Pyrrhulina brevis is a slender, surface-oriented micropredator from the upper and central Amazon basin — a small but sprightly fish whose males flush orange across the fins and develop cherry-red body spots when competing for mates or territory. It belongs to the family Lebiasinidae, a lineage of characiform fishes more closely allied to the pencilfishes than to the true tetras, and inhabits the forest streams, minor tributaries, and seasonally flooded forests of Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Bolivia. Unassuming in size yet animated in behaviour, it has earned a modest following among biotope and species aquarists who appreciate its understated intensity.

Taxonomy & naming

Pyrrhulina brevis was described by Franz Steindachner in 1876 in his contributions to the knowledge of the characins of the Amazon River. The type locality lies within the upper or central Amazonian region; Steindachner's original account drew on specimens from that drainage. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name; the combination Pyrrhulina brevis Steindachner, 1876 remains accepted, with the authority unparenthesised as the species has not been moved from the original genus.

The genus Pyrrhulina belongs to the family Lebiasinidae, which also encompasses the pencilfishes (Nannostomus, Nannobrycon) and the splash tetras (Copella, Copeina). Lebiasinids differ from the bulk of the family Characidae in several anatomical details and are considered a distinct lineage within Characiformes. Pyrrhulina itself comprises a group of small, elongate, surface-skimming fishes distributed broadly across tropical South America. The specific epithet brevis is Latin for 'short' or 'brief', likely referring to the relatively compact body form compared with some of its longer-bodied congeners.

Historically, erroneous distribution records placed Pyrrhulina brevis in Argentina; Zarske and Géry's 2004 revision corrected this, confirming that Argentine records belong to separate taxa and that P. brevis is a northern and central Amazonian species ranging across Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Bolivia.

Morphology

Pyrrhulina brevis is a slender, cigar-shaped fish with a slightly dorsoventrally flattened head and an upturned, superior mouth — adaptations that betray its life at or near the water surface. Published size data vary modestly across sources: FishBase notes a maximum of 3 in standard length, while hobbyist accounts more typically report 2–2.5 in, and some trade sources record up to 3 in. The discrepancy likely reflects the difference between the largest documented specimens and typical aquarium or trade size.

The base coloration is a warm tan to brownish-gold with a dark lateral stripe running from behind the eye toward the caudal peduncle. Males in breeding condition develop vivid orange to reddish-orange unpaired fins, and a scattering of small, bright cherry-red or orange spots appears on the flanks. Outside breeding condition both sexes are considerably plainer. Females tend to be slightly deeper-bodied and lack the intense fin coloration of a displaying male. The caudal fin is forked, and the dorsal fin sits well back on the body, giving the fish a characteristic silhouette.

Habitat

Pyrrhulina brevis inhabits the upper and central Amazon basin and connected drainages, with confirmed distribution across Brazil (including the Rio Negro drainage and the Manaus/Barra Mansa region), Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Bolivia. Within this range it occupies forest streams, small tributaries, and seasonally flooded forest — environments characterised by dense riparian shade, leaf litter, submerged wood, and abundant surface cover.

The water chemistry in these habitats is consistently soft and acidic. Temperature across the species' range spans approximately 72–86 °F, with most sources converging on 75–82 °F as the typical band. pH is characteristically low, ranging from around 5.0 to 7.0, with 5.2–6.8 most frequently cited; general hardness is soft, on the order of 1–6 dGH in many blackwater and clearwater systems, though some sources note up to 16 dGH for the broader range. The surface-skimming habit means P. brevis is closely associated with the air–water interface, often sheltering under floating leaves or overhanging vegetation where insect prey accumulates.

Feeding

Pyrrhulina brevis is an opportunistic micropredator and omnivore. In nature it feeds primarily near the surface on tiny invertebrates — zooplankton, small aquatic insect larvae, emerging insects, and terrestrial arthropods that fall onto the water. Its upturned mouth is well suited to intercepting prey at or just below the surface film.

In the aquarium P. brevis accepts a varied diet without difficulty. Small live and frozen foods — Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, micro-worms, and finely chopped bloodworm — are taken eagerly and help maintain colour and condition. Good-quality micro-pellets and crushed flake are also accepted. Because the species habitually feeds from the surface, foods should be offered at or near the waterline; sinking foods may be ignored or left to waste. A diet with a regular live or frozen component brings out the best fin coloration in males.

Mating

Pyrrhulina brevis is a seasonal spawner in which males become strongly territorial during the breeding period. A displaying male occupies and defends a patch of the substrate or a broad leaf surface against rival males, flushing vivid orange across the fins and intensifying the red body spots as part of the threat and courtship display. Rival males are driven off with lateral displays and, if necessary, direct aggression.

Courtship involves the male escorting the female toward the chosen spawning site — typically a broad, firm leaf or a flat surface near the bottom or at mid-water. The pair perform side-by-side passes that result in the deposition of small adhesive egg clusters. Outside the breeding season males are considerably calmer and the intensity of their coloration drops markedly, making condition and lighting as important as sex ratio in drawing out the species' best colours in the aquarium.

Breeding

Unlike most egg-scattering tetras, Pyrrhulina brevis is a substrate-spawner with paternal brood care — a behavioural trait shared across the genus and the broader lebiasinid clade. The male selects a spawning site on a broad leaf, a smooth stone, or a similar flat surface and courts a ripe female there. After spawning, the female's role ends and the male takes sole responsibility for guarding the clutch.

The attending male fans the eggs with his pectoral fins to oxygenate them and actively chases off intruders, including the female. Eggs are adhesive and hatch in approximately two to three days at temperatures in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius. The fry are initially tiny and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as first nourishment before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. To protect eggs and fry from other tank inhabitants, breeding is easiest in a dedicated species tank or a well-planted biotope setup. The male's guarding behaviour is genuine and sustained, making P. brevis one of the more rewarding small characiforms to breed.

In the aquarium

Pyrrhulina brevis is rated as beginner-accessible in most hobbyist accounts, though a biotope-style setup brings out its best behaviour and colours. A tank of 23.5–31.5 in is sufficient for a small group; the species is not a vigorous open-water swimmer and spends much of its time hovering near the surface or among fine-leaved plants. Subdued lighting, a dark substrate, floating plants or surface cover, and a layer of leaf litter give it confidence and replicate the dappled forest-stream conditions it comes from.

Water chemistry should lean soft and acidic: pH 5.5–6.8, general hardness below 10 dGH, and temperature 75–82 °F. The species is peaceful toward dissimilar tankmates but males can be aggressive toward one another when breeding; a species tank or a carefully planned biotope pairing with small, non-competing co-inhabitants works best. Suitable companions include other small lebiasinids, peaceful dwarf cichlids, or small corydoras, provided water-chemistry needs align. Regular small water changes and attention to water quality are important: as a blackwater species it is sensitive to deteriorating conditions.

Conservation

Pyrrhulina brevis has not been formally assessed for the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This is common for many small Amazonian fishes whose taxonomy, range, and population trends have not been the subject of a dedicated review under IUCN criteria. The absence of a formal assessment does not imply the species is secure — it simply means the assessment has not been completed.

The species occupies a broad range across the Amazon basin and its tributaries, spanning six countries, which is a moderately reassuring indicator compared with narrow endemics. The habitats it relies on — forest streams and flooded forests — are threatened across much of Amazonia by deforestation, agriculture, and hydrological modification, and the long-term trajectory of these environments is a concern for the many small fishes that depend on them. For aquarists, sourcing tank-raised specimens reduces pressure on wild populations and is straightforward given the species' willingness to breed in captivity.
