Taxonomy & naming
Pyrrhulina australis was described by Carl H. Eigenmann and Charles H. Kennedy in 1903. The genus Pyrrhulina belongs to the family Lebiasinidae, the pencilfishes and their allies, which forms part of the broader Characiformes order. Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Pyrrhulina australis Eigenmann & Kennedy, 1903.
The genus Pyrrhulina was established by Valenciennes in 1846 and currently contains around a dozen recognised species distributed across tropical South America. The species sits within the subfamily Pyrrhulininae, whose members are characterised by a surface-oriented lifestyle, a small upturned mouth adapted for taking prey from or just below the water surface, and the absence of the adipose fin that typifies many other characiforms. The specific epithet australis is Latin for 'southern', reflecting the species' distribution in the southern Amazon drainage relative to congeners known from further north.
Morphology
Pyrrhulina australis is a slender, moderately elongate fish reaching a maximum recorded length of 6 in standard length, making it one of the larger Pyrrhulina species. Like other members of the genus it carries the lebiasinid body plan: a fairly cylindrical anterior body, a laterally compressed rear, and a small upturned mouth suited to surface feeding. The dorsal fin is set well back along the body, and the lack of an adipose fin is characteristic of the Pyrrhulininae.
The body is typically silvery to pale brownish with a dark lateral stripe or series of dark markings running from the snout to the caudal peduncle, and the fins may show orange or reddish tints in well-conditioned individuals, particularly in males. The overall impression is of a slender, alert fish that holds itself near the water surface. As with most Pyrrhulina, sexual differences are subtle in juveniles but adult males tend to be more intensely coloured during breeding condition.
Habitat
Pyrrhulina australis is distributed across the Amazon River basin of South America. It is a freshwater species occupying benthopelagic and near-surface positions in slow-moving or standing waters: flooded margins, forest streams, backwaters, and oxbow lakes where overhanging or floating vegetation provides cover and a ready supply of terrestrial invertebrates.
Like other Pyrrhulininae, it is associated with shallow, often vegetated habitats where the surface film is accessible and insect fall is reliable. Waters across much of the Amazon basin where lebiasinids occur tend to be soft and slightly acidic, though the species has a broad Amazonian distribution and encounters a range of local conditions. It is a surface-oriented fish and in nature is rarely found far from cover that it can retreat to when alarmed.
Feeding
Pyrrhulina australis is a micropredator specialising in small invertebrates taken at or just below the water surface. In the wild the diet consists principally of aquatic and terrestrial insects, small crustaceans, and other tiny invertebrates that land on or drift near the surface film. The upturned mouth and surface-oriented posture are direct adaptations to this feeding niche.
In the aquarium the species readily accepts a range of appropriately sized foods. Live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, small bloodworm, and fruit flies (Drosophila) are eagerly taken. It will also eat small floating dry foods — flake and micro-pellets — provided they are small enough to fit the mouth. A varied diet with a real invertebrate component produces better colour and breeding condition than a dry-food-only regimen. Feeding at or near the surface is most natural; sinking foods may be ignored.
Mating
Pyrrhulina australis, like other members of the genus, is a substrate-spawning rather than egg-scattering species — an unusual trait within the broader tetra and characiform assemblage. Males establish and defend a small spawning territory, typically on a broad leaf, a flat stone, or a patch of plant stem near or at the water surface. Courtship involves the male displaying to the female with spread fins and intensified colours, and rival males are actively excluded from the territory.
The pair spawns by depositing eggs in small clutches directly onto the chosen substrate. The male's territorial behaviour is pronounced during this period, and in a mixed group dominant males can be persistent in chasing other fish from the spawning site. The species is not a continuous open-water spawner; spawning is tied to the defended site, and the male remains to guard it after the female has completed her role.
Breeding
Following spawning, the male Pyrrhulina australis guards the adhesive egg cluster on the chosen substrate and fans the eggs with his fins to maintain oxygenation — a level of parental investment uncommon in small characiforms. The female takes no part in egg care and may be driven off by the attending male. The eggs are relatively small and hatch within a few days at typical tropical temperatures.
The newly hatched larvae are tiny and initially hang from the substrate or rest near the surface. First foods must be very small: infusoria or commercial liquid fry food until the fry are large enough to take freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. The male's guarding behaviour continues for several days after hatching, though by the time the fry are free-swimming his protective role diminishes. In a species tank or a well-planted aquarium with surface cover, brood survival is higher; in a community tank with active or larger tankmates, the small fry are at significant risk.
In the aquarium
Pyrrhulina australis is an interesting and rewarding species for aquarists comfortable with smaller, specialist fish. Its surface orientation and active behaviour make it an attractive upper-level inhabitant of a species tank or a quiet community. A tank of 31.5 in or more in length suits a small group, with a well-fitted lid essential — like other lebiasinids it is an accomplished jumper, particularly when startled.
The species does best in soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water in the mid-20s Celsius, reflecting its Amazonian origins, though it tolerates a reasonable range of conditions once established. A densely planted aquarium with floating plants or surface cover is ideal, both for the fish's security and to create the shaded, leaf-litter aesthetic of its natural habitat. Tankmates should be peaceful and of similar or smaller size; robust or boisterous fish will stress it. A species-only setup, or a gentle community with other small Amazonian fish such as small tetras and Corydoras, suits it best. It is not commonly seen in the trade but is occasionally available from specialist importers and hobbyist breeders.
Conservation
Pyrrhulina australis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dating to 2006. The broad distribution of the species across the Amazon basin, combined with the absence of evidence for rapid population decline or specific acute threats at the time of assessment, underpins this status.
The Amazon basin remains under pressure from deforestation, agricultural encroachment, water pollution, and hydrological alteration, and these broad threats affect the habitats of many lowland Amazonian species. Pyrrhulina australis has not been subject to targeted reassessment recently, and the 2006 evaluation may not fully reflect more recent habitat changes in parts of its range. It is not a commercially important species in the food trade, and collection pressure for the ornamental trade is low. As with many small Amazonian characiforms, its conservation status is best understood as provisionally stable rather than definitively secure.
