Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon tukunai was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1965, in a paper covering South American characoids from the Senckenberg Museum collections: "Poissons characoïdes sud-américains du Senckenberg Museum, II. Characidae et Crenuchidae de l'Igarapé Préto," published in Senckenbergiana Biologica (vol. 46, no. 1, pp. 11–45). The holotype, SMF 7209, measured 0.5 in SL and was collected from Igarapé Préto, a dark-water tributary located east of the border town of Tabatinga in the upper Amazon basin of Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Hyphessobrycon tukunai Géry, 1965; the species has remained in Hyphessobrycon since its original description.
Hyphessobrycon is one of the largest and most taxonomically complex genera of Neotropical characids, encompassing a broad diversity of small tetras distributed across South and Central America. The genus is not currently considered monophyletic in its traditional circumscription, and ongoing phylogenetic work continues to reorganise its boundaries. H. tukunai has seen limited study since its original description and has been incorporated into comparative osteological analyses of the genus without prompting a transfer. The species is validated by ITIS (TSN 641168) and recognised in standard reference databases.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon tukunai is a very small characid, with a maximum recorded standard length of 1 in (male or unsexed; aquarium specimens may reach approximately 1 in total length). It has the compact, laterally compressed body typical of small Hyphessobrycon, with the translucent to lightly pigmented flanks common in many diminutive Amazonian tetras. Detailed meristic and morphological data beyond the original type material are sparse in the published literature.
Like the majority of its genus, H. tukunai has the characteristically large eye relative to head size seen in many small characids, and the body form is consistent with a midwater, schooling lifestyle in slow or still waters. No reliable illustrations of living colour in wild specimens have been widely published, and captive records are essentially absent, leaving the species' full colour pattern incompletely documented outside the type description.
Habitat
The type locality of Hyphessobrycon tukunai is Igarapé Préto — a blackwater stream whose name translates directly as "dark-water tributary" — east of Tabatinga, in the upper Solimões River basin of western Amazonas state, Brazil, at roughly 1°S–5°S. The upper Solimões drainage is one of the most hydrologically complex regions of the Amazon basin, where extensive floodplains, igapó (blackwater flooded forests), and a web of small tributaries create diverse microhabitats.
The IUCN assessment notes that the species is known only from this type locality but considers a broader distribution likely, given the limited sampling effort in the region. The habitat falls within inland freshwater wetlands — permanent rivers and streams — and the surrounding landscape at the time of the 2021 assessment was characterised as relatively little disturbed, with no specific threats identified. FishBase records the species as benthopelagic, tropical freshwater, with a temperature range of 70–75 °F.
Feeding
No specific dietary studies have been published for Hyphessobrycon tukunai. As a small Amazonian characid from blackwater stream habitats, it is presumed to be a micropredator or opportunistic omnivore in the manner typical of the genus, likely feeding on small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and zooplankton — together with organic detritus and incidental algae.
In any aquarium setting, small Hyphessobrycon generally accept commercial micro-pellets and finely crushed flake as a staple, with frequent offerings of live or frozen small invertebrates such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and micro-worms promoting conditioning and enriching diet quality. Given the species' very small size, appropriately scaled food particles are important.
Mating
Hyphessobrycon tukunai has not been bred in captivity in any documented account available in the published literature. Like other members of the genus, it is expected to practise egg-scattering open spawning with no parental care, consistent with the reproductive mode ancestral to Hyphessobrycon and the broader subfamily.
In the wild, spawning likely coincides with seasonal water fluctuations in the western Amazon basin, where rising floodwaters trigger breeding in many characids. Adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs would be scattered among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or submerged leaf litter, and both adults would abandon the spawn immediately. Precise triggers, courtship behaviours, and any sexual signalling characters remain undescribed.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Hyphessobrycon tukunai are known. Based on the biology of congeners, the general pattern would involve conditioning adults on live and frozen foods, providing fine-leaved plants or spawning mops as an egg-deposition substrate, and removing adults after spawning to prevent predation on the small, adhesive eggs.
Incubation at typical tropical temperatures (70–75 °F) for small Hyphessobrycon is generally in the range of 24–48 hours, with fry becoming free-swimming within a few days. First foods for the very small fry of a 1 in species would need to be accordingly tiny — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry foods — before moving on to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Given that the species is essentially absent from the trade, captive breeding attempts have not been reported.
In the aquarium
Hyphessobrycon tukunai is not an established aquarium fish and is not available through normal trade channels. Its extreme rarity in captivity means that husbandry recommendations must be extrapolated from related species rather than drawn from accumulated keeper experience. As a blackwater Amazonian tetra from the upper Solimões, it would logically be suited to soft, acidic, warm water — though FishBase records a slightly cooler range of 70–75 °F relative to many co-occurring tetras — in a heavily planted or botanicals-rich aquarium that replicates dark, tannin-stained stream conditions.
Should specimens ever become available, a species or community tank with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates, subdued lighting, a dark substrate, and good water movement would be appropriate. The species' very small adult size (around 1 in SL) means tankmates must be chosen carefully to avoid predation. Blackwater parameters — pH 5.5–7.0, very soft water, temperature 70–75 °F — would best reflect its native habitat.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon tukunai is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, published in 2023 based on an assessment completed on 4 March 2021. The assessment notes that the species is known only from its type locality — Igarapé Préto, east of Tabatinga in the upper Amazon — but flags that the region is poorly sampled and a wider distribution is probable. The population trend is recorded as stable, and no current threats were identified at the time of assessment; the surrounding region was considered relatively undisturbed.
The Least Concern listing does not eliminate conservation interest. The upper Solimões basin faces long-term pressures from deforestation, agricultural expansion, and infrastructure development in the western Amazon, and blackwater tributaries are among the more sensitive freshwater habitats given their naturally low buffering capacity. Continued baseline surveys to establish the true distributional extent of H. tukunai would be valuable, and the IUCN assessment itself recommends further research as a priority.
