Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon tortuguerae was described by James E. Böhlke in 1958, with the type locality placed in the Tortuguero region of Costa Rica's Caribbean-draining lowlands. The Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Hyphessobrycon tortuguerae Böhlke, 1958, and the species has remained in that genus without subsequent transfer or synonymisation.
Hyphessobrycon is one of the largest genera in the family Characidae and has long served as a taxonomic holding ground for small New World tetras that resist easy placement elsewhere. The genus has been subject to ongoing revision, and its limits remain partially unsettled; H. tortuguerae sits within the Central American clade of the genus, a group of small, insectivorous creek tetras that colonised the Caribbean-draining river systems of the isthmus.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon tortuguerae is a small, slender characid reaching a maximum of approximately 1.5 in standard length. Like most members of the genus it has the typical tetra body plan: a moderately compressed, fusiform profile, a single dorsal fin, an adipose fin, and the forked caudal fin characteristic of the family.
Detailed colour information is sparse in the available literature. Central American Hyphessobrycon of this group are generally silvery to tan with lateral stripe patterning, though the exact markings of H. tortuguerae have not been thoroughly characterised in widely accessible sources. Sexually mature females are typically deeper-bodied than males, a common pattern of dimorphism across the genus.
Habitat
The species occupies benthopelagic zones of backwaters and small creeks with low to moderate current, at elevations from sea level to approximately 164 ft. Its range spans the Caribbean-draining lowlands of Honduras (Patuca, Warunta, and Coco drainages), Nicaragua, and Costa Rica (Tortuguero, San Juan, Río Frío, and Río San Carlos drainages). These are tropical, forested lowland systems with warm water, abundant marginal and submerged vegetation, and leaf litter.
Reported water temperatures across this range are 75–86 °F, consistent with the seasonally warm lowland streams of the Caribbean versant of Central America. The species occurs across a broad extent of occurrence (approximately 135,435 mi²) and is considered common within suitable habitat. Its association with backwaters and slow side channels rather than main river channels suggests a preference for calmer, structurally complex microhabitats.
Feeding
Hyphessobrycon tortuguerae is classified as an insectivore. In common with other small Hyphessobrycon of Central American backwaters, it likely feeds on surface-fallen and aquatic insects, small invertebrates, and zooplankton in the wild, exploiting the invertebrate productivity of shaded, vegetated creek margins.
In captivity it would be expected to accept the standard range of small tetra foods: quality small-particle flake or micro pellets, and frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and micro worms. Live and frozen food supplements benefit condition and breeding readiness.
Mating
Like other members of Hyphessobrycon, H. tortuguerae is presumed to practise open egg-scattering spawning with no parental care, the reproductive mode characteristic of the genus and the broader family. Males likely court females with fin displays and chase behaviour, with spawning taking place among fine-leaved plants or over substrate.
No detailed published account of courtship behaviour in this species is available in the accessible literature. The generalities of Hyphessobrycon mating — brief pair formation, scatter spawning, and immediate post-spawning indifference to the eggs — apply by reasonable inference from the genus-wide pattern.
Breeding
Specific breeding reports for Hyphessobrycon tortuguerae in captivity are not documented in the sources available. Based on the biology of closely related Central American Hyphessobrycon, breeding would involve the scatter of small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with eggs hatching in approximately 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures and no parental involvement.
Adults would need to be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation. Fry would require very small first foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Conditioning adults on varied live and frozen foods prior to any breeding attempt is standard practice for the genus.
In the aquarium
Hyphessobrycon tortuguerae is rarely encountered in the hobby and is not currently an established aquarium fish. As a small, insectivorous tetra from warm, vegetated Central American lowland creeks, it would in principle suit a well-planted community aquarium with soft to moderately hard water, temperatures in the 75–82 °F range, and gentle filtration that avoids strong current.
Small tetras of this type do best in groups of six or more, which reduces stress and encourages natural behaviour. Tankmates should be similarly sized and peaceful. The species' natural backwater habitat — shaded, rich in cover — suggests that a darker substrate, floating plants, and leaf litter would provide a comfortable environment. Because it is not commercially available, it is unlikely to be kept except by specialists or those working with Central American stream fauna.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon tortuguerae is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2020 following evaluation on 29 March 2019. The population is considered stable. The species has a large extent of occurrence (approximately 135,435 mi²) across multiple river systems in Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, and is considered common within suitable habitat.
Identified threats include deforestation, illegal mining, water diversion, and agricultural encroachment on its lowland creek and backwater habitats across the Central American isthmus. Some portions of its range fall within protected areas, which provides a degree of habitat security. Although these pressures are real, the species' broad distribution across several independent drainage systems means that no single threat is likely to cause a range-wide decline in the near term.
