Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon taphorni was described by Carlos A. García-Alzate, César Román-Valencia, and Hernán Ortega in 2013, in a paper published in the Revista de Biología Tropical (Int. J. Trop. Biol., vol. 61, no. 2, pp. 859–873). The paper simultaneously described the related H. eschwartzae, and both species were collected from the Madre de Dios basin of Peru. The type locality is Peru, within the Madre de Dios River drainage.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) is the authority for the valid name, which stands as Hyphessobrycon taphorni García-Alzate, Román-Valencia & Ortega, 2013. The species is placed in the large, paraphyletic genus Hyphessobrycon — one of the most species-rich genera in the family Characidae, spanning a wide array of small, often brightly coloured tetras across tropical and subtropical South America.
The specific epithet taphorni is a patronym honouring the ichthyologist Donald C. Taphorn, recognised for his extensive contributions to knowledge of neotropical fish diversity.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon taphorni is a small tetra with a maximum recorded standard length of 1 in. Key meristic characters include iii,8 dorsal-fin rays and 23–26 anal-fin soft rays; the lateral-line series carries 28–29 scales, of which only 4–5 are pored. The caudal peduncle depth ranges from 11.4 to 16.4% of standard length, and vertebral count is 33. The maxillary bears 2 teeth.
The species is distinguished from the similar H. loretoensis by having 4 scales between the lateral line and the anal-fin origin rather than 3, and 2 maxillary teeth rather than 3–4. It differs from H. agulha in having 11–12 branched pectoral-fin rays instead of 9–10. No humeral spot is reported. The original description notes the absence of a pored lateral line along most of the flank, with only a short pored section anteriorly — a character found in a number of small Amazonian Hyphessobrycon.
Detailed coloration data beyond the type description are sparse in the literature, as is typical for recently described Amazonian microcharacins that have not entered the aquarium trade.
Habitat
The known range of Hyphessobrycon taphorni is the Madre de Dios River drainage in southeastern Peru — a major tributary of the Madeira River and one of the principal drainages of the southwestern Amazon basin. The Madre de Dios system spans an altitudinal gradient from Andean cloud-forest streams above 1,0 ft down through foothills and into the lowland rainforest plain.
The Alto Madre de Dios sub-basin occupies an Andean-Amazon transitional zone, where fish communities respond strongly to altitude, substrate, and seasonal water-chemistry shifts. Higher-elevation tributaries run cold, fast, and well-oxygenated over rocky substrate, while lower-altitude channels are warmer, slower-moving, and associated with leaf litter, marginal vegetation, and seasonally inundated forest. Given the typical ecology of similar small Hyphessobrycon, the species likely inhabits shaded, slow to moderate-flow reaches with organic substrate rather than the swift headwater torrents.
Seasonal flooding and the El Niño cycle influence water levels and chemistry across the Madre de Dios system. Specific collection-site data for H. taphorni beyond the basin-level designation are not publicly available.
Feeding
No published diet study exists for Hyphessobrycon taphorni specifically. As a small Amazonian characin in the Hyphessobrycon assemblage, it is expected to be a micropredator and opportunistic omnivore, taking small invertebrates — zooplankton, microcrustaceans, insect larvae, and surface-fallen insects — together with algal filaments and organic detritus.
In the aquarium, related small Hyphessobrycon species accept good-quality micro-pellets, finely crushed flake, and frozen or live small invertebrates such as Cyclops, Daphnia, and baby brine shrimp. A varied diet is advisable to meet micronutrient needs and maintain condition. Given its small adult size, food particle dimensions should be scaled accordingly.
Mating
No specific observations of courtship or mating behaviour in Hyphessobrycon taphorni appear in the published literature. The genus Hyphessobrycon follows a typical characin reproductive pattern: egg-scattering open spawning with no parental care. Males typically pursue females actively, with spawning activity often peaking in morning hours. Pairs or groups move among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or submerged root tangles, depositing small adhesive eggs that settle or attach to plant surfaces.
Sexual dimorphism in small Hyphessobrycon typically manifests as a fuller abdomen in ripe females, while males may show slightly more intense pigmentation during courtship. Without published observations specific to this species, these inferences are based on the reproductive biology of closely related congeners.
Breeding
Hyphessobrycon taphorni has not been documented in the aquarium hobby and no captive-breeding accounts are available. Based on the standard Hyphessobrycon breeding model, spawning would be expected to occur over fine-leaved vegetation or synthetic spawning mops, with the pair scattering small, adhesive eggs that the adults promptly ignore or consume.
Breeders working with similar small Amazonian tetras typically condition adults on live and frozen foods, conduct partial water changes with slightly cooler, softer water to simulate the onset of a rainy season, and move eggs or spawning medium to a separate rearing container immediately after spawning. Eggs generally hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, and the fry require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. No clutch-size or incubation data specific to H. taphorni are recorded.
In the aquarium
Hyphessobrycon taphorni is not established in the aquarium hobby as of 2026, and no care accounts are available from specialist sources. It has not been noted on Seriously Fish or other major tetra resources. Given its small adult size of approximately 1 in SL and its origin in the Madre de Dios drainage, a planted aquarium with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water in the range of 75–82 °F would approximate conditions typical of lowland Amazonian tributaries in its home region.
Should the species enter the trade, it would likely be suited to a densely planted nano or community aquarium alongside similarly sized, peaceful species. Its small size means tankmates should be chosen with care to avoid competition or predation pressure. As with most small Hyphessobrycon, a group of at least six individuals would be advisable to allow natural schooling behaviour.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon taphorni has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List as of 2026. Many recently described Amazonian microcharacins share this situation: formal assessment lags years or decades behind description, particularly for species known from limited collection events.
The Madre de Dios basin, while still largely intact relative to more developed Amazonian drainages, faces ongoing pressures from illegal gold mining (particularly alluvial dredging), agricultural expansion, and road development in the Cusco and Madre de Dios regions of Peru. These activities elevate sediment loads, alter hydrology, and fragment habitat — all factors that can affect small, potentially range-restricted stream fish. The precise extent of H. taphorni's range within the basin is unknown, making it difficult to evaluate its vulnerability. Until a formal assessment is completed, the species should be regarded as data-deficient with respect to conservation status.
