Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon scutulatus was described by Carlos Alberto Santos de Lucena in 2003 in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 1, number 2, pages 93–96). The type locality is the rio Kaiapá, at approximately 10°36'16"S, 55°42'26"W, in the rio Teles Pires drainage, upper rio Tapajós system, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The holotype is a male specimen catalogued as MCP 33333, measuring 1.5 in SL, collected 22 January 2002. The valid name, Hyphessobrycon scutulatus Lucena, 2003, is retained in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes without change.
The species belongs to the large, ecologically and morphologically diverse genus Hyphessobrycon, which spans a broad range of small characids across South and Central America. Many Hyphessobrycon are superficially similar, and the original description identifies this species by a combination of characters rather than a single standout feature: the absence of a humeral spot and lateral stripe alongside the presence of a small caudal-spot and a specific dental and fin-ray formula. The specific epithet scutulatus is Latin for 'diamond-shaped' or 'checkered', likely a reference to a patterning or body-shape element noted by the author.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon scutulatus is a small fish, with the holotype measuring 1.5 in SL and FishBase recording a maximum standard length of 1.5 in. The body plan is that of a typical small Hyphessobrycon: laterally compressed, with a moderately high profile and the standard characid configuration of adipose fin, forked caudal fin, and a short anal fin.
Diagnostic features documented in the original description include 7–8 tricuspid teeth in the inner row of the premaxilla, 5–9 tricuspid teeth in the maxilla, and 18–21 branched anal-fin rays. A small dark spot is present at the base of the caudal fin; a humeral spot and a longitudinal lateral stripe are absent. Males bear hooks on the pelvic fins, a secondary sexual character widespread in characids. The combination of caudal-base spot, absent humeral spot, absent lateral stripe, and that fin-ray and dental formula together define the species within its regional fauna.
Habitat
All confirmed records of Hyphessobrycon scutulatus come from the rio Kaiapá, a stream within the rio Teles Pires drainage of the upper rio Tapajós basin in Mato Grosso, Brazil. The upper Tapajós system drains the Mato Grosso plateau and the southern fringe of the Amazon basin; streams in this area are typically clear to blackwater, often with sandy or leaf-littered substrates, acid to neutral pH, and low conductivity — the environmental template of much of the Brazilian Shield.
FishBase classifies the species as freshwater and benthopelagic, consistent with a small characid that lives in or near the lower water column. Beyond the drainage affiliation and the benthopelagic designation, detailed habitat data from the type locality have not been published; the species is known from a single collection made in January 2002. The restricted known range — a single stream — means its ecological requirements must be inferred from the broader Hyphessobrycon assemblage of similar drainages.
Feeding
No diet study has been published for Hyphessobrycon scutulatus. Small characids of this genus are broadly insectivorous-omnivorous, taking small invertebrates, microcrustaceans, and organic detritus in the wild, with the diet shifting opportunistically with availability.
In any aquarium setting, standard small-characid husbandry applies: good-quality micro-pellets or finely crushed flake supplemented with live and frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, Cyclops, and nauplii. Given the species' size — under 1.5 in SL — food items must be appropriately fine. Data on natural feeding ecology remain sparse.
Mating
No observations of courtship or mating in Hyphessobrycon scutulatus have been published. The presence of pelvic-fin hooks in males is a notable secondary sexual character; in other Hyphessobrycon, fin hooks are associated with spawning behaviour, where the male uses them to position alongside or steady the female during egg release.
Based on the reproductive biology of the genus and the family Characidae broadly, open-water egg-scattering with no parental care is the expected mode. Pairs or groups would scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, over sandy substrate, or in the water column, after which adults take no further interest in the eggs or larvae.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented in the literature for Hyphessobrycon scutulatus, and the original description notes that spawning and reproduction data were not gathered. Standard characid reproductive biology is presumed: eggs scattered among fine-leaved plants or in open water, adhesive and sinking to substrate, with no parental care from either adult.
In an aquarium, a setup suitable for other small Hyphessobrycon — a species tank or fine-leaved plant spawning with the adults removed after spawning — would be the starting point. Fry of species this size hatch small and require infusoria or commercial micro-fry foods before graduating to nauplii. The extremely limited documentation of this species means no captive-breeding account is available to draw on.
In the aquarium
Hyphessobrycon scutulatus is essentially absent from the aquarium trade. It is known from a single collection at a remote type locality in Mato Grosso, has not been exported commercially, and no husbandry literature exists. Any aquarist encountering it would be working without a roadmap.
The general care template for a small, benthopelagic Hyphessobrycon of the Tapajós basin would apply: soft, slightly acid water in the range typical of Brazilian Shield streams, subdued lighting, a planted tank with dense vegetation at the margins, and tankmates of comparable size. A group of six or more would be appropriate for a schooling characid. At under 1.5 in SL the species would be suited to a smaller, species-focused aquarium rather than a community display with larger fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hyphessobrycon scutulatus as Data Deficient (DD) on 7 November 2018. The designation reflects the fundamental problem: the species is known from a single collection at a single site, and no subsequent fieldwork has generated additional records to define its range, population size, or threat status.
The upper rio Tapajós basin faces pressure from agricultural expansion — Mato Grosso is one of Brazil's most intensively farmed states — as well as hydropower development and associated habitat modification. Whether the rio Kaiapá population remains intact, whether the species occurs elsewhere in the drainage, and how sensitive it is to those pressures are all unknown. Until targeted surveys establish its distribution and abundance, a meaningful threat assessment is not possible. The species' narrow known range and the general trajectory of land-use change in the region give some cause for precaution.
