Odontostilbe roloffi is a small, slender characid from South America described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1972. Like other members of Odontostilbe, it is a schooling miniature tetra — a fish more likely to appear as a shimmering silver dash in a blackwater creek than on a dealer's stock list. Published data on the species remain sparse, reflecting the limited collecting effort in its range and the low commercial profile of most Odontostilbe in the ornamental trade.

The genus Odontostilbe Cope, 1870 belongs to the subfamily Cheirodontinae within the family Characidae, a placement supported by molecular and morphological work on the group. The genus name Odontostilbe combines the Greek odontos (tooth) and stilbe (brightness or glitter), broadly alluding to the gleaming, small-toothed character shared by these fish. A group of six or more would be appropriate for a species of this size and social nature, ideally in a species or biotope tank or alongside other small, non-aggressive fish of comparable size. Water temperature in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius, pH 5.5–7.0, and low to moderate hardness are reasonable starting parameters based on genus-level data. Fine prepared foods, Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and micro-worms would constitute a suitable diet.
