Taxonomy & naming
Priocharax piagassu was described in 2025 by Lopez, Souza, Reia, Mantuaneli, Morales, Lima, Oliveira & Mattox in the journal MDPI Taxonomy, as one of two new miniature tetra species presented in the same contribution. The type locality is in the Rio Purus and Solimões drainages of Amazonas State, Brazil. Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Priocharax piagassu Lopez et al., 2025.
The genus Priocharax was established by Weitzman & Vari in 1987 and currently encompasses approximately twelve described species, all miniature characids of the Amazon and Orinoco basins. Priocharax sits within the family Characidae — the vast American characin family that includes the majority of what aquarists call tetras — and within that family occupies a group characterised by extreme body miniaturisation and associated paedomorphic traits. As a newly described species, P. piagassu has not yet been indexed on FishBase and has received limited treatment in secondary literature.
Morphology
Priocharax piagassu is a true miniature fish. The holotype measures 0.5 in standard length, placing it firmly within the range of some of the smallest vertebrates known. Like other Priocharax, it displays a suite of paedomorphic characters — anatomical features that, in larger characid relatives, are present only in larvae or juveniles but are retained permanently in adults of this genus. These include a reduced and simplified laterosensory system (the lateral line and associated canals are greatly reduced or absent) and, most strikingly, the complete absence of pectoral-fin rays in adults; the pectoral fin either does not develop or remains in a rudimentary state resembling the condition seen in larvae of other species.
Beyond these defining paedomorphic traits, the body form is that of a slender, translucent miniature characid. Precise meristic data for P. piagassu beyond the holotype measurements are not yet widely reported in secondary literature, as the species was only described in 2025.
Habitat
The type locality of Priocharax piagassu falls within the Rio Purus and Solimões drainages of Amazonas State, in the central Amazon basin of Brazil. This is one of the most species-rich freshwater regions on Earth — vast, lowland, seasonally flooded Amazonian whitewater and clearwater systems surrounded by dense tropical forest.
Detailed microhabitat data for P. piagassu specifically have not been published in available sources. By comparison with other Priocharax species, which are typically collected from shallow, heavily vegetated marginal areas, flooded forest floors, or leaf-litter beds in slow or still water, P. piagassu likely inhabits similar sheltered microhabitats offering protection from larger predators. The central Amazon drainages where it was collected experience pronounced seasonal flood pulses that dramatically alter available habitat between wet and dry seasons.
Feeding
No specific dietary studies have been published for Priocharax piagassu. At 0.5 in total body length, the fish's gape and energy requirements strongly constrain it to microscopic or near-microscopic prey. Other miniature Amazonian tetras of comparable size are documented feeding on small zooplankton, microcrustaceans, tiny insect larvae, and organic detritus in the water column and at the substrate surface.
The reduced laterosensory system characteristic of Priocharax may affect prey detection, potentially favouring prey located visually rather than by hydrodynamic cues. Given the species' small size and tropical Amazonian habitat, small microinvertebrates and nauplii-sized zooplankton are the most plausible dietary components, but this remains to be confirmed by direct gut-content analysis.
Mating
No mating observations have been published for Priocharax piagassu. Based on the reproductive biology of related miniature tetras and of Characidae broadly, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering open spawner. Characid reproduction typically involves no pair bond formation and no parental care; adults scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants, leaf litter, or other substrate, then leave them to develop independently.
The paedomorphic features of Priocharax — including the retained larval pectoral morphology — do not appear to extend to reproductive anatomy, and closely related miniature characids are known to spawn in a manner consistent with the family norm. Whether P. piagassu has any courtship displays specific to the genus remains undocumented.
Breeding
Priocharax piagassu has not been documented breeding in captivity in any available source. As a species only described in 2025, it is not currently represented in the aquarium trade, and no husbandry records exist. Should it become available, breeding attempts would likely follow the approach used for other miniature tetras: a species tank or dense-planted breeding setup, very soft and slightly acidic to neutral water at warm tropical temperatures, with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops as egg-deposition substrate and prompt removal of adults after spawning to prevent egg predation.
The very small adult size would necessitate appropriately scaled food for fry — infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods as a first food, followed by rotifers and nauplii as the fish grow. The absence of pectoral rays, if it affects swimming mechanics, could be relevant to husbandry, but this has not been studied.
In the aquarium
Priocharax piagassu is not established in the aquarium trade as of its 2025 description and is unlikely to be encountered by hobbyists in the near term. Its extreme small size — adult standard length under 0.5 in — would place it among the most diminutive fish that could be kept in an aquarium, comparable to Paedocypris or Boraras species, and it would be suitable only for nano or micro-aquaria with no tankmates capable of predating it.
If it were to become available through specialist breeders or research institutions, it would require a well-matured, heavily planted nano tank with extremely gentle flow, a tight-fitting lid (small fish escape easily), and a diet of live or frozen micro-foods. Water chemistry modelled on the central Amazon would mean soft, warm, slightly acidic to neutral water. At this stage, P. piagassu remains a subject of scientific interest rather than a practical aquarium fish.
Conservation
Priocharax piagassu has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List, having been described only in 2025. Its conservation status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE). The species is known from the Rio Purus and Solimões drainages — large Amazonian river systems that, while subject to increasing deforestation, agricultural expansion, and hydropower development pressures across the broader basin, retain substantial areas of intact habitat in their upper and middle reaches.
Miniature fish like Priocharax are inherently difficult to survey — they are easily missed in standard collecting efforts and are underrepresented in museum collections relative to their likely actual diversity. It is probable that P. piagassu is more widely distributed within appropriate microhabitats of the central Amazon than its current records suggest, but this will require targeted sampling to confirm. Whether the species faces any immediate conservation threat cannot be assessed without better distributional data. The 2025 description underscores that the Amazonian ichthyofauna continues to yield new species, highlighting the importance of ongoing research and habitat protection in the region.
