Jupiaba polylepis is a small characid with a wide Amazonian range, recorded from the Xingu, Tocantins, Araguaia, and Paru de Oeste river basins in Brazil as well as coastal drainages in Suriname and Guyana. Originally described from British Guiana by Albert Günther in 1864 under the genus Tetragonopterus, it takes its specific name from the Greek for 'many scales' — a nod to the unusually high scale-row count that first distinguished it. Although not formally assessed by the IUCN, population-level surveys in the Xingu basin have flagged the species as sensitive to large-scale river impoundment.

Taxonomy & naming

Jupiaba polylepis was originally described by Albert Günther in 1864 as Tetragonopterus polylepis, with the type locality given as British Guiana and the holotype deposited at the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH 1845.3.5.33). The combination Jupiaba polylepis reflects the species' transfer to Jupiaba, a genus erected to accommodate a number of Amazonian and Guianan characids that share a suite of morphological characters distinguishing them from the broadly defined Tetragonopterus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats Jupiaba polylepis (Günther, 1864) as the valid name; the parenthetical authority marks the genus change from the original description.

Jupiaba is placed within the family Characidae, which encompasses the vast majority of New World tetras. The genus contains several dozen species distributed across Amazonian and Guianan drainages, and J. polylepis is among the earliest-described members. Its high scale-row count relative to congeners was the character that originally separated it at description and that is commemorated in the specific epithet.

Morphology

Jupiaba polylepis reaches a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 3.5 in SL, making it a medium-small characid. The body is moderately compressed and roughly fusiform, typical of the genus. The specific epithet refers directly to scale counts: the species bears more scale rows along the lateral line than is typical in closely related Jupiaba, which was the primary diagnostic character in Günther's original description.

Beyond the elevated scale count, J. polylepis shares the general Jupiaba body plan: a relatively large eye, a terminal mouth, and the single adipose fin present in nearly all characids. Live colouration data are sparse in the literature, but the species is presumed to show the silvery, lightly patterned flanks common to small-bodied Amazonian characids of this group. Definitive meristic data are available in the original description and in the Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (2003).

Habitat

Jupiaba polylepis occupies freshwater habitats across a broad arc of northern and central South America. Verified records place it in the Paru de Oeste, Xingu, Tocantins, and Araguaia river basins in Brazil and in coastal river systems of Suriname and Guyana, with the original type locality in what is now Guyana. The American Museum of Natural History's biogeographic survey of Amazonian fishes also documents the species from the Parnaíba drainage, extending its known range eastward.

Across this range the species is associated with the large lowland river systems and their tributaries that characterise the Amazonian and Guianan lowlands. In the Xingu basin, where assemblage surveys have been conducted before and after the Belo Monte dam impoundment, J. polylepis was recorded as an abundant component of the native fish community, suggesting it can reach high local densities in suitable free-flowing reaches. Detailed microhabitat preferences — substrate, flow, depth, and vegetation associations — are not well documented in the available literature.

Feeding

No dedicated feeding study for Jupiaba polylepis is available in the literature consulted. The species is a characid of the Jupiaba lineage, and congeners for which gut-content data exist are broadly omnivorous, consuming small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, allochthonous material, and plant fragments, with the precise diet varying by season and habitat. It is reasonable to treat J. polylepis as an opportunistic omnivore until stomach-content studies are published.

In the aquarium the species would be expected to accept a mixed diet of small dry foods supplemented with live or frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and small bloodworm. As with most small characids, offering a varied diet supports condition and natural colouring better than a single staple food.

Mating

No specific observations of courtship behaviour in Jupiaba polylepis have been published. The genus belongs to the Characidae, whose members are predominantly egg-scatterers that spawn among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over substrate without forming pair bonds or providing parental care. Males in related species typically pursue females and initiate spawning runs in open water or among plants.

Seasonal and diel patterns of reproductive activity in J. polylepis in the wild are not documented. Amazonian characids commonly exhibit reproductive seasonality tied to the flood pulse, with spawning peaks linked to rising water levels that provide access to flooded forest and additional spawning habitat, but this has not been confirmed specifically for this species.

Breeding

Jupiaba polylepis has not been documented as having been bred in captivity in the accessible hobby or scientific literature. By analogy with the broader Characidae, the species is expected to be an egg-scatterer depositing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, without parental care and with adults liable to consume eggs if not separated after spawning.

Should captive breeding be attempted, conditions typical for small Amazonian characids would serve as a starting point: warm, soft to moderately hard slightly acidic water, a spawning substrate of fine-leaved plants or synthetic mops, and removal of adults following spawning. Fry would require appropriately small first foods. Until breeding observations are published, specific recommendations remain speculative.

In the aquarium

Jupiaba polylepis is not an established aquarium fish and is rarely if ever available in the trade. No dedicated husbandry profile exists in the major hobbyist references consulted. Given its body size — up to about 3.5 in SL — and its membership in a genus of active, schooling characids, a tank of at least 31.5–39.5 in in length with open swimming space and some plant cover would be appropriate if the species were kept.

As with most small to mid-sized tetras, it would likely do best in a peaceful community of similarly sized fish, in water conditions approximating those of its native Amazonian and Guianan lowland rivers: warm (approximately 75–82 °F), soft to moderately hard, and near neutral to slightly acidic pH. The species' sensitivity to the habitat disruption documented in Xingu basin surveys may translate to a requirement for stable, well-oxygenated water in captivity, though this is inferential.

Conservation

Jupiaba polylepis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. Its broad distribution across multiple major South American drainages — Xingu, Tocantins, Araguaia, Paru de Oeste, and coastal Guianan rivers — suggests that the species as a whole is not immediately threatened with extinction, though no range-wide population estimate exists.

At the subpopulation level, concern has been raised specifically for the Xingu River population. A fish-assemblage study examining the effects of the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam (dos Santos et al., 2022) recorded J. polylepis as an abundant species prior to impoundment but documented a decline in post-damming surveys, classifying it among the species sensitive to large-scale river modification. The Xingu is one of the most biodiverse river systems in Amazonia, and large dams fundamentally alter flow regimes, sediment transport, and connectivity on which lotic-adapted characids depend. The species' situation in the Xingu underscores the conservation value of free-flowing Amazonian rivers even for species not currently on formal threatened-species lists.
