Taxonomy & naming
Priocharax robbiei was described in 2025 by Lopez, Souza, Reia, Mantuaneli, Morales, Lima, Oliveira and Mattox, a multi-author team working on miniaturised characiform fishes from Amazonian Brazil. The type material was collected from the Rio Purus and Rio Solimões drainage systems in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid name.
The genus Priocharax is one of several genera of extremely small-bodied characiforms from South American lowland river systems, particularly the Amazon and Orinoco basins. At the time of P. robbiei's description the genus contained approximately a dozen recognised species, with ongoing taxonomic work continuing to reveal new diversity among the miniaturised fauna of Amazonian stream and floodplain habitats. Family-level placement of Priocharax has been subject to revision as molecular phylogenetic studies have reappraised the boundaries of traditionally recognised characid lineages.
The specific epithet robbiei is a patronym. FishBase records the species as named for Roberto Mattox Jr., presumably recognising contributions to the study of this group of miniature fishes.
Morphology
Priocharax robbiei is an extremely small fish, with a maximum recorded standard length of 0.5 in. This places it among the smallest known characiform fishes and within the typical size range of the genus Priocharax. Like other members of the genus, it displays osteological simplifications associated with miniaturisation: the claustrum (a small ossification in the Weberian apparatus) is absent, only two postcleithra are present rather than the three found in many characiforms, and the adipose fin is absent.
Meristic data from FishBase indicate 7–9 dorsal soft rays, 20–28 anal soft rays, and a vertebral count of 32–34. The relatively high anal ray count for such a tiny fish is a characteristic feature of the genus. Overall body shape is presumably similar to congeners — a slender, translucent or lightly pigmented fish of the kind typical of miniaturised Amazonian characins — though detailed morphological description awaits publication of the full species account.
Habitat
The known distribution of Priocharax robbiei is restricted to the Rio Purus and Rio Solimões drainage systems in Amazonas state, Brazil. These are major lowland Amazonian river systems characterised by extensive floodplains, blackwater and whitewater tributaries, and complex seasonally inundated habitats. FishBase categorises the species as benthopelagic in tropical freshwater.
The microhabitat preferences of P. robbiei are not yet documented in detail. Congeners in the genus Priocharax are typically associated with leaf litter, marginal vegetation, or shallow stream environments within the broader Amazonian and Orinocan drainage networks. The ecological tolerances of the species — temperature range, pH preferences, dissolved oxygen requirements — await study; the water chemistry of the Rio Purus system is generally soft and acidic to neutral, typical of Amazonian blackwater and mixed-water environments.
Feeding
FishBase assigns Priocharax robbiei a trophic level of 3.0, placing it in the omnivore-to-generalist insectivore range typical of small characiforms. Natural dietary items have not been specifically described for this species.
By analogy with other miniaturised characiforms of similar size and habitat, the diet likely consists of small invertebrates — microcrustaceans, midge larvae, small aquatic insects, and possibly algal or detrital material. At 0.5 in maximum length, prey items are necessarily minute, and the species presumably feeds on the micro-fauna associated with leaf litter, fine substrate, or the water column of its stream and floodplain habitats. Specific gut-content studies have not yet been published.
Mating
No information on the mating behaviour of Priocharax robbiei has been published. Based on the general biology of characiform fishes at this body size, the species is assumed to be an egg-scattering spawner with no parental care, likely depositing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation, leaf litter, or fine substrate.
Small-bodied characiforms in Amazonian lowland systems often show opportunistic or seasonally cued spawning associated with floodplain inundation cycles. Whether P. robbiei follows such a pattern, or spawns continuously in the manner of some permanently aquatic miniatures, is unknown. No observations from captivity have been reported in the literature or hobby literature at this time.
Breeding
Priocharax robbiei has not been bred in captivity and no breeding accounts exist in the published or hobbyist literature. Given the species was described only in 2025 and has an extremely restricted known range, it is unlikely to have entered the aquarium trade in any numbers.
Breeding biology can only be inferred from the genus and family context. Characiform fishes of this size class are typically egg scatterers that deposit small, adhesive eggs among vegetation or substrate, with incubation periods of several days at tropical temperatures and no parental investment beyond the spawning act itself. Fry would be expected to be very small at hatching, consistent with the tiny adult size, and would require correspondingly minute first foods. Until captive maintenance is established and documented, all breeding information for this species remains speculative.
In the aquarium
Priocharax robbiei is not currently available in the aquarium trade. As a newly described species known only from remote Amazonian drainages and measuring no more than 0.5 in, it has not been collected for the ornamental fish industry and there are no published accounts of its maintenance in captivity.
For aquarists who encounter the genus Priocharax, the general requirements for miniaturised Amazonian characiforms apply: stable, soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, subdued lighting, gentle filtration, and appropriately sized micro-foods. Species of this size are best kept in a species-only or very carefully curated nano aquarium, as they will be outcompeted or consumed by even modestly larger tank inhabitants. Any future husbandry information will depend on the species being collected and maintained by specialist researchers or advanced hobbyists with access to the appropriate habitat.
Conservation
Priocharax robbiei has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. As a species described in 2025, it falls within the typical lag period between a new species description and formal conservation evaluation. Its status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE).
The restricted known distribution — confined to the Rio Purus and Solimões drainages of Amazonas, Brazil — combined with very small body size and presumably limited dispersal capacity suggests that localised habitat degradation could pose a threat, though the overall extent of these river systems is large. The Amazon basin as a whole faces ongoing pressures from deforestation, floodplain alteration, and water pollution, all of which have the potential to affect the benthic and shallow-water micro-fauna. A formal range survey and population assessment will be needed before any conservation status can be assigned.
