With a body that grades from deep indigo through violet to plum, Hyphessobrycon wadai is one of the more visually striking small characins to emerge from the upper Rio Tapajós drainage — a fish hobbyists quickly dubbed the Blueberry Tetra for obvious reasons. Described in 2016 by Marinho, Dagosta, Camelier, and Oyakawa from a tributary of the Rio do Sangue in Mato Grosso, Brazil, it remains sparsely seen in the trade but is valued by aquarists who seek unusual colour in a compact, peaceful package. The IUCN has not evaluated it.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon wadai was formally described by Marinho, Dagosta, Camelier and Oyakawa in 2016, with the type locality recorded as a tributary of the Rio do Sangue, itself an affluent of the Rio Juruena in the upper Rio Tapajós basin, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The original description was published in the Journal of Fish Biology (doi: 10.1111/jfb.12991). The species sits within the large, morphologically diverse genus Hyphessobrycon — one of the biggest genera in the family Characidae — and is currently retained there without known synonyms.

Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer and Fong) is the authority for valid names in Characidae. The species has no parenthetical authority because it was described directly in Hyphessobrycon and has not been moved. Key meristic characters noted in the original description include 16–18 branched anal-fin rays, 9 branched dorsal-fin rays, and 6 branched pelvic-fin rays — a combination that helps separate it from congeners in the Tapajós basin. The single humeral blotch and the absence of a caudal-peduncle blotch or well-defined mid-lateral stripe further define the species.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon wadai is a small characin, reaching a reported maximum of around 1.5 in standard length. The body is moderately compressed, with the compact oval profile typical of the smaller Hyphessobrycon species. Distinguishing external features include a single dark humeral blotch situated behind the operculum, no dark blotch on the caudal peduncle, and the absence of a well-defined mid-lateral stripe running the length of the flank — three characters that collectively set it apart from superficially similar Tapajós Hyphessobrycon.

The coloration is the fish's most arresting quality. Mature specimens, especially males in good condition, display a rich purplish-blue to deep violet body that earned the vernacular name Blueberry Tetra. Exact intensity varies with the fish's mood, health, and the quality of aquarium lighting, but the underlying chromatic character is consistent and unusual among comparably sized characins. Fins may show complementary hues or be lightly pigmented.

Habitat

The type locality and all reliably attributed wild records place Hyphessobrycon wadai in the upper Rio Tapajós basin of Mato Grosso, Brazil — specifically in smaller tributary streams of the Rio do Sangue, which drains into the Rio Juruena and thence into the Tapajós. FishBase characterises the species as benthopelagic in clear-water streams with moderate to rapid current over sandy bottoms, a habitat type common to the Cerrado-to-rainforest transition zone of central-western Brazil.

Note should be taken that some hobbyist sources have cited the Orinoco basin of Venezuela as the origin of the Blueberry Tetra; this appears to be an error. The original description and FishBase both unambiguously place the species in the upper Tapajós drainage of Brazil, and no published record substantiates a Venezuelan population. Aquarists sourcing wild-caught stock should verify provenance with collectors.

Feeding

FishBase records the diet of Hyphessobrycon wadai as broadly omnivorous, encompassing filamentous algae, organic debris, insect larvae, and fragments of terrestrial insects — a diverse array consistent with small characins that forage opportunistically in flowing stream environments. Such fish typically pick at invertebrates drifting in the current, graze algal films from hard surfaces, and take terrestrial matter that falls into the water.

In the aquarium H. wadai should be offered a varied menu: high-quality micro-pellets or fine-grade flake as a staple, supplemented regularly with small frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, micro-worms, and Cyclops. Vegetable-derived foods or spirulina-enriched flake will address the algal component of the natural diet. Frequent small feedings suit the fish's continuously active foraging style better than a single large daily meal.

Mating

Hyphessobrycon wadai is presumed to be a typical egg-scattering characin. No detailed published account of its courtship behaviour in the wild is available, but its reproductive mode almost certainly follows the standard Hyphessobrycon pattern: males display their most vivid coloration to court females, driving and circling prospective mates, with spawning taking place among fine-leaved vegetation or other dense substrate where the adhesive eggs can be deposited and left.

As with most small characins, there is no pair bond and no parental care. Males in a well-maintained community group should show their best coloration when mixed with others of the species, as social competition tends to intensify colour expression. Providing sheltered plant cover replicates the structure within which natural courtship and spawning are likely to occur.

Breeding

Detailed breeding accounts for Hyphessobrycon wadai are sparse in the published literature, but the species has been spawned in captivity. Aquarium sources recommend soft, acidic water — pH around 6.0–6.5 — and a temperature in the range of 79–82 °F (79–82 °F) for conditioning and spawning, mirroring the warm, soft-water conditions typical of smaller Tapajós tributaries. A dedicated breeding tank with a layer of Java moss, fine-leaved plants, or spawning mops over a bare bottom simplifies egg recovery.

Like other egg-scattering Hyphessobrycon, adults will consume their own eggs if not removed promptly. Breeders should condition a group on varied live and frozen foods before introducing them to the spawning tank, then remove adults once spawning is observed. Eggs are adhesive and small; fry are correspondingly tiny on hatching and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as first foods before advancing to newly hatched brine shrimp. Captive breeding reduces pressure on what is presumably a restricted wild range.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon wadai is well suited to a small planted aquarium. A tank of 23.5–31.5 in or larger housing a group of six or more allows the natural shoaling behaviour to develop and the fish's coloration to be appreciated fully; single specimens or very small groups often colour poorly and behave nervously. Water for long-term maintenance should be kept clean and moderately soft; for spawning, softer and more acidic conditions are recommended.

As a small, peaceful species it is a good community fish for similarly sized non-aggressive tankmates: small rasboras, pencilfish, other dwarf Hyphessobrycon, Corydoras, and small loricariid catfish all make compatible neighbours. Avoid large or nippy species that outcompete it at the feeding station or damage its fins. Plenty of plant cover — floating plants to diffuse surface light, stem plants and mosses in the mid-ground — replicates the dappled stream environments the species inhabits and tends to encourage bolder behaviour and stronger colour.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon wadai has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. Its known distribution is confined to the upper Rio Tapajós basin in Mato Grosso, Brazil — specifically small tributaries of the Rio do Sangue — which implies a geographically restricted range that could make localised populations vulnerable to habitat alteration.

The upper Tapajós drainage intersects with the agricultural frontier of Mato Grosso, one of Brazil's most intensively farmed states, and with areas affected by hydropower development. How much of the species' range remains in intact clear-water stream habitat is not formally documented. Pending an IUCN assessment, the precautionary inference is that like many narrowly distributed Neotropical stream fish, H. wadai deserves monitoring. Sourcing tank-bred specimens where available is sensible practice.
