A small, slender characin from the Guamá River basin of north-eastern Brazil, Hyphessobrycon werneri was described by Jacques Géry and Andrew Uj in 1987 and named in honour of the aquarium importer Arthur Werner. Reaching around 1.5 in standard length, it belongs to the large and diverse genus Hyphessobrycon — one of the most species-rich among the New World tetras — and remains little studied in both the wild and the aquarium hobby. The IUCN assessed it as Data Deficient in 2018, reflecting genuine gaps in population and ecological knowledge rather than any presumption of safety.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon werneri was described by the French-born ichthyologist Jacques Géry and his collaborator Andrew Uj in 1987. The valid name, with the authority Géry & Uj, 1987, is confirmed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong), the governing reference for valid fish nomenclature. Because the species was placed in Hyphessobrycon in the original description and has not been moved, no parenthetical authority is used.

Hyphessobrycon is one of the largest and most taxonomically challenging genera in the family Characidae, encompassing hundreds of small tetras distributed across South and Central America. The genus has been the subject of repeated revisions and phylogenetic reassessments, and the boundaries of several species groups within it remain unsettled. H. werneri has not been the focus of major revisionary work and sits without a formally defined species group assignment in most treatments.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon werneri is a small fish, recorded to a maximum of 1.5 in standard length on FishBase. Like the majority of its congeners it is a slender, laterally compressed characin with the typical Hyphessobrycon body plan: relatively large eyes, a small terminal mouth, a single dorsal fin, and the adipose fin that characterises the family Characidae.

Detailed meristic and colour descriptions from the original 1987 description are not reproduced here, as the publication has not been widely digitised and secondary sources offer limited morphological detail. The species is broadly similar in build to other small Hyphessobrycon from Atlantic-slope drainages of Brazil, and published images show a translucent silvery body with subdued markings. Specific colour pattern data beyond what appears in FishBase imagery remains sparse in accessible literature.

Habitat

Hyphessobrycon werneri is known from the Guamá River basin in the state of Pará, north-eastern Brazil — an Atlantic-slope drainage flowing north-east to empty near Belém. The Guamá system drains lowland Amazonian-influenced forests and runs through terrain that transitions between upland and várzea (seasonally flooded) zones.

FishBase records the species as a freshwater, benthopelagic fish with a reported temperature range of 72–81 °F and pH tolerance of 5.6–7.0, with hardness up to dH 7–20. These parameters are consistent with the blackwater and clearwater streams typical of much of the north-eastern Brazilian Amazon fringe, where water tends to be soft, slightly acidic, and low in dissolved minerals. Detailed microhabitat observations — substrate preferences, association with particular vegetation types, or depth range — have not been published in accessible sources.

Feeding

FishBase assigns Hyphessobrycon werneri a trophic level of 2.9, placing it firmly in the omnivore category — consistent with the feeding ecology of the genus as a whole. Small Hyphessobrycon in the wild typically exploit a mixture of microinvertebrates, insect larvae, small crustaceans, and plant or algal material, with diet composition shifting opportunistically by season and availability.

No gut-content studies specific to H. werneri have been published. In the aquarium, congeners of similar size accept a wide range of prepared and live foods: micro-flake, small-grade pellets, finely powdered freeze-dried foods, and live or frozen items such as Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and micro-worms. A varied diet is recommended to maintain condition and promote natural colouring.

Mating

No field observations of mating behaviour have been published for Hyphessobrycon werneri specifically. Within the genus Hyphessobrycon, the predominant reproductive strategy is egg-scattering open spawning: males pursue females through fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or other dense substrates, and the pair release eggs and milt simultaneously in brief bursts, depositing small adhesive eggs among plant material. There is no pair bond and no territory defence between spawning events.

In genera that share this strategy, males typically exhibit intensified colouring and increased activity in the presence of rival males or responsive females. Spawning activity in related species tends to peak in the morning hours, and courtship is brief. The adhesive eggs are scattered among plant leaves and stems, where they rest without any parental attention.

Breeding

Hyphessobrycon werneri has not been documented as an established aquarium bred species in the accessible hobby literature, and captive breeding protocols specific to it have not been published. Based on the general biology of the genus, the expected reproductive pattern is egg-scattering with no parental care: adults will consume eggs immediately after laying, so separation of adults from the spawning substrate is necessary in any captive breeding attempt.

For congeners, standard practice involves conditioning a small group over live and frozen foods, spawning over a bed of fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or over synthetic spawning mops, then removing the adults once eggs are visible. Eggs typically hatch within 24–36 hours at tropical temperatures, and the larvae become free-swimming after a further day or two. First foods for fry are very fine: infusoria, commercially prepared liquid fry foods, rotifers, or freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii once the fry are large enough to take them.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon werneri is not a commonly available aquarium fish, and dedicated husbandry accounts are absent from the major hobby resources. The species' water parameter data — temperature 72–81 °F, pH 5.6–7.0, moderate hardness — suggests it would do well under the soft, slightly acidic conditions used for many small South American tetras, and those conditions should be the starting point for anyone keeping it.

As a small Hyphessobrycon it is almost certainly a shoaling species best kept in groups rather than as individuals or pairs. A well-planted aquarium with gentle filtration, subdued lighting, and dark substrate would replicate the likely conditions of its native blackwater streams and help the fish show natural behaviour. Tankmates should be similarly small and non-aggressive; other small tetras, pygmy corydoras, and small rasboras are appropriate candidates. Given its rarity in the trade, captive-bred stock — if available — should be preferred over wild-caught specimens.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon werneri is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent evaluation dated 7 November 2018. A Data Deficient designation means that available information is insufficient to make a direct or indirect assessment of extinction risk — it does not imply the species is necessarily secure, only that the evidence base is too thin for a category assignment. The Guamá River basin, the species' known range, lies within a region of north-eastern Brazil that has experienced substantial land-use pressure from agricultural expansion and deforestation.

Given how little is known about the species' population size, distribution extent, habitat requirements, and sensitivity to disturbance, the Data Deficient listing underlines the need for targeted field surveys. Until better data exist, the precautionary approach favours treating the species as potentially at risk and avoiding wild collection where captive-bred alternatives are available.
