Priocharax varii is a miniature characid from the Rio Jamari drainage of Rondônia, Brazil, reaching just 0.5 in standard length and belonging to a genus of pygmy Amazonian characins remarkable for their diminutive size and delicate morphology. Described in 2020, it is distinguished from its congeners by the possession of an adipose fin — unique within Priocharax — along with a fully toothed maxilla, two postcleithra, and a persistent larval-type pectoral fin. The species inhabits slow-flowing, vegetated tributaries of the Rio Madeira system and has not been formally assessed by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Priocharax varii was described in 2020 by Mattox, Souza, Toledo-Piza, Britz & Oliveira in a paper published in Vertebrate Zoology. The holotype (MZUSP 125786, 0.5 in SL) was collected from a small tributary of the Rio Jamari, a right-bank tributary of the Rio Madeira in Rondônia, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.

The genus Priocharax belongs to the family Characidae and comprises a small number of miniature Amazonian species. Priocharax varii is diagnosed from its congeners P. ariel and P. pygmaeus by several features: it alone bears an adipose fin within the genus, it has i,6 pelvic-fin rays (versus i,5 in the other two species), and it retains two postcleithra that are absent in congeners. The larval pectoral fin remains conspicuous in adults, and the maxilla is fully toothed — characters that together place the species in a distinct morphological bracket within Priocharax.

The species epithet honours the American ichthyologist Richard P. Vari, a leading authority on Neotropical fishes and a major contributor to the understanding of characiform diversity.

Morphology

Priocharax varii is a true miniature fish, with a maximum recorded size of 0.5 in standard length (male/unsexed) — placing it among the smallest known characids. The body is translucent, as is typical of minaturised Amazonian species, and gives the fish an almost ghostly appearance in life.

Key meristic data from the original description include 9 dorsal soft rays, 18–25 anal soft rays, and a vertebral count of 33. The adipose fin, present in P. varii but absent in all other described Priocharax species, is a defining diagnostic character. A triangular pseudotympanum is situated anterior to the fifth vertebra. The persistent larval-type pectoral fin is visible in adults, a paedomorphic feature that is among the characters used to diagnose the species from its congeners.

Habitat

The type locality is a small, slow-flowing tributary of the Rio Jamari, collected in a vegetated area near submerged macrophytes approximately 200 metres above a set of rapids. The Rio Jamari drains into the Rio Madeira system in Rondônia, Brazil — part of the broader Amazon basin.

The Madeira basin in this region is characterised by high seasonal water-level variation, with the river rising as much as 21 metres between the February–April peak and the September–November low. Regional water chemistry is broadly near-neutral in pH with good dissolved oxygen levels, reflecting a mixed white- and clearwater regime. The vegetated, slow-flowing microhabitat of P. varii — with abundant submerged macrophytes and reduced current — likely buffers the species from the extremes of the main-channel flood pulse and provides the food resources and shelter needed by so small a fish.

Feeding

Specific gut-content or foraging studies for Priocharax varii have not been published. FishBase assigns the species a trophic level of 3.0 ± 0.4, consistent with omnivorous or detritivorous feeding — a common finding in small-bodied, vegetated-habitat characids that browse fine organic matter, microinvertebrates, and algae from submerged surfaces.

Given the species' extreme small size and its association with dense macrophyte beds, the diet likely centres on tiny invertebrates — ostracods, microcrustaceans, small dipteran larvae — along with organic detritus and perhaps unicellular algae. No captive feeding observations have been published.

Mating

No specific mating observations have been published for Priocharax varii. As a member of Characidae the species is presumed to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care, following the reproductive pattern typical of small characins. The association with dense submerged macrophytes at the type locality suggests that spawning, if similar to related minaturised characids, would occur among fine-leaved aquatic plants where adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs could settle among vegetation and detritus.

No captive breeding records or descriptions of courtship behaviour are currently available in the published literature.

Breeding

Priocharax varii has not been reported in the aquarium hobby and no captive breeding accounts exist in the published literature. The species was described only in 2020 and, as a tiny, highly specialised Amazonian endemic collected from a single locality, it has not entered the ornamental trade to any documented degree.

By analogy with other minaturised characids that have been bred in captivity, breeding in Priocharax would be expected to involve egg-scattering among fine-leaved plants with no parental care, producing small adhesive eggs and requiring very small first foods such as infusoria or rotifers for the fry. These remain inferences; no breeding data are currently available.

In the aquarium

Priocharax varii is not established in the aquarium hobby. No specimens appear to have entered the ornamental trade, and the species has not been kept or bred in captivity to any documented extent as of the date of description. Its extreme small size (under 0.5 in), restricted natural range, and the fact that the type locality is a poorly accessible tributary in the Brazilian Amazon mean that it is unlikely to become a mainstream aquarium subject.

For any future keeper, the requirements of a translucent 0.5 in characid from vegetated Amazonian streams would likely include a heavily planted nano aquarium with very gentle flow, soft and slightly acidic to near-neutral water reflecting the Madeira basin chemistry, and live microfoods. The species would be best maintained in a species-only setup or with other similarly miniature, non-competitive fish.

Conservation

Priocharax varii has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. The species was described in 2020 and is known from a single locality — a small tributary of the Rio Jamari in Rondônia, Brazil — making its range one of the most restricted of any described Priocharax. As a newly described, geographically confined Amazonian endemic, a formal IUCN assessment may be pending.

The broader Madeira basin faces ongoing pressures from hydroelectric development, deforestation, and agriculture in Rondônia, one of the most heavily deforested states of the Brazilian Amazon. Small-stream endemics dependent on intact riparian vegetation and slow-flowing, macrophyte-rich microhabitats are among the taxa most vulnerable to these land-use changes. Without a formal assessment, the conservation standing of P. varii remains undetermined, but its highly restricted known distribution warrants attention.
