Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon vilmae was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1966. The type locality lies in the upper Arinos-Juruena basin, part of the broader upper Tapajós drainage in the Brazilian states of Amazonas and Mato Grosso. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Hyphessobrycon vilmae Géry, 1966, unparenthesised because the species has remained within Hyphessobrycon since its original description.
Hyphessobrycon is one of the largest and most species-rich genera in the family Characidae, encompassing a vast assemblage of small, often brilliantly coloured tetras distributed across tropical South America. The genus has historically served as something of a catch-all for small characids that do not fit more tightly diagnosed groupings, and its limits remain a subject of ongoing systematic revision. H. vilmae sits within this broad assemblage without having been reassigned to any segregate genus.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon vilmae is a small, slender-bodied tetra reaching approximately 1 in standard length, with aquarium specimens occasionally approaching 1.5 in total length. The body is moderately compressed laterally, typical of the genus, with the proportions and finnage of a classic small characid: an adipose fin is present, the caudal fin is forked, and the dorsal fin is set roughly at mid-body.
The coloration that gives rise to the common name 'chocolate neon tetra' is the species' defining trait: a warm, brownish-iridescent lateral band or body sheen overlaid by a subtle metallic glint, evoking the coppery or chocolatey tones rather than the pure electric blue of the better-known neon tetra. Males are reported to be more intensely coloured, while females grow somewhat rounder and larger in the belly when gravid — the typical sexual dimorphism seen across Hyphessobrycon.
Habitat
Hyphessobrycon vilmae is endemic to the upper Tapajós River basin in Brazil, with the type locality in the upper Arinos-Juruena system — a network of clearwater and blackwater tributaries draining the southern Brazilian Shield before flowing north toward the Amazon. The species' entire known range falls within Amazonas and Mato Grosso states.
As a benthopelagic tetra of Amazonian headwater drainages, it inhabits the lower to mid-water column of slow to moderately flowing, typically soft and acidic forest streams. Water conditions in the upper Tapajós catchment are characteristically warm and low in dissolved minerals, with pH values that can dip well below neutral in blackwater reaches. FishBase records the species as tropical, with a preferred temperature window of 72–79 °F and a pH floor around 5.8.
Feeding
Hyphessobrycon vilmae is an opportunistic omnivore in the wild, taking small aquatic invertebrates and fallen fruit in the manner typical of small characids in Amazonian floodplain and gallery-forest streams. Seriously Fish notes the natural diet as aquatic invertebrates and fallen fruit, a foraging strategy well suited to the leaf-litter and riparian habitat of the upper Tapajós tributaries.
In captivity the species is undemanding and accepts good-quality small flake and micro-pellets readily. Live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and micro-worms are taken eagerly and support breeding condition. A varied diet that includes some live or frozen invertebrate prey brings out the species' best coloration and keeps fish in robust health.
Mating
Like the majority of Hyphessobrycon species, H. vilmae is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care. Males are typically more intensely coloured than females and pursue spawning females with active courtship, displaying alongside rivals to assert dominance and attract mates.
Spawning takes place among fine-leaved vegetation or near the substrate, where adhesive eggs are scattered and left to develop without guarding or tending. Females distinguishable by their fuller abdominal profile when gravid are the usual indicator of breeding readiness in a conditioned group. As with most small tetras, the likelihood of successful spawning in the aquarium rises when a school of multiple individuals is kept together and offered a varied, high-quality diet.
Breeding
Hyphessobrycon vilmae breeds in the egg-scattering mode typical of the genus. Conditioned adults can be induced to spawn in a dedicated breeding tank furnished with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or synthetic spawning mops, in soft, slightly acidic water at the lower end of the species' temperature range to mimic the cooler blackwater tributaries of the dry season.
Eggs are adhesive and are deposited among the spawning medium; adults offer no parental care and will consume eggs and fry if not separated. The eggs hatch within a few days at typical temperatures, and the fry, once free-swimming, require very fine first foods — infusoria, rotifers, or commercial liquid fry food — before they are large enough to take freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Growth is relatively slow, as is standard in small Hyphessobrycon.
In the aquarium
Hyphessobrycon vilmae is a peaceful, shoaling tetra suited to community aquaria with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. A group of six or more individuals allows the species to express natural schooling behaviour and brings out the males' coloration through low-level social competition. The tank should offer soft, acidic water — Seriously Fish recommends pH 5.0–7.0 and hardness up to around 215 ppm — and a temperature of 68–79 °F.
A planted aquarium with dark substrate and some surface cover to diffuse lighting provides conditions close to the species' native blackwater habitat and showcases the warm iridescent coloration that distinguishes it. Standard community tankmates — other small tetras, peaceful rasboras, dwarf cichlids, and Corydoras — are all compatible. The species is hardy once established and tolerates a fair degree of variation in water parameters, though consistent soft and acidic conditions are preferred for long-term health and colour.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon vilmae is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted in November 2018. The species' distribution in the upper Tapajós basin encompasses a substantial area of relatively intact Amazonian watershed, and no severe range-wide threats had been identified at the time of assessment.
The upper Tapajós catchment is nonetheless subject to the ongoing pressures that affect much of Amazonian Brazil: agricultural expansion, road development, and associated deforestation and water-quality changes. As a small, endemic tetra with a range centred on a single major tributary system, population trends bear watching as land use in Mato Grosso continues to intensify. Aquarium trade demand for the species appears modest relative to higher-profile congeners, and most specimens in the hobby are likely tank-bred.
