Planaltina glandipedis is a small, adipose-finless characid from the highland stream basins of São Paulo State, Brazil, reaching barely 1 in in standard length and notable within its genus for being its smallest member. Males bear a conspicuous pelvic-fin gland — the structure that gives the species its name — associated with the family Stevardiidae's broader pattern of chemosensory courtship. The species is restricted to tributaries of the Tietê and Paranapanema river systems draining the interior plateau and is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Planaltina glandipedis was described in 2003 by Naércio A. Menezes, Stanley H. Weitzman, and John R. Burns. The genus Planaltina belongs to the family Characidae and is placed within the subfamily Stevardiinae (historically treated as the family Stevardiidae), a group of South American characids unified in part by specialised male reproductive structures used in courtship. The valid name as recognised by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Planaltina glandipedis Menezes, Weitzman & Burns, 2003.

Within Planaltina the species is distinguished as the smallest member of the genus. It co-occurs with the closely related Planaltina britskii in the Tietê basin, and molecular phylogenetic work has confirmed its position within a clade of plateau-dwelling Stevardiinae. The genus name Planaltina references the Brazilian highland plateau (planalto) from which these fishes come; the epithets within the genus tend to describe structural characters or honour researchers.

Morphology

Adults of Planaltina glandipedis are very small, with females reaching a maximum of approximately 1 in standard length and males slightly smaller at around 1 in SL. The species lacks an adipose fin entirely, a character that at once sets it apart from many other characids and is consistent across the genus. The body is slender and moderately compressed.

The most diagnostically significant external feature in males is the pelvic-fin gland, a fleshy integumentary structure on the pelvic fin from which the species takes its name. Males also bear reproductive hooks on the anal and pelvic fins at maturity; fully developed hooks appear in males from approximately 1 in SL onward. These hooks are widespread in Stevardiinae and are thought to function in close contact during spawning. Colouration in life is not well documented in the primary literature accessible from available sources, but the species is presumed to share the generally translucent to silvery appearance typical of small plateau characids.

Habitat

Planaltina glandipedis is endemic to the Tietê and Paranapanema river basins in São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil. Both are tributaries of the upper Paraná River system. The species inhabits smaller streams draining the elevated interior plateau known as the planalto, including the cuesta (escarpment) zones that define the topographic edge of that plateau.

Stream habitats on the São Paulo plateau tend to be clear to lightly tannin-stained, with cool to warm temperatures depending on season and altitude, moderate current, and substrates of sand, gravel, and leaf litter. The highlands create a degree of natural isolation among stream drainages, and several small characids on the planalto have narrow endemic ranges as a result. No detailed microhabitat data for P. glandipedis were located in available sources.

Feeding

No specific dietary data for Planaltina glandipedis are available in the sources consulted. By analogy with other small Stevardiinae of similar size and habitat, the species is most likely an opportunistic microcarnivore or omnivore, feeding on small invertebrates — microcrustaceans, chironomid larvae, and small surface insects — supplemented by algae and organic detritus.

In captivity, small Stevardiinae are generally maintained on fine-grade prepared foods — micro-pellets, finely crushed flake — augmented with live or frozen foods such as micro-worms, Artemia nauplii, and Daphnia. There is no aquarium husbandry record for this species in the available literature.

Mating

Planaltina glandipedis belongs to a family group (Stevardiinae) known for an unusual reproductive strategy: internal insemination. Males use modified fins — including the pelvic-fin gland present in this species — as part of courtship signalling, likely releasing pheromones that elicit female receptivity. The gland is the source of the species epithet glandipedis (Latin: gland + foot/fin). Close-contact fin hooks in mature males are consistent with a spawning embrace during which sperm transfer occurs.

No direct behavioural observation records for P. glandipedis were located in the sources consulted. In Stevardiinae generally, fertilisation may be internal or the sperm may be stored briefly by the female before eggs are fertilised at spawning. The reproductive hooks suggest close physical contact between male and female at the moment of gamete transfer.

Breeding

No specific captive-breeding data for Planaltina glandipedis were identified in the sources reviewed. The species is not recorded in the mainstream aquarium hobby and appears to remain essentially unknown in cultivation. Based on Stevardiinae biology, eggs would be expected to be adhesive and deposited among fine-leaved plants or submerged vegetation, with no parental care provided by either sex after spawning.

Given the small adult size — under 1 in SL — any breeding attempt would require very fine first foods for larvae and a well-seasoned, small-volume rearing setup. Water conditions mimicking the cool, clear plateau streams of São Paulo State would be the logical starting point. This represents an area where data are sparse and direct observation is needed.

In the aquarium

Planaltina glandipedis is essentially unknown in the ornamental fish trade and is not available through mainstream hobby channels. It is a research and specialist species encountered primarily through scientific collections. For any keeper who obtained specimens, its very small adult size — under 1 in — would necessitate a quiet, fine-filtered nano or small species tank with soft, clean water and ample cover of fine-leaved plants or java moss.

Tankmates would need to be chosen very carefully given the fish's diminutive size; it would almost certainly be outcompeted or intimidated by anything significantly larger. As a highland Brazilian stream fish it is likely to prefer temperatures somewhat cooler than many tropical fish — the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius at most. There is no established husbandry literature for this species.

Conservation

Planaltina glandipedis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (2022.2 assessment). The assessment reflects that no major threats have been recorded at the species level and that it is present across at least two river basins (Tietê and Paranapanema) in São Paulo State. No higher taxa-level threat flags are noted in the IUCN record.

Nevertheless, the species' range is confined to highland stream tributaries of the upper Paraná system in one of Brazil's most heavily developed states. Urbanisation, agricultural run-off, stream channelisation, and water abstraction are pervasive pressures on plateau streams across São Paulo. The long-term security of small endemic stream fishes in this region depends on the health of riparian corridors and the broader management of water quality in the interior drainages. Continued monitoring of the species in both Tietê and Paranapanema populations would be prudent given how little published ecological data exist for it.
