Taxonomy & naming
Nannostomus marginatus was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1909, with the type locality recorded as Maduni Creek in Guyana. The valid name as maintained in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Nannostomus marginatus Eigenmann, 1909; the authority is not parenthesised because the species was described in Nannostomus and remains there.
The genus Nannostomus belongs to the family Lebiasinidae, the pencilfishes and their allies within the order Characiformes. Lebiasinidae is a neotropical family of small to medium-sized characoids whose members lack an adipose fin in most genera and share a body form suited to life in still or sluggish, often oxygen-limited waters. Nannostomus is the most species-rich genus in the family, comprising the pencilfish proper — slender, stripe-bodied fishes that hover obliquely when resting and often adopt a head-up posture at night, a behaviour distinct from their daytime horizontal swimming attitude.
The specific epithet marginatus derives from the Latin marginatus, meaning bordered or edged, a reference to the dark-bordered stripes that define the species' colour pattern. Within Nannostomus, N. marginatus is allied with several other striped, small-bodied pencilfishes and is considered one of the more widespread representatives of the genus.
Morphology
Nannostomus marginatus is a pencil-slim, laterally compressed fish reaching a maximum total length of approximately 1.5 in, making it one of the smallest pencilfishes in the genus. The body is elongate and cylindrical, tapering gently toward a slightly forked tail, and the fish lacks the adipose fin that is present in many other characoids. The mouth is small and terminal, well suited to picking at tiny invertebrates rather than engulfing larger prey.
The colour pattern is defined by three parallel dark-brown to black horizontal stripes running from the snout to the base of the tail: a mid-lateral stripe along the body centre, a dorsal stripe near the back, and a ventral stripe along the lower flank. The ground colour between the stripes is pale gold to silvery-cream, and the edges of the stripes are often finely outlined in pale gold. The most distinctive colour feature is a series of brilliant red patches — typically appearing at the base of the dorsal fin, along the lower stripe in the mid-body region, and at the caudal peduncle — that intensify to near-scarlet in a breeding male displaying his best condition.
Sexual dimorphism is modest but consistent. Males tend to be slightly slimmer and show more intense red coloration. Females are discernibly rounder in the belly, particularly when gravid, and their red markings are generally paler or reduced. Both sexes display the characteristic nocturnal posture shift, angling steeply head-up or head-down among plants as the tank dims.
Habitat
Nannostomus marginatus inhabits sluggish tributaries, swampy marginal areas, flooded forest, and floodplain lakes across its range. It is strongly associated with blackwater environments — tea-coloured, humic-acid-rich waters stained by decomposing leaf litter and forest vegetation — where pH can fall below 5.5 and conductivity is extremely low. Dense surface and emergent vegetation and accumulated leaf litter on the substrate characterise the microhabitats this species favours, providing cover from predators and a hunting ground for the minute invertebrates and zooplankton that form its diet.
The species is benthopelagic in its behaviour, hovering in the lower and middle water column among plant stems and root tangles rather than occupying the open water column. Water conditions in its core range are consistently soft and acidic: Seriously Fish records pH around 5.76 and hardness near zero in typical collection sites, with temperatures around 75–79 °F.
The documented range spans Guyana (including the type locality, Maduni Creek) and Suriname in the Guianas, as well as the middle-to-lower Amazon basin east of the Andes in Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, and Brazil. FishBase records distribution across this broad swathe of northern South America, making N. marginatus one of the more geographically widespread pencilfishes despite its preference for specialised blackwater habitats.
Feeding
Nannostomus marginatus is a micropredator in the wild, subsisting on tiny invertebrates and zooplankton — items including copepods, small insect larvae, and other minute organisms that are abundant in the leaf-litter zones and surface films of blackwater habitats. The small, precise mouth is fitted to this diet; the fish picks individual prey items rather than filter-feeding or engulfing larger items.
In the aquarium it will accept dried foods including micro-pellets and finely crushed flake, but its long-term health and colour depend on a substantial proportion of small live or frozen foods. Artemia nauplii (newly hatched brine shrimp), Moina, and grindal worms are particularly well received and should form the backbone of a conditioning diet. Daphnia and microworms are also taken readily. Because the fish is very small and slow at the feeding station, it should never be kept with faster or more boisterous feeders that will monopolise food before the pencilfishes can reach it.
Feeding in small amounts several times a day better reflects the fish's natural foraging pace than a single large daily ration, and keeping the tank well planted or with a leaf-litter layer helps replicate the micro-invertebrate community the species exploits in nature, including colonising infusoria and small worms that colonise decaying matter.
