Hyphessobrycon sovichthys was described by Leonard P. Schultz in 1944 in his comprehensive treatment of the family Characinidae from Venezuela, published in the Proceedings of the United States National Museum (vol. 95). That work introduced seventeen new forms and remains a foundational reference for the Venezuelan characid fauna. The species epithet sovichthys is derived from the locality of collection in the Maracaibo basin; the type specimen is held in the Smithsonian collections.
The genus Hyphessobrycon, erected by Durbin in 1908, is one of the most species-rich characid genera, encompassing a broad array of small, laterally compressed tetras distributed across tropical South and Central America. The genus has long been regarded as non-monophyletic, and ongoing molecular revisions continue to reassign species to new or reinstated genera. Morphology
Hyphessobrycon sovichthys is a small tetra, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of 1 in.
