Lebiasina ardilai was described by Netto-Ferreira and colleagues in 2013, making it one of the more recently validated members of the genus. The valid name as governed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) is Lebiasina ardilai Netto-Ferreira et al., 2013.
The genus Lebiasina belongs to the family Lebiasinidae — one of two families (along with Ctenoluciidae) that together constitute the order-level group Characiformes: Lebiasiniformes in some phylogenies, though current consensus keeps them within Characiformes. Lebiasinidae encompasses the pencilfish genera (Nannostomus, Nannobrycon) alongside the larger, more carnivorous Lebiasina and its close relatives Piabucina and Derhamia. Lebiasina is the most species-rich genus in its subfamily, with species distributed across the Pacific-slope drainages of Colombia and Ecuador, the upper Orinoco basin, and parts of the Guiana Shield.

The micropredatory diet should be met with regular offerings of live or frozen invertebrates. These are not community fish in the conventional sense; their larger size and predatory nature mean they are best kept with robust, comparably sized tankmates or in a species-only setup.
