Taxonomy & naming

Piabina argentea was described by the Danish naturalist Johann Theodor Reinhardt in 1867, making it one of the older valid names in the family Characidae. Reinhardt's material came from Brazilian collections assembled during the nineteenth-century scientific expeditions that opened the interior drainages to European ichthyology. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) recognises the valid name as Piabina argentea Reinhardt, 1867.

The genus Piabina is a small characid lineage endemic to South American river systems. Within the family Characidae — itself one of the most species-rich freshwater fish families on Earth — Piabina occupies a modest niche as a small, schooling, primarily herbivorous or omnivorous characin. The genus name references the Brazilian vernacular term 'piabinha' or 'piaba', applied broadly to small silvery characids throughout the country, and has roots in the Tupi language tradition that contributed many fish names still in use in Brazilian ichthyology.

Morphology

Piabina argentea is a small, slender-bodied characid reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3 in, though most specimens encountered in field studies are considerably smaller — a population sampled in São Paulo's Ipanema National Forest ran from 1–2 in SL. The body is laterally compressed and fusiform, typical of an active schooling species that moves freely in mid-water and along the substrate in riverine habitats.

The common name 'silver piabina' captures the predominant colour tone: the flanks are silvery, with the reflective scales characteristic of many open-water characids that benefit from a mirror-like appearance in shoaling life. Like most small Characidae it possesses the family's defining adipose fin — a small, fleshy dorsal lobe situated between the rayed dorsal and the caudal — and the toothed jaws adapted to its varied diet. Sexual dimorphism is not conspicuous in preserved material; field studies report negative allometric growth (a weight-to-length exponent b of approximately 2.83), indicating that individuals become relatively lighter as they grow rather than bulking proportionally.

Habitat

The species has a broad but patchy distribution across central and eastern Brazil. Its range includes the upper Rio Paraná basin (spanning Paraguay and southern Brazil) and several independently draining eastern coastal systems: the Rio São Francisco, Rio Itapicuru, Rio Paraíba, and Rio Itapemirim basins. This cross-drainage distribution, spanning both the Paraná interior and Atlantic-slope rivers, suggests either historical connections between basins or tolerance of a range of habitat types allowing colonisation across watershed divides.

A field study conducted in the Ipanema National Forest within the Atlantic Forest biome of São Paulo state recorded the species in river stretches that were narrower and deeper than the broader, shallower reaches, with substrates of mud and rock. Juvenile fish are primarily herbivorous, feeding on filamentous algae and euglenophytes grazed from submerged rocky and muddy substrates. As individuals grow, animal material — particularly insect fragments — becomes increasingly important, so that larger fish function as omnivores rather than strict herbivores.

This kind of size-dependent dietary shift is common among small characids: juveniles, with their smaller gape and different energetic needs, exploit abundant periphytic algae, while adults can process harder prey and derive more energy per item from invertebrates. The species' preference for narrower, deeper river sections with rocky substrates may be partly tied to periphyton productivity on those surfaces — the rocky substrate that dominates part of its recorded habitat is typically well-colonised by attached algae, providing a reliable food base for the juvenile cohort.

Mating

No dedicated spawning-behaviour studies for Piabina argentea appear in the available literature, and detailed mating observations have not been published. Based on the biology of related small Characidae and the species' ecology as a schooling riverine fish, it almost certainly follows the general characid pattern of egg-scattering with no parental care — the predominant reproductive mode across the family.

In egg-scattering characids, males typically court females with lateral displays and parallel swimming, and spawning occurs in open water or among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or submerged root masses, where adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs become entangled or settle onto the substrate. Spawning in riverine species is often tied to seasonal hydrological cycles — rising water levels in the wet season trigger spawning in many South American characids — though the precise cues for P. argentea remain undocumented.

Breeding

Breeding details specific to Piabina argentea are not documented in the available published or hobbyist literature, and the species is not an established aquarium fish with a body of captive-breeding records. Extrapolating from the characid norm: as an egg-scattering species, it would be expected to produce multiple small, non-adhesive or weakly adhesive eggs per spawning event, deposited among vegetation or over clean substrate, after which both parents depart and offer no further care.

The fry would hatch within a few days at tropical temperatures, absorbing the yolk sac before becoming free-swimming and feeding on microorganisms. Piabina argentea is not a species commonly encountered in the aquarium trade, and there is limited hobbyist literature covering its maintenance. As a small, schooling, benthopelagic characid from Brazilian rivers it would in principle suit a well-planted community aquarium with soft to moderately hard warm water, low to moderate current, and open mid-water swimming space alongside areas of cover near the substrate.

The documented diet — juvenile algae-grazing, adult insect fragment consumption — suggests that providing both a herbivore-friendly prepared food and periodic live or frozen invertebrate items would meet its nutritional range. A group of six or more individuals would be appropriate to satisfy schooling behaviour and reduce individual stress. Given its modest maximum size of around 3 in SL and peaceful nature implied by its ecology, it would be a compatible community fish with other small to medium characids and similarly sized South American species. Data on specific water-parameter tolerances in captivity are sparse.
