The genus Lebiasina belongs to the family Lebiasinidae, the pencilfish-and-splashing-tetra family within the order Characiformes. As with other lebiasinids, spawning activity is stimulated by stable, warm water conditions, soft and acidic chemistry, and the presence of spawning substrate — fine-leaved plants, java moss, or spawning mops replicate the natural medium. Breeding

The species is peaceful and best kept in groups with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. Other small lebiasinids, dwarf pencilfish, small South American tetras, and Corydoras make suitable companions. At roughly 2 in it is not large and should not be housed with significantly larger or predatory fish. Feeding poses no special difficulty once the fish is settled; it will accept dry foods readily after an acclimatisation period.