Mating
Nannostomus marginatus is an egg-scattering species with no parental care. Males court females with subtle fin displays — the dorsal and anal fins are extended and the vivid red patches on the flanks are shown to full advantage as a male positions himself alongside or slightly ahead of a receptive female. Because the fish is small and the displays understated compared with larger characids, the courtship can be easy to miss in a planted community tank.
Spawning is not strongly seasonal in captivity and can occur in a mature, well-planted aquarium without deliberate intervention by the aquarist. The pair weave among the stems and fine leaves of aquatic plants, releasing small numbers of adhesive eggs that cling to the vegetation. The male and female do not bond, and a male may attempt to spawn with more than one female during a session. As is typical for egg-scattering characoids, the adults pay no attention to the eggs after deposition and will readily consume them if given the opportunity.
The nocturnal posture shift that pencilfishes exhibit — tilting steeply head-up or head-down among plant stems — is thought to be a predator-avoidance behaviour, allowing the fish to blend with stem and root structures in the low-light hours. This behaviour is consistent across the genus and does not appear to be related to reproductive readiness.
Breeding
Controlled breeding of Nannostomus marginatus is considered rare in captivity according to Seriously Fish, though a densely planted, mature aquarium running at appropriate water chemistry may produce fry without deliberate intervention. For a reliable yield, a separate breeding container is recommended: a small, bare-bottomed or moss-lined tank with aged, soft, acidic water (pH around 5.5–6.5, conductivity very low), maintained at 77–79 °F. Adding a mesh or grid above the bottom prevents the adults from reaching settled eggs, and clumps of fine-leaved plants such as java moss or synthetic spawning mops serve as spawning substrate.
After conditioning the prospective pair on a diet of live and frozen foods, they can be introduced to the breeding tank in the evening. Spawning typically occurs in the early morning hours, with the pair depositing small adhesive eggs among the plant leaves. The adults should be removed once eggs are observed, as they offer no care and will consume the spawn. Egg numbers are modest — consistent with the fish's small body size and daily-scattering reproductive strategy rather than a single large clutch event.
The eggs hatch in approximately three to four days at 77–79 °F. The tiny fry are very small at hatching and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as first foods for the first several days before they are large enough to take newly hatched Artemia nauplii. Growth is slow, and the characteristic red markings and full adult colour develop gradually over several months as the fish approach maturity.
In the aquarium
Nannostomus marginatus is best suited to a quiet, well-planted nano or species tank, or a carefully chosen community where all tankmates are similarly small and non-competitive. Given its maximum size of around 1.5 in and its preference for still or very gently filtered water, a tank of 10–15 US gal planted with fine-leaved and stem plants — java moss, hornwort, ambulia, or similar — with a layer of dried leaf litter and darkened water (achieved with peat filtration or Indian almond leaves) provides near-ideal conditions. Dim lighting encourages natural behaviour and makes the fish's red markings show more vividly than under harsh fluorescent light.
Water chemistry should replicate the soft, acidic blackwater conditions of the wild habitat: pH in the range of 5.5–7.0, very soft water, and temperature 75–79 °F. The species is intolerant of elevated nitrates and poor filtration — regular water changes and a mature, stable tank are more important than hitting exact pH targets. FishBase gives a temperature range of 75–79 °F and a pH tolerance of 5.8–7.5 for the species. It should not be combined with boisterous feeders, fin-nippers, or any fish large enough to view the pencilfish as prey; ideal companions include small rasboras, dwarf corydoras, ember tetras, and other Nannostomus species of similar temperament and size.
A group of six or more individuals is recommended to reduce inter-male squabbling and bring out natural schooling and courtship behaviour. The fish is sensitive to fluctuating or deteriorating water conditions and responds poorly to large or sudden water changes; small, frequent changes with well-matched water are safer than large weekly changes. With attentive husbandry it is a long-lived and rewarding fish for the patient aquarist.
Conservation
Nannostomus marginatus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; no dedicated assessment page exists for the species, and any status attributed to it on aggregator sites appears to be inferred rather than primary. The cache records the species as Not Evaluated (NE) by IUCN.
Given its wide distribution across Guyana, Suriname, and the Amazon basin, N. marginatus does not appear to face the same acute conservation pressures as range-restricted species. However, blackwater habitats throughout its range are subject to ongoing deforestation, agricultural runoff, and water-quality degradation that alter the soft, acidic conditions the species requires. Like most small Amazonian fish, it has historically been collected for the ornamental trade, though the extent to which wild-caught versus captive-bred individuals supply the current trade is not well documented.
The species is regularly bred in captivity — albeit with some difficulty — and captive-bred stock is available in the hobby, which reduces pressure on wild populations where trade collection does occur. The broader conservation priority for the fish is the preservation of intact blackwater forest habitats across its range, which support not only this species but a rich community of similarly specialised small fishes.
