Taxonomy & naming
Pyrrhulina maxima was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Rosa Smith Eigenmann in 1889. The genus Pyrrhulina is placed in the family Lebiasinidae, an exclusively South American family that also contains the closely related pencilfishes (Nannostomus) and the splashing tetras (Copella, Copeina). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises Pyrrhulina maxima Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889 as a valid species, and the authority remains un-parenthesised because the species has not been moved from its original genus since its description.
Pyrrhulina is a moderately species-rich genus distributed broadly across tropical South America, with representatives in the Amazon, Orinoco, and Atlantic coastal basins. The genus is characterised by elongated, fusiform bodies, an upturned mouth suited to surface feeding, a single dorsal fin set well back on the body, and a tendency toward surface-water microhabitats in slow or still reaches. P. maxima is among the larger members of the genus, and its specific epithet directly flags that fact.
Morphology
Pyrrhulina maxima is an elongate, fusiform lebiasinid with a noticeably large size for its genus. Its body plan is typical of Pyrrhulina: a cylindrical to slightly laterally compressed trunk, a strongly upturned mouth angled toward the surface, a single dorsal fin placed at roughly mid-body or slightly behind, and an adipose fin. The caudal fin is forked. Overall ground coloration is typically a warm brown to olive-tan on the dorsal surface, fading to silver or cream on the flanks, with variable dark lateral striping or spotting depending on population and condition.
As with most Pyrrhulina, sexual dimorphism is present but subtle outside of spawning condition. Males in breeding dress may develop deeper or more saturated flank colours and may show reddening of the fins. Females are typically deeper-bodied when gravid, which is the most reliable distinguishing feature at a glance. The species shares the surface-orientation posture common to the genus, often resting at an upward tilt near the waterline.
Habitat
Pyrrhulina maxima occupies forest streams, creek margins, and backwater pools of tropical South America, favouring slow-flowing to still reaches with overhanging or marginal vegetation. Like most Lebiasinidae, it is associated with the soft, acidic, low-conductivity blackwater and clearwater drainages of the Amazon basin and adjacent systems, where fallen leaves, submerged roots, and the dappled cover of gallery forest define the microhabitat.
Water conditions in these environments typically run pH 5.5 to 7.5, with soft water and temperatures in the range of roughly 73–82 °F — parameters consistent with the broader family's requirements documented for related species and the general Lebiasinidae literature. The species is most at home in the uppermost water column; it inhabits the surface film zone where insects fall and where it can rise quickly to take prey from or just below the waterline.
Feeding
Pyrrhulina maxima is an omnivore with a strong bias toward surface and near-surface prey. In the wild, the diet centres on small terrestrial and aquatic insects that land on or just beneath the water surface, supplemented by aquatic invertebrates, small crustaceans, and opportunistic plant or biofilm material. The upturned mouth is a direct adaptation to taking food from the surface film.
In the aquarium, the species readily accepts a varied diet. Small floating flake, micro-pellets, and freeze-dried or frozen foods such as bloodworm, Daphnia, and brine shrimp are taken well. Live prey items — small flies, fruit flies, or aquatic worms offered at the surface — are especially relished and can bring fish into peak condition for breeding. Because the species feeds primarily at the surface, sinking foods are less efficient; surface-feeding or floating preparations suit it best.
Mating
Pyrrhulina maxima follows the general reproductive pattern seen across Lebiasinidae: open egg-deposition with adhesive eggs placed on a substrate near the water surface, with no prolonged parental guarding of the kind seen in mouthbrooders. Males become more territorial and display with intensified fin-spreading and colour during the breeding season or when conditioning is good in captivity.
In congeners such as P. filamentosa, males guard egg clutches laid on emergent leaves or other surfaces near the waterline, a behaviour shared by several Pyrrhulina species and likely present in P. maxima as well. Courtship involves pursuit and lateral displays by the male. As with related species, spawning may be induced by a partial water change with slightly cooler, softer water to simulate the onset of the rainy season.
Breeding
Breeding Pyrrhulina maxima in captivity follows the open-spawning pattern common to the genus. The female deposits adhesive eggs on a hard surface near the water surface — in nature typically a broad leaf, a stone, or woody debris just at or above the waterline; in captivity, broad-leaved floating plants, strips of spawning slate, or even the aquarium glass just below the waterline may be used as oviposition sites. Clutch sizes for Pyrrhulina species are typically modest.
After spawning, the male may remain near the clutch in a light guarding capacity, as documented in related Pyrrhulina species, but parental investment is limited and the eggs and fry should be separated to a rearing vessel to avoid predation by the adults. Eggs hatch within a few days at typical tropical temperatures. Fry are small at first and require fine first foods — infusoria, micro-worms, or commercial liquid fry food — before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Growth to juvenile size is relatively quick under warm, clean conditions.
In the aquarium
Pyrrhulina maxima is an undemanding aquarium fish for the keeper who understands its requirements. It is best maintained in a species-focused or soft-water community setup that can accommodate its surface-orientation: a tank with adequate surface area, gentle filtration to avoid strong turbulence at the waterline, and a tight-fitting lid (Pyrrhulina are capable jumpers, and any surface-feeding characoid should be considered an escape risk). A group of six or more individuals will show more natural behaviour and reduce any skittishness.
Water chemistry should reflect the species' blackwater origins: soft, slightly to moderately acidic water (pH around 6.0 to 7.0) in the range of 75–82 °F suits it well. Tannin-stained water from peat filtration or dried Indian almond leaves is appreciated and may encourage spawning. Subdued lighting, floating plants, and surface cover create a naturalistic environment. Tankmates should be peaceful, similarly sized, and not so boisterous as to outcompete the Pyrrhulina at the surface. Pencilfish, small corydoras, and other quiet Amazonian species are suitable companions. Availability is intermittent in the specialist trade; the species is rarely encountered in general aquarium shops.
Conservation
Pyrrhulina maxima has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of the most recent data available; no dedicated assessment appears in the IUCN database. The species is accordingly treated as Not Evaluated (NE). Without a formal assessment, the population trajectory and precise extent of occurrence cannot be stated with confidence.
As a Lebiasinidae of Amazonian forest streams, P. maxima is subject to the broad-scale pressures affecting lowland tropical freshwater fish throughout its range: deforestation, sedimentation, and the modification of small watercourses. It is not a target species of major commercial collection. Its intermittent appearance in specialist circles suggests a fish that is uncommon in trade rather than actively rare in nature, but the absence of formal monitoring means its status remains uncertain. Conserving the riparian and gallery forests that define its habitat is the primary safeguard for this and hundreds of other small characoids.
