Nannostomus limatus was described by Stanley H. Weitzman in 1978. It belongs to the genus Nannostomus Günther, 1872, the pencilfish, which sits within the family Lebiasinidae — a family of small, elongated characiform fishes confined to Central and South America. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Nannostomus limatus Weitzman, 1978 as the valid name; no synonyms are currently recognised.
The pencilfish are characterised by their slender, almost cylindrical bodies, a distinctive nocturnal 'oblique' resting posture many species adopt, and a lateral stripe pattern that varies diagnostically between species. N. limatus is distinguished within the genus by the combination of its slender form, relatively muted colour pattern, and the details of its lateral markings. The specific epithet limatus is from the Latin for 'polished' or 'refined', likely an allusion to the fish's elegant, clean-lined appearance.
Morphology
Nannostomus limatus is a slender pencilfish reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length according to FishBase; hobby sources suggest it may occasionally reach close to 1.5 in total length. The body is elongate and nearly cylindrical — typical of the genus — with a small, upward-angled mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding.
The colour pattern follows the classic pencilfish template: a bold dark lateral stripe runs from the snout through the eye to the caudal peduncle, backed by a paler gold or silvery stripe above it. The fins are largely hyaline. Like other pencilfish, N. limatus adopts a head-up oblique angle at rest, particularly at night, which is thought to be a form of stick or twig mimicry. Sexual dimorphism is subtle; females are generally slightly deeper in the body when in spawning condition, while males may show marginally brighter markings, but the species is not as strikingly dichromatic as some of its congeners.
Habitat
The species is known from the Amazon River basin in the vicinity of Santarém, Pará state, Brazil, with records specifically associated with the Lake Mapiri area. It inhabits tributaries, small rivers, swampy backwaters, and densely vegetated areas, including zones with abundant leaf litter — the kind of slow-moving, tannic, low-conductivity environment typical of pencilfish across the genus.
Water conditions in these habitats are characteristically soft and acidic: pH values reported for the species range from 4.5 to 7.0, and temperatures from roughly 72–82 °F (72–82 °F). The fish are benthopelagic, spending time near vegetation and submerged structure rather than in open water. Dense plant growth, leaf litter, and the resulting dim, amber-tinted water appear to be key habitat features.
Feeding
Nannostomus limatus is a micropredator in the wild, taking small invertebrates such as insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and other tiny organisms encountered in vegetated and leaf-litter habitats. Its small, upturned mouth is adapted for picking prey from the water surface or from plant surfaces rather than bottom-feeding.
In aquarium conditions it accepts a range of small, appropriately sized foods: live and frozen Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii and adults, microworms, and other micro-invertebrates. It will also take suitably fine prepared foods, though a diet weighted toward live and frozen items better matches its natural feeding behaviour and keeps fish in good condition. Foods should be small enough to be taken comfortably — even standard small flake may be too large for some individuals.
Mating
No aquarium breeding of Nannostomus limatus has been formally documented in the literature, and confirmed accounts from hobbyists are very sparse — a reflection of how rarely the species appears in the trade. Based on the biology of closely related pencilfish, the species is expected to be an egg-scatterer that deposits small adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or Java moss, with no parental care from either sex.
In other Nannostomus species, males court females with lateral displays and brief chases before spawning in vegetation, often among the thinnest, most feathery plant material available. The oblique resting posture typical of pencilfish may also play a role in intraspecific communication. Until captive breeding accounts for N. limatus specifically are documented, details about courtship behaviour, spawning triggers, and pair dynamics remain extrapolated from congeners.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Nannostomus limatus has not been reliably reported in the aquarium hobby, and no detailed breeding account is available in the published literature. The species is rare enough in trade that few hobbyists have had the opportunity to attempt it.
By analogy with other pencilfish, conditioning with live and frozen foods in soft, slightly acidic water would likely be the starting point. Pairs or small groups would be expected to scatter small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops; eggs of related species hatch in roughly 36–72 hours, with fry becoming free-swimming a few days later. First foods would need to be very fine — infusoria-grade or commercial micro-fry foods — before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Adults should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation. These details remain inferred from Nannostomus spp. generally rather than confirmed for this species.
In the aquarium
Nannostomus limatus is rarely available in the aquarium trade and must be considered a specialist fish rather than a common community species. When obtained, it should be kept in a mature, well-planted aquarium with soft, acidic water (pH 4.5–7.0, temperature 72–82 °F), subdued lighting, and a dark substrate to encourage natural behaviour and reduce stress. Leaf litter adds both tannins and cover.
As with all pencilfish, it is a peaceful and somewhat timid species best kept in a group of six or more of its own kind; conspecific company reduces skittishness. Tankmates, if any, should be small, non-aggressive species of a similar size — other small characins, dwarf corydoras, or similarly gentle nano fish. Robust, fast-moving species or anything likely to compete aggressively for food are poor choices. The small mouth means all foods must be appropriately fine. Because aquarium breeding has not been documented, the emphasis for this species is on careful husbandry and stable water quality rather than on breeding attempts.
Conservation
Nannostomus limatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with an assessment date of 7 November 2018. Its known range is centred on the Amazon basin near Santarém in Pará state, Brazil, an area that encompasses substantial Amazonian forest and wetland habitat.
Although it carries no immediate threat designation, the species is genuinely uncommon in collections and rarely encountered in the trade, which may reflect limited collecting effort in its specific range as much as absolute rarity in the wild. Broader threats to Amazonian freshwater habitats — deforestation, wetland conversion, and water quality degradation — apply to its range, though no specific population-level data for this species are available. Its Least Concern status should be understood in the context of limited distributional data rather than confirmed abundance.
