Hyphessobrycon vinaceus is a small, vividly red-bodied characid from the rio Pardo drainage of eastern Brazil, described in 2007 and known only from a single fast-running, clear-water stream. Its epithet, drawn from the Latin word for the colour of red wine, captures the distinctive reddish flush that suffuses live specimens and sets it apart from the many similarly sized congeners that share the genus. Because its entire known range is confined to a stretch of the rio São João and the species was assessed as Least Concern in 2018, it occupies an unusual conservation position: narrowly endemic yet not currently threatened.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon vinaceus was described by Vinicius Bertaco, Luiz Roberto Malabarba, and Jorge Abdala Dergam in 2007 in a paper published in Neotropical Ichthyology, volume 5 (issue 3, pages 245–249), addressing new Hyphessobrycon from the upper rio Pardo drainage of eastern Brazil. The valid name, as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Hyphessobrycon vinaceus Bertaco, Malabarba & Dergam, 2007. The species was placed in Hyphessobrycon, the largest and most heterogeneous genus in Characidae, and no subsequent revision has moved it.

Hyphessobrycon vinaceus is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of characters: the vivid red to reddish pigmentation of live specimens, specific soft dorsal-ray counts (11), vertebral counts (32–33), a forked caudal fin, and cycloid scales. These meristic characters, together with the coloration, serve as the diagnostic suite for separating it from morphologically similar species in the rio Pardo and neighbouring drainages.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon vinaceus reaches approximately 2.5 in standard length in males and unsexed specimens, which is near the upper end of size for many members of the genus. It is a slender, laterally compressed characid with the typical Hyphessobrycon body plan: a single dorsal fin, a forked caudal fin, an adipose fin, and cycloid scales covering the body.

The most striking feature of live fish is the pervasive reddish pigmentation — the vinaceus coloration from which the species takes its name. This red flush covers much of the body and is the primary feature used in field identification. Preserved specimens lose the colour rapidly, which is why the original description emphasises living material. Dorsal soft rays number 11 and the vertebral count is 32–33, figures that fall within the normal range for the genus but help distinguish this species from specific sympatric congeners.

Habitat

The species is known only from the rio São João, a tributary of the rio Pardo drainage in eastern Brazil. The type-locality description captures a highly specific microhabitat: fast-running, clear water in a shallow river approximately 13–16 ft wide, with a sandy bottom and riparian vegetation, with specimens collected in rapids below a small waterfall. This is a rheophilic, clear-water stream environment — well-oxygenated, with strong current, low turbidity, and intact gallery forest providing shade and leaf litter.

The rio Pardo drains a region of eastern Minas Gerais and Bahia states. Atlantic Forest streams in this region tend to be oligotrophic and relatively cool compared with lowland Amazonian waters, though precise water-chemistry data for the type locality are not documented in the available literature. The extremely restricted known distribution — a single river system within a single drainage — makes the species' ecological requirements and full range difficult to assess from existing records.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study of Hyphessobrycon vinaceus in the wild has been published. Like other small Hyphessobrycon from clear Atlantic Forest streams, it almost certainly feeds as an opportunistic micro-predator and omnivore, taking small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface, and possibly fine plant matter or algae.

In the aquarium, fish of this genus and size are typically easy to feed: they accept good-quality micro-pellets, small flake, and frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and bloodworm. A varied diet is important both for maintaining the vivid red coloration and for ensuring balanced nutrition in a fish whose wild diet is likely considerably more varied than any single prepared food can replicate.

Mating

Specific observations of courtship behaviour in Hyphessobrycon vinaceus are not documented in the available literature. As with the broader genus Hyphessobrycon, the species is presumed to be an egg-scattering open spawner in which males pursue and display to females during spawning events. Sexual dimorphism, if present, likely follows the pattern common in the group: females somewhat more robust-bodied when gravid, males showing more intense coloration.

Courtship in egg-scattering characids typically involves the male swimming alongside or beneath the female, nudging her toward spawning sites among fine-leaved vegetation or over substrate, where eggs and milt are released simultaneously into the water column. There is no known parental bond, territory defence, or mate guarding in any closely related Hyphessobrycon.

Breeding

No captive breeding account for Hyphessobrycon vinaceus appears in the hobbyist or scientific literature reviewed for this article. By analogy with closely related and similarly sized Hyphessobrycon species, breeding would be expected to follow the standard egg-scattering pattern: fish spawn over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, depositing small adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs that are abandoned immediately; adults will consume eggs if not separated.

A separate, well-planted or moss-filled rearing vessel with slightly cooler, clean water, gentle aeration, and small live or frozen conditioning foods would be the starting point for anyone attempting to breed this species. Given the fast-current type locality, slightly elevated water flow and high oxygenation may encourage spawning. Data on clutch size, incubation period, and fry care remain undocumented for this species specifically.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon vinaceus is rarely encountered in the ornamental trade and is largely absent from mainstream hobby literature, which reflects how recently it was described and the inaccessibility of its type locality. Aquarists who do keep it should treat it as they would other small, clear-water Atlantic Forest Hyphessobrycon: a group of six or more fish in a well-filtered, well-oxygenated aquarium of at least 23.5–31.5 in in length, with subdued lighting, fine-leaved plants, and a dark substrate to bring out the red coloration.

Water conditions should approximate clear, clean, moderately cool conditions: slightly acidic to neutral pH (around 6.0–7.5), soft to moderately hard water, and temperatures in the range of roughly 72–79 °F are a reasonable starting point given the Atlantic Forest stream origin, though exact parameters for the rio São João type locality are not on record. As with all small characids kept in groups, peaceful tankmates of similar size and temperament are preferable; the species should not be kept with large or aggressive fish.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hyphessobrycon vinaceus as Least Concern (LC) in its 2018 assessment. Despite this status, the species' known range is extremely restricted: it has been recorded only from the rio São João within the rio Pardo drainage of eastern Brazil, a region where Atlantic Forest stream habitats face ongoing pressure from deforestation, agricultural runoff, and water extraction. A Least Concern listing does not mean a species is immune to local threats — it reflects that, at the time of assessment, available data did not support a more threatened category.

The Atlantic Forest biome has lost more than 85% of its original extent and continues to decline; freshwater endemics in small tributaries are among the most vulnerable components of that biodiversity. Continued monitoring of the rio São João and its riparian condition, and further surveys to establish whether the species has additional populations elsewhere in the drainage, would meaningfully improve the confidence of future assessments.
