Nannostomus nitidus was described by Stanley H. Weitzman in 1978. The type locality is the Igarapé Candiru-Mirim, a small tributary of the Rio Capim drainage in Pará state, Brazil. The species belongs to Nannostomus, the pencilfish genus within the family Lebiasinidae — the pencil-and-splashing tetras. Nannostomus is a compact neotropical genus of small, elongate fishes that share the characteristic 'pencil' body form and a pattern of horizontal dark stripes on a pale or yellowish ground colour. Nannostomus nitidus fits within this genus without controversy; no reclassification has been proposed, and it sits comfortably alongside its more widely kept relatives such as N. marginatus and N. eques in both appearance and ecology.
Morphology
Nannostomus nitidus is a slender, fusiform pencilfish reaching 1–1.5 in standard length, making it one of the smaller members of its genus. The body is strongly elongate and only lightly compressed laterally, giving it the narrow, needle-like silhouette typical of Nannostomus. The mouth is small and terminal, the fins modest, and the overall impression is of a clean, smooth little fish — the specific epithet nitidus, Latin for 'shining' or 'gleaming', captures the polished quality of the flanks.
Like other pencilfish, N. nitidus carries a dark midlateral stripe running from the snout tip to the base of the caudal fin, bordered above by a pale or golden stripe. A second, lower stripe may be present depending on the angle of light and the fish's state of arousal. Coloration varies between day and night activity phases: at rest or in low light, a distinctive nocturnal barring pattern replaces the daytime horizontal stripe arrangement, a trait shared across the genus. Sexual dimorphism is subtle; females tend toward a slightly fuller abdomen when in breeding condition, while males may show marginally more vivid iridescence.
Habitat
Nannostomus nitidus is recorded from Pará state in northern Brazil, with its confirmed type locality in the Rio Capim system — a tributary of the lower Amazon basin — and additional records from the Santarém and Fortaleza areas, though those outlying localities remain to be fully confirmed. The species inhabits sluggish to near-still waters: small tributary streams (igarapés), swampy marginal areas, and oxbow-like pockets where flow is minimal and submerged structure is dense.
The microhabitat is heavily vegetated and structurally complex, with submerged macrophytes, woody debris, leaf litter accumulations, and overhanging bank vegetation providing both shelter and foraging substrate. Water chemistry in these Pará igarapés is soft and acidic, influenced by organic decomposition in the surrounding forest floor: Seriously Fish reports a temperature range of 73–82 °F, pH 4.0–7.0, and conductivity of approximately 18–143 ppm (microsiemens). These are the classic parameters of blackwater or clearwater Amazonian tributaries — low mineral content, high tannin load, and negligible carbonate hardness.
Feeding
Nannostomus nitidus is a micropredator in the wild, feeding principally on zooplankton and small invertebrates at or near the surface and mid-water column. The small mouth constrains prey size to copepods, ostracods, small insect larvae, and similar items that drift or swim within reach of the fish's upward-angled ambush posture — a feeding stance typical of many pencilfish.
In the aquarium the species accepts quality dried foods including fine-grade flake and micropellets, but regular live and frozen supplements are important for long-term health and good condition. Suitable items include Artemia nauplii, Moina, Daphnia, micro-worms, and grindal worms. Feeding once or twice daily in small quantities suits the fish's metabolic pace, and variety in the diet supports reproductive readiness. Because of the small mouth, food particle size matters; foods intended for larger tetras may simply be too large for Nannostomus nitidus to handle efficiently.
Mating
Nannostomus nitidus follows the egg-scattering reproductive pattern characteristic of the genus, with no pair bond formation and no parental investment beyond the act of spawning. Males become more active and display toward females with fin-spreading and parallel-swimming behaviours when in good condition. The small, streamlined body of the male means courtship is a subtle, close-quarters affair compared to the elaborate displays of larger characins, but interaction between individuals is clear when a group is kept together.
In common with other Nannostomus species, spawning is associated with fine-leaved aquatic plants or their analogues, where adhesive eggs are deposited among the leaves and leaf axils. The species is not a seasonal spawner under aquarium conditions and will attempt to spawn when water quality and temperature are stable and food supply is adequate, making continuous small clutches rather than a single large breeding event.
Breeding
Breeding Nannostomus nitidus follows the standard pencilfish protocol: condition the adults on live and frozen foods, provide clumps of fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops, and remove the adults once eggs are detected since they will consume them given the opportunity. Alternatively a separate, bare-bottomed or mesh-floored conditioning tank with spawning mops positioned above the mesh allows eggs to fall clear of the adults.
Eggs are small and adhesive, and fry reportedly emerge within approximately three days of spawning at the species' preferred temperatures — faster than many similar species, reflecting the warm, equatorial origins of the Rio Capim system. The fry are tiny at hatching and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as a first food before progressing to Artemia nauplii. Water quality in the rearing vessel must be maintained carefully as the fry are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite accumulation in the first weeks of life. Soft, slightly acidic water matching the adults' maintenance parameters is preferable for both incubation and early rearing.
In the aquarium
Nannostomus nitidus is a peaceful, somewhat timid species best suited to a densely planted aquarium of modest volume — a tank of 10–15 US gal or more with fine-leaved vegetation, floating plants to diffuse the light, a dark substrate, and low flow. It thrives in groups of eight or more individuals; solitary specimens or very small groups remain shy and rarely show the relaxed, mid-water behaviour that makes pencilfish rewarding to watch.
Water parameters should reflect the soft, acidic blackwater habitat: temperature 73–82 °F, pH ideally between 5.0 and 7.0, and very low hardness. The species does not tolerate hard, alkaline water well, and tap water in many regions will need dilution with RO or rainwater to achieve acceptable chemistry. Tankmates should be selected with care: other small, gentle species from similar water conditions — dwarf corydoras, small rasboras, other Nannostomus species, and diminutive apistogramma — make appropriate companions. Boisterous or large fish will stress it. Because of its size and the care requirements around water chemistry, N. nitidus is best regarded as a species for the experienced nano-aquarist rather than a beginner.
Conservation
