Hyphessobrycon stegemanni is a small, active characid from the Tocantins River drainage of central Brazil, reaching just over 1 in in standard length and tolerating the warm, slightly acidic waters of savanna-margin streams with ease. Known in the aquarium trade under two common names — the Savanna Tetra and the Phoenix Tetra — it is an undemanding species suited to community tanks and assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, reflecting a distribution that spans a major drainage basin without critical habitat threats.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon stegemanni was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1961. The valid name as governed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) is Hyphessobrycon stegemanni Géry, 1961; the authority is not parenthetical because the species was originally described within Hyphessobrycon and remains placed there. The genus Hyphessobrycon is among the largest in the family Characidae, encompassing well over a hundred small tetras distributed across South and Central America, and its limits are still subject to ongoing revision.

The specific epithet stegemanni honours Carlos Stegemann, a German baker and aquarist based in São Paulo, Brazil, who contributed specimens and fieldwork to ichthyological collectors in the mid-twentieth century. The species has also circulated in the hobby under the informal name 'Phoenix Tetra', which appears to have originated from the German aquarist press but has no taxonomic standing.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon stegemanni is a compact, laterally compressed tetra with the classic small-characid body plan: a moderately deep profile, large eyes relative to head length, and a small adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal. FishBase records a maximum size of 1 in standard length; hobby sources suggest some individuals may approach 1.5 in in total length under good conditions. The body is translucent to silvery, with a dark lateral stripe that extends from behind the gill cover to the base of the caudal fin, where it typically terminates in a dark caudal spot.

Colouration in this species is subtle rather than gaudy: the flanks carry a faint metallic sheen and the fins are largely hyaline, sometimes with pale orange or yellow tones. Sexual dimorphism is present but modest — females tend to appear fuller-bodied when gravid, while males remain slimmer. The pattern and modest size place it firmly within the large assemblage of small, schooling Hyphessobrycon that form the backbone of the South American small-tetra fauna.

Habitat

The species is native to the Tocantins River basin in central Brazil, one of the largest river systems in South America and draining a substantial portion of the central Brazilian plateau (Planalto Central) and adjacent cerrado savanna. Within that drainage it inhabits small streams, flooded grassland margins, and shallow, slow-moving or standing waters characteristic of cerrado and gallery-forest habitats.

Water conditions in these environments are warm and soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral: FishBase records a temperature range of 73–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.0, and hardness of 2–8 dH. The cerrado biome experiences strong seasonal rainfall patterns, and the streams H. stegemanni inhabits can fluctuate considerably in depth and chemistry between wet and dry seasons, selecting for physiological tolerance and robust adaptability.

Feeding

Like most members of its genus, Hyphessobrycon stegemanni is a generalist omnivore in the wild, taking small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, microcrustaceans, insect larvae, and plant or algal material as opportunities arise in its shallow, seasonally variable habitat. Its small mouth limits it to fine-grained food items.

In captivity the species accepts virtually all standard aquarium foods without difficulty: quality flake and micropellets form a practical staple, and the diet is enriched with regular offerings of frozen or live Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, Cyclops, and finely chopped bloodworm. Feeding small amounts twice daily is preferable to a single large meal and better matches the continuous foraging behaviour of small schooling tetras.

Mating

Hyphessobrycon stegemanni follows the standard egg-scattering reproductive strategy typical of small Hyphessobrycon: spawning is not tied to a strict season and can be triggered in the aquarium by conditioning on live foods and slight reductions in water temperature or pH. Males display to females with intensified colour and chasing behaviour, and spawning takes place in open water or among fine-leaved vegetation.

As in related species, males often display most vigorously in the presence of rivals, and keeping a group with multiple males typically produces more frequent and enthusiastic courtship activity. There is no pair bond and no parental care; the adults scatter adhesive eggs among plants or substrate and take no further interest in them.

Breeding

Breeding Hyphessobrycon stegemanni in the aquarium follows the pattern established for the genus: condition a small group on live or frozen foods, then place a pair or trio (one female, two males) in a dedicated breeding tank furnished with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or spawning mops over a mesh or grating to protect eggs from adults. Water should be soft and slightly acidic, around 79–82 °F.

Eggs are adhesive and small; at breeding temperatures they typically hatch within 24–36 hours, and the fry become free-swimming a day or two later. First foods for the tiny fry are infusoria or commercial liquid fry food, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp and finely ground flake as the fry grow. Adults will consume both eggs and fry if not separated promptly, so removing the parents after spawning is confirmed is standard practice.

In the aquarium

The Savanna Tetra is an easy, adaptable community fish that suits aquarists at most experience levels. Its small size, peaceful temperament, and tolerance of a reasonably wide range of water conditions make it compatible with a broad array of tankmates — other small tetras, rasboras, small livebearers, peaceful bottom-dwellers such as Corydoras, and dwarf cichlids that do not harass open-water schoolers. It should be kept in groups of at least six, and ten or more show the natural shoaling behaviour most attractively.

A tank in the 23.5–31.5 in range is workable for a school of six to eight; larger groups benefit from more swimming space. The species does well at temperatures of 73–82 °F and accepts pH in the range of 6.5–7.0, though it tolerates a modestly wider band under stable conditions. Planted tanks with open mid-water swimming space suit it well. Because both common names — Savanna Tetra and Phoenix Tetra — circulate in the trade, buyers may occasionally encounter the same fish under either label, and confirming the scientific name on purchase avoids confusion.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon stegemanni is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated in November 2018. The assessment reflects its distribution across the large Tocantins River basin, which despite significant hydroelectric development — most notably the Tucuruí reservoir, one of the world's largest — retains extensive intact tributaries and smaller drainages within the cerrado that support the species' habitat requirements.

The IUCN assessment notes high intrinsic resilience, with a minimum population doubling time of under 15 months, and low fishing vulnerability, consistent with a small, fast-reproducing characid. While large-scale dam construction and agricultural expansion into the cerrado remain ongoing pressures on the Tocantins system as a whole, H. stegemanni is not considered threatened at present. The species is commercially produced for the ornamental trade, and wild-collection pressure on small tetras of this type is generally low relative to the availability of tank-bred stock.
