Planaltina kaingang is a small characid from freshwater streams of Brazil, described in 2018 and named in honour of the Kaingang, an indigenous people of southern Brazil. It belongs to the genus Planaltina, a handful of slender, schooling characins from the upper Paraná and adjacent drainages of the Brazilian highlands. Like its congeners it occupies clear, fast-flowing stream habitats and has attracted little attention in the aquarium hobby, remaining a fish known principally from the ichthyological literature.

Planaltina kaingang was formally described in 2018 by Deprá, da Graça, Pavanelli, Avelino & Oliveira. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) is the authority for the valid name. The genus Planaltina was established for small characids from the highland plateau (planalto) drainage systems of central and southern Brazil, and the family-level placement follows the broad Characidae.

The genus Planaltina is characterised by a slender body form, relatively large eyes, and a combination of meristic and coloration features that separate it from the superficially similar hyphessobryconine assemblage. Prior to 2018 only two species were widely recognised in the genus — P. georgiae and P. myersi — and the addition of P. kaingang expanded the group to three, based on material from a previously undescribed population. The species are distinguishable by counts and proportions, though the group as a whole is under-studied and detailed systematic work remains limited in the published literature.

Morphology

Planaltina kaingang is a small, slender characid. Precise published size data are sparse in the available literature, but members of the genus Planaltina are generally small schooling fish, typically not exceeding 1.5–2 in total length. The body is laterally compressed and elongated, consistent with a rheophilic, open-water schooling lifestyle in flowing streams.

Any aquarist fortunate enough to acquire the species should prioritise maintaining a stable group and documenting behaviour, as the published record is thin. Basic small-tetra care — clean, well-oxygenated water, appropriate schooling companions, and a varied diet — represents the starting point in the absence of species-specific data.

The species was described in 2018, and newly described taxa from restricted ranges often have a lag before formal assessment is completed. Given the continued degradation of stream habitats in the Brazilian highlands — through agricultural expansion, deforestation of riparian corridors, water extraction, and pollution from agribusiness — small endemic species in this region face habitat pressure even before their conservation status has been formally evaluated.

The upper Paraná basin and its tributaries support high freshwater fish endemism and are also among the more heavily modified river systems in South America.
