The genus Planaltina was erected to receive this single species, making it monospecific at description. It is placed within the tribe Glandulocaudini (formerly the subfamily Glandulocaudinae), a group of characids distributed across tropical and subtropical South America and characterised in part by specialised caudal glands that play a role in chemical communication and courtship.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid binomial as Planaltina britskii Menezes, Weitzman & Burns, 2003. The type locality is in Brazil. The species is named in honour of Heraldo A. Britski, the eminent Brazilian ichthyologist who has described and revised numerous characiform taxa from South America; the specific epithet britskii is therefore a patronym in the genitive case.
