At barely 0.5 in standard length, Priocharax toledopizae is among the smallest vertebrates in South America, a miniature characid discovered in the blackwater streams of the Rio Moa system in Acre, Brazil, and formally described in 2023. Named in honour of ichthyologist Heraldo Antunes Britski and associated with the broader genus Priocharax — a handful of Amazonian microcharacids defined by a suite of skeletal characters rarely visible to the naked eye — it adds to a group of fishes that test the lower limits of vertebrate body size and reveal how much diversity the Amazon still conceals.

Priocharax toledopizae was described by Mattox, Britz, Souza, Casas, Lima & Oliveira in 2023, in the Canadian Journal of Zoology, based on material collected from streams of the lower Rio Moa drainage in the state of Acre, Brazil. The type locality falls within the Rio Juruá basin of the western Amazon. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Priocharax toledopizae Mattox, Britz, Souza, Casas, Lima & Oliveira, 2023.

The genus Priocharax belongs to a clade of miniaturised characids within the family Characidae. Members of this genus are distinguished from other small Amazonian tetras by a combination of skeletal features: the presence of a claustrum, the presence of infraorbitals 1 and 2, and the absence of infraorbital 3, together with five branched pelvic-fin rays. These are internal, osteological characters rather than easily visible external traits, which is why members of Priocharax were long overlooked and why new species continue to emerge as skeletal work is applied to museum material and fresh collections from poorly surveyed drainages.

The specific epithet toledopizae honours a person connected to the original describers' institutional circle; the name follows standard Latin genitive formation for a feminine honorand.

Morphology

Priocharax toledopizae reaches a maximum recorded size of 0.5 in standard length, placing it among the smallest known characids. Like its congener P. marupiara, which reaches about 0.5 in SL, it is a genuinely miniature fish rather than a juvenile of a larger species. The body is described as deep and robust relative to its length, an unusual proportion for such a tiny fish and a character that aids identification against sympatric microcharacids with more slender or fusiform profiles.

The diagnostic skeletal characters — claustrum present, infraorbitals 1 and 2 present, infraorbital 3 absent, five branched pelvic-fin rays — cannot be assessed in live fish without radiography or clearing-and-staining preparation. External coloration in Priocharax species is typically pale and translucent, as in most miniature Amazonian tetras, with the internal organs and gas bladder visible through the skin. Precise fin-ray and scale counts for P. toledopizae are recorded in the original description.

Sexual dimorphism has been documented in the pelvic girdle and pedicel region of males, a structural modification similar to that reported in other Priocharax species. This bony modification is presumably associated with a reproductive behaviour, though its exact function has not been described in the literature available to date.

Habitat

Priocharax toledopizae is known from streams draining into the lower Rio Moa, a tributary of the upper Rio Juruá, in the state of Acre in the Brazilian Amazon. The Rio Juruá system drains the western Amazon basin, a region characterised by white-water and blackwater streams interspersed across lowland floodplain and upland terra firme forest. The closely related P. marupiara is also a Rio Juruá endemic, suggesting the genus has at least a partial centre of diversity in this drainage.

Based on the habitat associations of congeners and the general ecology of blackwater stream fish in the western Amazon, P. toledopizae likely inhabits small, shallow, forest-shaded streams with soft, acidic, dark-stained water, leaf litter accumulations, and submerged root masses. These streams typically carry very low conductivity, low pH, and negligible hardness. Feeding

No specific dietary data for Priocharax toledopizae are published in the sources available. Some miniature characids also consume microalgae, detritus, and protists when invertebrate prey is scarce.

In the aquarium, a fish of this size would require appropriately small live or frozen foods: newly hatched brine shrimp, Moina, Cyclops, and fine-grade powdered or liquid prepared foods. Given the species' extreme miniaturisation, paramecia and rotifers may be needed even for adults.

Mating

No direct observations of spawning behaviour in Priocharax toledopizae have been published. Characids of this size are generally assumed to be egg-scatterers that deposit small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over leaf litter, with no parental care. The documented sexual dimorphism in the male pelvic girdle and pedicel — a bony modification observed in P. toledopizae and other Priocharax species — indicates that males adopt a specific posture or mechanical role during spawning, possibly gripping the female or a substrate during egg release, though the precise behaviour remains undescribed.

In the aquarium, spawning in miniature characids of comparable size is rarely observed and rarely attempted, given the difficulty of keeping the adults alive and well-fed at all.

Breeding

Priocharax toledopizae has not been bred in captivity as far as available records show. As a newly described species known primarily from museum specimens and field-collected type material, no husbandry or captive-breeding information exists in the published or hobbyist literature. Given the species' extreme small size, sensitivity to water quality, and requirement for micro-sized live foods, captive breeding would represent a significant technical challenge.

For context, no Priocharax species appears to have been maintained or bred in the aquarium hobby at the time of this writing. The egg-scattering open spawning mode with adhesive eggs and no parental care — standard for most characids — is the most likely breeding strategy, consistent with the group's position within Characidae, but must be treated as inference until direct observation confirms it.

In the aquarium

Priocharax toledopizae is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. No hobbyist care profile exists, no trade specimens have been reported, and the species is known only from scientific collections. Its extreme small size (under 0.5 in), likely sensitivity to water-quality fluctuation, and dependence on microinvertebrate foods would make it genuinely challenging to maintain even for experienced keepers of nano and microfish.

For aquarists drawn to the Priocharax group from a scientific curiosity perspective: the ecological analogues in the hobby are other western-Amazon blackwater microtetras, kept in mature, heavily planted nano aquaria with very soft, acidic water and dense live-food cultures. Such setups are more about naturalistic husbandry than display. The species is not in trade and should not be sought for collection given its restricted range and unknown population status.

Conservation

Priocharax toledopizae has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. Described only in 2023, the species is too recently recognised to have undergone formal conservation evaluation. The broader context gives reason for watchfulness: the species is known from a restricted drainage in the upper Rio Juruá basin of Acre, Brazil, a region subject to ongoing deforestation, agricultural expansion, and changes in hydrology associated with Amazonian land-use change.

The closely related P. marupiara, also a Rio Juruá endemic, is listed as Data Deficient by the IUCN, reflecting how little is known about population size and trends in miniature Amazonian characids that rarely appear in standard survey collections. The restricted range of P. toledopizae and the general fragility of small blackwater stream ecosystems to catchment disturbance suggest that formal assessment would be valuable. At present, the population status and any specific threats are undocumented.
