sexual differences are subtle at a glance: females are noticeably deeper-bodied and rounder in the belly, especially when gravid, while males are slimmer and slightly smaller on average. Neither sex develops extended fins or elaborate colouration beyond the lateral stripe.

Habitat

Hyphessobrycon scholzei is distributed in the Amazon basin of South America, occurring in slow-moving to still, often heavily vegetated waters — quiet tributaries, flooded margins, and blackwater streams typical of the lowland Amazon drainage. These environments are characteristically soft and acidic, with low conductivity and tannin-stained water filtering ambient light to a warm amber.

In such habitats H. scholzei shelters among submerged plants, leaf litter, and root tangles, schooling in loose aggregations in open water and retreating to cover when alarmed. Water temperatures in the lowland Amazon are warm year-round, typically 72–79 °F, and pH in blackwater systems frequently falls below 6. The species is adapted to the dilute, well-oxygenated chemistry of these slowly draining river systems rather than to hard or alkaline conditions.

Feeding

Like most small Hyphessobrycon tetras, H. scholzei is an omnivorous micropredator in the wild, feeding on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms, and similar prey — alongside plant material, algae, and detrital matter encountered in its habitat.

In the aquarium it accepts a wide variety of foods without difficulty. Good-quality flake and micro-pellets form a practical staple; frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm are taken eagerly and contribute to better condition, colouration, and breeding readiness. Because the mouth is small, food particle size matters — crushed flake or fine granules suit the species better than large pellets. Feeding small amounts two or three times daily is preferable to a single large meal.

Mating

Hyphessobrycon scholzei is an egg-scattering, open spawner with no parental care, following the typical pattern seen across the majority of the genus. Courtship is simple and largely unspectacular: a ripe male pursues and nudges a gravid female, driving her toward fine-leaved vegetation or other suitable spawning substrate, where the pair come briefly into close contact and shed eggs and milt simultaneously.

Spawning takes place in short bursts rather than in a single event, and a conditioning pair may spawn repeatedly over a period of days or weeks given stable water conditions and good feeding. The species does not form lasting pair bonds, and multiple males will court a single female when kept in a group. Males do not develop bright breeding colours or elaborate displays; their investment in reproduction ends with fertilisation.

Breeding

Breeding H. scholzei in captivity is uncomplicated and routinely achieved by hobbyists at all experience levels. Conditioned adults can be moved to a small, bare-bottomed breeding tank or one furnished with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or synthetic spawning mops. A slight temperature rise to the upper end of the preferred range — around 79 °F — and soft, slightly acidic water helps trigger spawning. Adults spawn freely and scatter small, adhesive eggs among plant strands or onto the substrate.

The adults must be removed after spawning since they will consume the eggs without hesitation; the species provides no parental care of any kind. Eggs hatch in approximately 24–36 hours at 79 °F, and fry become free-swimming within a further two to three days once the yolk sac is absorbed. First foods should be infusoria or commercial liquid fry food for the first week, transitioning to newly hatched brine shrimp and finely powdered flake as the fry grow. Growth to juvenile size is reasonably quick under good conditions.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon scholzei is one of the more undemanding tetras available to the hobby, tolerating a wider range of water chemistry than many of its relatives and proving adaptable to typical tap-water conditions in much of the world, provided extremes are avoided. A school of six or more individuals is recommended to produce natural behaviour and reduce individual stress; solitary or paired specimens tend to be shy and show little of their social character.

A planted aquarium with subdued lighting, dark substrate, and areas of open midwater swimming space suits the species well and brings out the contrast of the lateral stripe against the silver body. Water temperature in the range 72–79 °F and a pH of 5.5–7.0 covers the preferred parameters drawn from the wild, though the fish tolerates neutral and mildly harder conditions. It is peaceful and compatible with other small, non-aggressive fish — fellow small tetras, corydoras, small rasboras, and dwarf cichlids all make suitable companions. Its hardiness and ease of breeding make it a sound choice for those new to keeping characids.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon scholzei is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List. The DD designation reflects insufficient occurrence and population data to determine a threat category, not necessarily that the species is secure — it means that the information needed for a proper assessment is lacking rather than that no threats exist.

The species is widely distributed in the Amazon basin, which is broadly speaking the most species-rich freshwater region on Earth, but like all Amazonian fishes it faces the large-scale pressures of deforestation, agricultural run-off, and river modification that threaten the integrity of lowland tributary habitats across the basin. The species is well established in the aquarium hobby and is routinely produced in captivity at both commercial and hobbyist scale, meaning aquarium demand does not rely on significant wild collection. Better distributional survey data and population assessments would be needed to move the species out of Data Deficient into a more informative category on the Red List.
