A slender, patterned pencilfish from the slow blackwater streams of Guyana, Nannostomus espei is one of the smaller members of its genus, reaching just 1.5 in. It carries a bold dark lateral stripe broken into a chain of chevron-like bars, giving it the hobbyist name barred pencilfish. Peaceful and undemanding when kept in a species group with appropriately soft, acidic water, it rewards patient observation with subtle colour shifts and the characteristic oblique resting posture shared by all pencilfish.

Taxonomy & naming

Nannostomus espei was described by Hans Meinken in 1956. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Nannostomus espei (Meinken, 1956), with the authority in parentheses because Meinken originally placed the species in a different genus before it was transferred to Nannostomus. The genus Nannostomus belongs to the family Lebiasinidae, the pencilfish family within the order Characiformes.

Nannostomus is a diverse genus of small, pencil-shaped characiforms distributed across the lowland river basins of tropical South America, particularly in Guyana, the Amazon, and the Orinoco drainages. The species epithet espei is an eponym; it honours the German fish enthusiast Espe, who apparently first brought the species to the attention of science, though bibliographic details of the original description are sparse in available sources. N. espei is closely related to other barred-pattern pencilfish such as N. eques and N. unifasciatus, and can be distinguished by the number and arrangement of its lateral bars and its maximum size.

Morphology

Nannostomus espei is a small, elongate species reaching a maximum recorded length of approximately 1.5 in total length. The body is slender and fusiform — the pencil-shaped build that gives the genus its common name — with a moderately pointed snout and a small, upturned mouth positioned for surface and mid-water feeding.

The colour pattern consists of a prominent, dark brown to black lateral stripe running from the snout tip to the caudal peduncle, broken into a series of triangular or chevron-shaped blotches rather than a continuous band; this fragmented, bar-like appearance is the source of the name barred pencilfish. A pale cream to golden stripe runs above the lateral dark mark, and the lower body is silvery. The caudal fin may show a reddish wash, particularly in males in good condition. Like other Nannostomus, the species adopts a characteristic oblique resting posture, angled head-up, which is most noticeable when the fish is stationary among vegetation.

Habitat

Nannostomus espei is native to the coastal river drainages of Guyana in northeastern South America, where it inhabits slow-moving to standing blackwater and clearwater environments: small streams, forest pools, floodplain pools, and the marginal shallows of larger watercourses. These are typically heavily shaded habitats with dense riparian and aquatic vegetation, a substrate of leaf litter and fine sand, and water stained dark amber by humic and tannic acids leaching from decaying organic matter.

The water in these habitats is characteristically soft, very low in dissolved minerals, and acidic, with pH values in the range of roughly 4.5 to 6.5 and negligible hardness. Temperatures are warm but not extreme, generally in the range of 75–82 °F. Light penetration is often low. These conditions — the blackwater forest stream — are shared by many small characiforms of the Guyanan and Amazonian lowlands and define the water chemistry requirements the species retains in captivity.

Feeding

Nannostomus espei is a micropredator and opportunistic feeder in the wild, taking small invertebrates such as insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, zooplankton, and any other small prey items available in its habitat. The upturned mouth and mid-water to surface orientation reflect a feeding strategy focused on the water column and the surface film.

In the aquarium the species accepts a wide range of small prepared foods including finely crushed flake and micro-pellets, but does best when live and frozen micro-foods form a regular part of the diet. Suitable foods include baby brine shrimp, micro-worms, Daphnia, Moina, and Cyclops. The small size of the mouth sets an upper limit on particle size, and foods that are too large will be refused. Frequent, small feedings suit its feeding style better than one large daily meal.

Mating

Nannostomus espei is an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, following the typical reproductive strategy of the genus. Males become more intensely coloured during courtship — the lateral markings deepen and any reddish fin colouration brightens — and engage in active pursuit and display behaviour around receptive females.

Spawning takes place among fine-leaved aquatic plants or roots, where eggs are scattered and adhere loosely to the vegetation. Both sexes will consume eggs given the opportunity, so conditioning pairs separately and providing dense spawning cover helps to maximise the number of eggs that escape predation. In a well-planted group tank, small numbers of fry may appear without deliberate intervention, though survival is low without managed separation.

Breeding

To breed Nannostomus espei deliberately, a small, species-only tank of 10–15 US gal with very soft, acidic water (pH 5.5–6.5, hardness below 5 °dH) and a temperature of around 79–82 °F provides the right conditions. A layer of fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or Vesicularia, or synthetic spawning mops, gives the fish spawning substrate and the eggs some protection. Dim lighting reduces fish stress and adult egg predation.

Adults should be removed after spawning. The small, adhesive eggs hatch in approximately two to three days at breeding temperature. The tiny fry initially absorb their yolk sac while hanging from plant surfaces, then begin to swim freely and require very fine first foods such as infusoria, paramecia, or commercial liquid fry food before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Growth is slow; juveniles are delicate for the first few weeks and water quality must be kept excellent. Full adult colouration develops over several months.

In the aquarium

Nannostomus espei is a good choice for a small blackwater biotope aquarium or a peaceful community of soft-water species. A group of six or more shows the most natural behaviour and allows the fish to form the loose aggregations they maintain in the wild. A tank of 10–15 US gal or more, well-planted and dimly lit with leaf litter and driftwood to tannin the water, suits the species well. Soft, warm, acid water is essential — the fish does poorly and may be prone to disease in hard alkaline tap water without conditioning.

Tankmates should be similarly small and non-aggressive: other pencilfish, small Apistogramma or dwarf cichlids that share the biotope, small rasboras, or peaceful nano-tetras. Avoid any fish large or active enough to intimidate the pencilfish, as they are timid and easily outcompeted at feeding. The species is hardy once settled into appropriate conditions, but the acclimatisation period to a new tank can be stressful; slow, careful introduction and stable water chemistry minimise losses. Lifespan in captivity is typically three to five years with good care.

Conservation

Nannostomus espei has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; no published assessment or Red List entry was found in available sources. It is therefore treated as Not Evaluated (NE) for the purposes of this article. The species is collected from Guyana for the ornamental trade, and Guyanese pencilfish exports have at times been substantial, but no population-level data are available to evaluate whether trade pressure is sustainable.

The coastal forest streams and blackwater habitats of Guyana that the species occupies face ongoing pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion, and mining activity, all of which degrade water quality and reduce habitat extent. Captive breeding is possible and is practised by some specialists, which reduces reliance on wild-caught fish for the hobby supply. Sourcing captive-bred specimens, where available, is advisable as a precautionary measure until a proper IUCN assessment is carried out.
