Taxonomy & naming
Lebiasina boruca was described by the American ichthyologist William A. Bussing in 1967 from specimens collected in the Río Boruca drainage of Costa Rica. The species belongs to Lebiasina, the nominal genus of the family Lebiasinidae — a group of small, elongate characiform fishes traditionally called pencilfishes, though that common name is shared loosely with the unrelated genus Nannostomus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid name as Lebiasina boruca Bussing, 1967.
Within the Lebiasinidae, Lebiasina itself is the most diverse and geographically widespread genus, ranging across tropical South America from the Guianas to the upper Amazon and Paraná basins, with a small number of species reaching the Pacific slopes of Ecuador, Colombia, and — exceptionally — southern Central America. Lebiasina boruca is among the northernmost representatives of the genus, its occurrence in Costa Rica representing a distributional outlier from the largely South American radiation. Its exact phylogenetic placement within Lebiasina has not been resolved in widely published modern revisions, and the genus as a whole is in need of comprehensive systematic revision.
Morphology
Like other members of Lebiasina, L. boruca is an elongate, relatively slender fish with the fusiform, pencil-like body form that gives the family its vernacular name. The body is rounded in cross-section, tapering toward a slightly forked or truncate tail, with the dorsal fin positioned roughly over the midpoint of the body. The adipose fin is typically absent or vestigial in the genus.
No maximum standard length has been recorded in FishBase for this species, and published size data are sparse. Members of Lebiasina from Pacific-slope Central American drainages are generally small fishes reaching a few centimetres in standard length, consistent with the size range of congeners in comparable habitats. Coloration in the genus characteristically involves a bold lateral stripe running from the snout to the caudal peduncle, often set against a pale or silvery flank, with variable amounts of reddish or orange pigment in the body and fins — a pattern shared in broad outline by many lebiasinids. Precise colour details for live L. boruca specimens are not well documented in the available literature.
Habitat
Lebiasina boruca is endemic to the Río Boruca drainage on the Pacific slope of southern Costa Rica. This region falls within the humid lowland and foothill zone of the Osa–Térraba watershed, an area characterized by warm, clear-to-lightly-turbid streams draining forested terrain. Pacific-slope streams in this part of Costa Rica are typically soft to moderately hard, circumneutral to slightly acidic, and seasonally variable in flow, with leaf litter, submerged roots, and overhanging riparian vegetation providing cover and foraging habitat.
Lebiasinids in general favour heavily vegetated or well-shaded streams with moderate current and good dissolved oxygen levels. Within such habitats, Lebiasina species tend to occupy the mid- to upper water column, often in the shallower, more vegetated margins rather than open channel water. The specific microhabitat preferences of L. boruca have not been described in detail in accessible literature, and the species' ecology within the Río Boruca system remains largely unstudied.
Feeding
Lebiasina boruca is presumed to be an insectivore and opportunistic omnivore in the manner typical of lebiasinid pencilfishes. Members of the genus are surface and mid-water feeders that take small aquatic and terrestrial insects, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and other invertebrates, supplemented by algae and plant material where available. The natural diet of L. boruca specifically has not been documented in the accessible literature.
In a captive setting, Lebiasina species generally accept small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and chironomid larvae readily, along with fine flake and micro-pellet prepared foods. Given the paucity of captive-keeping records for L. boruca, husbandry recommendations must draw on the broader genus and family rather than species-specific experience.
Mating
No specific observations of mating behaviour in Lebiasina boruca have been published in the accessible literature. Lebiasinids in general are egg-scattering open spawners that deposit adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants, filamentous algae, or submerged leaf litter, with no parental care following spawning. Males typically display to females with lateral posturing and fin-spreading, and spawning takes place in vegetation or over substrate.
Within the family, some Lebiasina species are known to spawn in pairs or loose groups in shallow, well-vegetated stream margins. Sexual dimorphism in the genus is often subtle in preserved specimens, though breeding males of several congeners develop intensified coloration or minor fin modifications during the reproductive season. The reproductive behaviour of L. boruca specifically remains undocumented.
Breeding
Lebiasina boruca has not been reported in the aquarium trade literature as a species bred in captivity, and no breeding accounts are available in the accessible literature. Based on the biology of congeners, the species would be expected to spawn in the egg-scattering manner typical of lebiasinids: adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants or fibrous substrate, with no parental care and adults likely to consume eggs if not removed.
Water conditions at the type locality suggest that spawning is likely to occur at warm, soft-to-moderately-hard conditions reflecting the Pacific-slope stream environment. Incubation periods and fry requirements are unstudied for this species. Should captive specimens become available, a well-planted, species-specific aquarium with gentle flow and access to small live foods would provide a reasonable starting point based on family-level husbandry experience.
In the aquarium
Lebiasina boruca is not established in the ornamental fish trade and is effectively unknown in the hobby. No captive-keeping records appear in accessible aquarium literature, and specimens are not commercially available. The species is a scientific curiosity rather than an aquarium subject at present, and any husbandry notes must be extrapolated from experience with related lebiasinids.
Were specimens to become available, general Lebiasina husbandry would apply: a smaller aquarium of 23.5 in or more, well planted with fine-leaved vegetation, soft to moderately hard neutral water in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, and a diet of small live and frozen invertebrates supplemented with fine prepared foods. As a Central American stream fish from clear, shaded habitat, it would likely benefit from moderate water movement and good oxygenation. Given its limited range and unstudied status, any captive holdings would carry conservation and scientific value beyond ornamental interest.
Conservation
Lebiasina boruca has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no current threat category. Its known distribution is restricted to the Río Boruca drainage of southern Costa Rica — a range that is inherently limited and renders the species potentially vulnerable to localised habitat degradation, even in the absence of a formal risk evaluation.
The Pacific-slope drainages of southern Costa Rica include areas of ongoing agricultural expansion, deforestation, and watershed modification, pressures that threaten endemic stream fishes throughout the region. The broader Lebiasina fauna of Central America is poorly studied, and population trends for L. boruca are unknown. Until a formal assessment is conducted, the precautionary principle suggests treating the species as potentially sensitive given its restricted natural range, and future IUCN evaluation would be a meaningful contribution to its conservation status.
