Nanocheirodon insignis is a diminutive Colombian characid reaching barely 1 in standard length, occupying warm, lowland freshwaters of northern South America. A peaceful, diurnal micro-tetra, it earned its specific epithet — insignis, meaning remarkable or distinguished — despite its modest size, and remains a fish of modest but steady hobby interest as an undemanding inhabitant of planted nano aquaria.

Taxonomy & naming

Nanocheirodon insignis was originally described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1880, giving the species an authority written in parentheses because it has since been transferred from the genus under which it was first placed. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats the valid name as Nanocheirodon insignis (Steindachner, 1880) within the family Characidae.

The genus Nanocheirodon is monotypic — N. insignis is its only species — and belongs to the hyperdiverse Characidae, the largest family of freshwater fishes. Historically this small tetra was placed in various allied genera before being assigned to Nanocheirodon. The type locality on record includes waters in the Rio Meta drainage of Colombia, specifically the Caño Giramena in a tributary of the Rio Brazo Pajure; distribution records also associate the species with the Lake Maracaibo basin and the Magdalena River system in Colombia.

Morphology

Nanocheirodon insignis is a slender, laterally compressed micro-tetra with a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 1 in in males and unsexed specimens — making it one of the smaller members of its family. The body is elongate and streamlined, well suited to open-water foraging in shallow tropical streams.

Like many small characids, it displays the family's characteristic adipose fin and a relatively large eye relative to its head length. Coloration is silvery, with the lateral line and scale edges producing a subtle metallic sheen under good lighting. Sexual dimorphism in coloration is subdued; females are typically more rounded in the abdomen when gravid. The species does not rival larger show tetras in spectacle, but its neat proportions and active swimming make it attractive at close quarters in a species-appropriate setting.

Habitat

Nanocheirodon insignis is distributed across northern Colombian freshwaters, with records from the Lake Maracaibo basin, the Magdalena River system, and the Rio Meta drainage — a broad lowland distribution spanning multiple major river systems. The Rio Meta is a major left-bank tributary of the Orinoco, while the Magdalena drains independently to the Caribbean; the presence of N. insignis in both systems is consistent with historical connections between these drainages.

As a pelagic freshwater tropical species, it occupies the water column of warm, slow to moderately flowing lowland streams, floodplain habitats, and associated still waters. Water temperatures in these Colombian lowland systems are consistently warm, typically in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius. The species is classified as a freshwater tropical by FishBase, with no special tolerance for brackish conditions.

Feeding

FishBase records mosquito larvae as part of the natural diet of Nanocheirodon insignis — a detail consistent with a small, diurnal, pelagic characid hunting near the water surface in warm lowland habitats where mosquito larvae are seasonally abundant. Like most micro-tetras, it is broadly insectivorous and likely takes a range of small aquatic invertebrates in the wild.

In the aquarium it accepts good-quality small-grade dry foods readily, including micro pellets and finely crushed flake. Live and frozen foods such as micro worms, baby brine shrimp, Daphnia, and Cyclops are relished and support conditioning for breeding. Its small gape means food particle size matters; foods sized for nano fish will be taken more reliably than standard-grade aquarium fare.

Mating

Nanocheirodon insignis is an egg-scattering characid with no parental care, following the open-spawning pattern typical of most small tetras. Courtship is brief; males pursue ripe females through vegetation or across open water, and spawning occurs in fine-leaved plants or among substrate debris where adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs come to rest.

Being diurnal and peaceful, males do not display aggressively toward one another in the manner of larger characids, and groups can be conditioned together without significant conflict. Bringing fish into breeding condition requires good water quality and a varied diet with live or frozen invertebrate foods.

Breeding

Breeding Nanocheirodon insignis follows the general micro-tetra approach: a conditioned group or pair is moved to a small, densely planted or moss-filled breeding tank with soft, slightly acid to neutral water and a temperature near the upper end of the species' preferred range. Fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or hornwort provide egg-laying sites; a mesh floor or spawning grid can help protect eggs from adult predation.

Eggs are small and adhesive, scattered among plants or deposited on fine substrate. Adults will consume both eggs and fry if not removed after spawning. Incubation at warm temperatures takes a few days, and the resulting fry are tiny — first foods of infusoria or commercial liquid fry food are needed before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Specific published data on clutch size and exact incubation times for this species are sparse; breeders should treat it as comparable to other micro-tetras of similar size.

In the aquarium

Nanocheirodon insignis is described as peaceful and diurnal, making it well suited to a community of similarly sized nano fish. A nano aquarium of 10–15 US gal planted with fine-leaved vegetation provides an appropriate setting; kept in groups of six or more it is more confident and active than solitary specimens. Its small size (under 1 in) means it is vulnerable alongside larger or more boisterous fish.

Water conditions should reflect its Colombian lowland origin: warm temperatures in the range of approximately 75–82 °F, with neutral to slightly acid to neutral pH and soft to moderately hard water. Regular water changes and good filtration are important, as micro-tetras are sensitive to accumulated nitrates. The species' calm temperament and modest requirements make it a rewarding choice for planted nano displays, particularly alongside dwarf shrimp and other small peaceful fish.

Conservation

FishBase records Nanocheirodon insignis as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in January 2021. The species' distribution across multiple major Colombian river basins — including the Magdalena, Maracaibo, and Meta systems — gives it a broader range than many endemic micro-tetras, and no acute threats specific to the species are documented in available sources.

Colombia's freshwater ecosystems face ongoing broad pressures including habitat degradation, agricultural runoff, and deforestation, which affect a wide range of lowland stream fish. For a species as small as N. insignis, aquarium populations are primarily tank-bred, reducing collection pressure on wild stocks. Its LC status reflects current assessment; continued monitoring of Colombian freshwater habitats is important for the many small characids that share its range.
