Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon weitzmanorum was described by Flávio C. T. Lima and Cristiano R. Moreira in 2003 as one of three new Hyphessobrycon species from the upper Rio Araguaia basin in Brazil. The type locality is within that basin, a large tributary system draining central Brazil's Cerrado plateau before joining the Tocantins River. The valid name, as recorded by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Hyphessobrycon weitzmanorum Lima & Moreira, 2003; because the species was described in Hyphessobrycon and has not been transferred to another genus, the authority is not parenthetical.
The species epithet weitzmanorum is a patronym in the genitive plural, honouring the American ichthyologists Stanley H. Weitzman and Marilyn Weitzman, who made major contributions to the systematics of New World characids. Hyphessobrycon is a large, species-rich genus in the family Characidae, broadly distributed across South and Central America and encompassing a wide range of body forms and colour patterns. The genus has long been regarded as almost certainly polyphyletic, and its limits continue to shift as molecular and morphological studies revise the broader characid topology; weitzmanorum's placement reflects the original description and current working taxonomy.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon weitzmanorum is a small tetra, reaching approximately 1 in standard length. The body plan is the typical compact, laterally compressed form of the genus — a relatively deep-bodied fish with a single dorsal fin, an adipose fin, and the forked caudal typical of characids.
The colour pattern is the species' most diagnostic feature and the origin of its hobby name. The body carries a high concentration of dark chromatophores that impart a deep, steel-blue to blackish overall tone. Two distinct humeral spots are present: these are dark blotches on the shoulder region immediately behind the operculum, a character used in the original description to separate this species from related taxa within the Araguaia fauna. The combination of the dual humeral spots and the unusually dense dark pigmentation distinguishes weitzmanorum from the other two species described alongside it in 2003. Habitat
In the wild, Hyphessobrycon weitzmanorum is known from the upper Rio Araguaia basin in the state of Mato Grosso (and likely Goiás), Brazil. The Araguaia is a large Cerrado river whose upper reaches flow through a mosaic of seasonally flooded savannas, gallery forests, and sandy-bottomed clearwater streams. The species is described as a freshwater, pelagic fish inhabiting tropical conditions.
Based on its distribution and on the broader ecology of Hyphessobrycon congeners in Cerrado stream systems, weitzmanorum is expected to inhabit clearwater or blackwater streams and lagoons with gentle to moderate current, submerged aquatic vegetation and woody debris, and sandy or leaf-litter substrates. Aquarium husbandry sources describe the preferred environment as clearwater streams with gentle current, rich aquatic vegetation, and submerged wood — consistent with the gallery-forest stream habitats typical of the region. Water in such Cerrado streams tends to be soft and acidic to neutral, warm, and low in dissolved minerals.
Feeding
Hyphessobrycon weitzmanorum is an omnivore in the broad sense shared by most small characids. In nature it almost certainly takes small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and organic detritus, supplemented by algae and fine plant matter — the opportunistic diet typical of Hyphessobrycon in Cerrado stream habitats.
In the aquarium the species accepts a wide variety of prepared and live foods. Good-quality dried foods — fine flake and micro-pellets suited to its small mouth — form a practical staple, but regular offerings of small live or frozen invertebrates such as brine shrimp nauplii, Cyclops, Daphnia, and bloodworm improve condition and help bring fish into breeding readiness. A varied diet is recommended for all small tetras kept in captivity, and weitzmanorum is no exception.
Mating
Hyphessobrycon weitzmanorum reproduces by open, non-guarding egg-scattering — the ancestral mode widespread in Hyphessobrycon and across the broader characid family. Males pursue ripe females through fine-leaved vegetation or spawning mops, releasing milt alongside each small clutch of adhesive eggs. There is no pair bond, no territory defence, and no parental involvement beyond the spawning act itself.
For breeding, conditioning sources recommend dim lighting and soft, acidic water (pH 5.5–6.5, hardness 1–5 GH) to trigger spawning behaviour. A mature group of adults held in good condition — varied live and frozen diet, stable, clean water — will come into breeding readiness, and spawning activity is most likely at first light, following the circadian pattern common to many small characids.
Breeding
Breeding Hyphessobrycon weitzmanorum follows the standard small-tetra protocol. A conditioning tank or breeding tank with a substrate of fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or synthetic spawning mops placed over a mesh or glass-bead layer is suitable; the mesh prevents the adults from consuming the eggs, which they will do readily. Water should be soft and mildly acidic (pH around 5.5–6.5, hardness 1–5 GH) and temperature kept in the tropical range (73–81 °F), with gentle filtration and reduced lighting.
Eggs are adhesive and small, characteristic of the genus. Incubation takes a few days at typical breeding temperatures, and the fry are initially very small, requiring infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and finely powdered prepared foods. Adults should be removed after spawning. Because the species is uncommon in the hobby, detailed published breeding data are sparse, but its biology does not differ materially from the general Hyphessobrycon pattern.
In the aquarium
The Steel Blue Tetra is an uncommon but rewarding small tetra for aquarists interested in less frequently kept species. It is peaceful, sociable, and best maintained as a group of six or more individuals, where it will school loosely and display its dark, metallic colouration to best effect. A densely planted aquarium with dark substrate, subdued or dappled lighting, and some open mid-water swimming space makes an ideal setting — conditions that replicate the clearwater gallery-forest streams of the Cerrado.
Water should be soft, slightly acidic to neutral, and warm: temperature 73–81 °F, pH 5.5–7.5, and moderate water hardness. The species is not demanding compared to many soft-water specialists but responds well to conditions close to its natural range, particularly for colour expression. Tankmates should be similarly sized and peaceful — other small tetras, dwarf cichlids, small rasboras, and Corydoras catfish all make compatible companions. Because wild-caught stock is rarely available and captive-bred material is not yet widespread, sourcing the species may require specialist contacts within the hobby.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon weitzmanorum is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 7 November 2018. The DD listing reflects the limited information available about the species' abundance, population trends, and specific threats rather than a determination that it is secure. No specific threats are documented in the assessment.
The upper Rio Araguaia basin, where weitzmanorum is known to occur, is part of the Brazilian Cerrado — one of the world's most biodiverse and most threatened savanna biomes, subject to extensive agricultural conversion, deforestation of riparian gallery forests, dam construction, and water extraction. These pressures affect stream habitats broadly across the basin, and the restricted known range of weitzmanorum suggests it could be vulnerable to habitat alteration even if robust data on its population status are presently lacking. A formal population assessment and targeted field surveys would be needed to determine whether the species warrants a threatened category.
