Taxonomy & naming
Astyanax schubarti was described by Heraldo A. Britski in 1964 in a contribution published in the Papéis Avulsos do Departamento de Zoologia, based on material from the rio Jaguara-mirim in São Paulo State, Brazil. The type locality places the species squarely in the upper Paraná River basin, where the lineage has its centre of diversity. The name honours a prominent figure associated with the Brazilian ichthyological tradition, following a common practice of patronymic epithets in Neotropical fish descriptions.
For most of its nomenclatural history the species sat within Astyanax, the largest genus of the family Characidae and a notoriously heterogeneous assemblage. A major 2020 revision by Terán, Benitez, and Mirande fragmented Astyanax sensu lato into a series of smaller genera, and under that rearrangement Astyanax schubarti was transferred to Psalidodon as Psalidodon schubarti. The Catalogue of Life currently follows this treatment. However, broad usage in the scientific and hobby literature continues to apply the name Astyanax schubarti, and FishBase retains it under that combination as a primary entry. This article follows Astyanax as the working genus name pending further taxonomic consolidation, consistent with the Catalog of Fishes approach to provisional splits.
Morphology
Astyanax schubarti is a moderately deep-bodied characid with a body depth approximately 2.4–2.5 times in standard length, giving it a slightly stocky silhouette for the genus. Maximum recorded size is 3.5 in (about 3.5 in) standard length, with FishBase citing 3.5 in SL as the maximum. The head is relatively small, fitting approximately 4.1–4.6 times in standard length. The dorsal fin carries 10–11 rays, while the anal fin is notably long with 29–35 rays, a characteristic of many Astyanax-group characids and a useful meristic marker.
Body colouration is a pale yellow to silvery ground with a well-defined dark-brown longitudinal stripe running along the lateral line region, and a distinct humeral spot behind the opercle — the two pigment marks most consistently used to orient these fishes in the field. The caudal peduncle typically shows some concentration of dark pigment. As with most Astyanax, freshly collected and live individuals display more colour contrast than preserved specimens, and there is some intraspecific variation in stripe intensity across the species' range in the upper Paraná.
Habitat
Astyanax schubarti is restricted to the upper Paraná River basin of south-central Brazil, with its type locality in the rio Jaguara-mirim, a tributary of the rio Mogi-Guassu system in São Paulo State. The species occurs across the warm, subtropical lowland and foothill streams and reservoirs of this drainage, where it lives in the water column from near the surface to benthic depths (benthopelagic in FishBase terminology).
The upper Paraná is a broad agricultural and urban landscape; the species has proven adaptable to impounded and modified habitats, including reservoirs such as Barra Bonita on the rio Piracicaba, where it has been the subject of ecological research alongside other small characids. Natural habitat includes clear to turbid streams with moderate to good flow, vegetated margins, and substrates of sand or fine gravel. Water temperatures across the subtropical range are warm but seasonally variable, typically spanning roughly 64–82 °F through the year, with a subtropical winter cooling that may influence breeding seasonality.
Feeding
Astyanax schubarti is an omnivore with a trophic level recorded at 3.1 in FishBase, placing it as a low-level secondary consumer. In common with other small Astyanax-lineage characids, it takes a broad diet including aquatic invertebrates, small crustaceans, insect larvae, fallen terrestrial insects, algae, and fine plant material. The species forages opportunistically throughout the water column and at the surface, exploiting whatever food resources are seasonally and locally available.
Research on sympatric Astyanax and allied characids in Barra Bonita Reservoir and the rio Piracicaba system documents active foraging and seasonal dietary shifts, with invertebrate and algal components varying with flood pulse and reservoir conditions. In the aquarium, as with virtually all Astyanax, it proves entirely undemanding — accepting quality flake and small pellets, frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworm, and blanched vegetable matter. A varied diet promotes good condition.
Mating
Like the great majority of Astyanax-group characids, Astyanax schubarti is an egg-scattering open spawner without parental care. Spawning behaviour follows the standard pattern for the genus: pairs or small groups scatter non-adhesive to slightly adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation, submerged roots, or similar structure, after which both sexes take no further interest in the eggs or larvae.
Sexual dimorphism in this species is subtle. Ripe females become noticeably broader in the abdomen, which is the most reliable field or captive indicator of breeding condition. Males may be slightly slimmer in body profile. Courtship behaviour has not been described in detail in the literature, but is assumed to follow the active, chasing pattern typical of small characids, with spawning occurring at first light or in the early morning hours consistent with most Astyanax studied under aquarium or semi-natural conditions.
Breeding
Astyanax schubarti has high resilience as a species — FishBase records a population doubling time of fewer than 15 months, consistent with early maturity (at around 2.5 in SL) and frequent spawning. In the wild, reproduction in the upper Paraná drainage likely peaks during the warmer rainy season, when rising water temperatures and abundant food trigger spawning activity, as documented for sympatric small characids in reservoir and river studies.
In captivity the species breeds readily under standard characid protocols. Conditioned adults will spawn over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops in a separate breeding tank. Eggs are non-adhesive to slightly adhesive and should be removed from the adults, which will eat them given the opportunity. At temperatures around 75–79 °F, hatching occurs within approximately 24–36 hours, and the fry become free-swimming a few days later. Initial foods are infusoria or commercial fry preparations; newly hatched brine shrimp and finely crushed flake are accepted as the fry grow. The combination of fast maturation, willingness to spawn, and straightforward fry-rearing makes this species an accessible breeding project.
In the aquarium
Astyanax schubarti is a hardy, active schooling fish well suited to a community aquarium of South American character. It should be kept in groups of at least six individuals, which brings out natural schooling behaviour, reduces stress, and allows the subtle differences between sexes to become apparent. A tank of 31.5 in or more in length provides adequate swimming space; the species is an energetic open-water swimmer and appreciates room to move.
Water conditions should reflect the subtropical upper Paraná: temperatures in the range of 64–79 °F suit this species well, and it tolerates the mild winter cooling that comes with an unheated or lightly heated subtropical setup. It is tolerant of a broad pH range and is not demanding about water chemistry, though neutral to slightly acidic, moderately soft water approximates its natural conditions. A well-planted tank with open central swimming space and good filtration is ideal. Tankmates should be similarly sized and active: other small South American tetras, Corydoras, and peaceful cichlids all work. The species is not commonly encountered in the aquarium hobby outside Brazil, but it makes an interesting choice for those seeking native upper Paraná fauna.
Conservation
Astyanax schubarti has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated. The species has no formal conservation designation at the international level, though the upper Paraná River basin — its only known range — is one of the most heavily modified freshwater systems in South America. Large-scale hydroelectric impoundment, intensive agriculture, urban runoff, and the introduction of non-native species have substantially altered the hydrology and ecology of the basin over the past century.
Despite this pressure, Astyanax schubarti appears to be an ecologically resilient species. Its documented population doubling time of under 15 months, early sexual maturity at around 2.5 in, and broad dietary flexibility all suggest it can persist and recover in degraded or impounded habitats of the kind that now characterise much of the upper Paraná. Reservoir populations have been the subject of ecological study, which implies ongoing presence in regulated water bodies. A formal IUCN assessment would help quantify population trends and range changes; until then, the precautionary assumption is that continued habitat modification in the basin warrants monitoring of small characid communities.
