Pyrrhulina rachoviana was described by George S. Myers in 1926. It is placed in the genus Pyrrhulina, the largest group within the family Lebiasinidae, a family of small, slender, surface-oriented characoids confined to South America. The valid name as recorded by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Van der Laan) is Pyrrhulina rachoviana Myers, 1926; because it was described in Pyrrhulina and has remained there, the authority is not parenthesised.
The species belongs to a large and taxonomically complex genus whose members share a slender, pencil-like body, a terminal or slightly upturned mouth adapted for surface feeding, and a strongly oblique swimming posture. Species boundaries within Pyrrhulina have historically been treated inconsistently, and the group as a whole would benefit from a modern morphological and molecular revision. In its family context P. rachoviana sits among the smaller members of the genus, distinguished from its nearest relatives by a combination of colour pattern, meristic characters, and body proportions that have been documented in specialist literature but not restated here from secondary sources.
Morphology
Pyrrhulina rachoviana is a small, slender-bodied fish, reaching a maximum of approximately 1.5 in standard length according to FishBase. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, with a flattened to slightly upturned snout typical of the surface-feeding Pyrrhulina. The dorsal fin is set well back, and the caudal fin is slightly forked. The overall shape is more pencil-like than the deeper-bodied members of Lebiasinidae such as Lebiasina.
Colouration includes a dark lateral stripe running from the snout to the caudal peduncle, typical of the genus, overlaid with reddish or orange tints on the flanks and fins that intensify in displaying males. The body is otherwise pale to silvery, with darker scale margins giving a faintly reticulated look. Females are plainer and rounder-bodied than males, the usual dimorphism seen across Pyrrhulina; males in good condition are noticeably more colourful and slender.
Habitat
Pyrrhulina rachoviana is recorded from Brazil. Like most Pyrrhulina, it is associated with still or slow-flowing water — shallow marginal areas of streams, ponds, and flooded zones — where surface access is maintained and aquatic or emergent vegetation provides cover and spawning substrate. Members of the genus tend to occupy the uppermost water column, often holding a characteristically oblique posture just below the surface film.
Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water typical of lowland Amazonian and Atlantic-drainage habitats is the expected range for this species, though specific water-parameter records for P. rachoviana in the wild are sparse in the accessible literature. Like other small South American lebiasinids, it likely tolerates the seasonal fluctuations — temperature shifts, variations in water chemistry, and changes in water level — that characterise lowland Brazilian freshwater systems.
Feeding
Pyrrhulina rachoviana is an insectivorous micropredator in the wild, taking small invertebrates at and near the water surface. Insects, small crustaceans, and zooplankton form the basis of the diet, with surface insects and fallen terrestrial prey an important component for a fish that habitually holds position just below the surface film. The upturned mouth is an adaptation for snapping prey from the surface rather than foraging at the substrate.
In the aquarium the species adapts readily to offered foods: small live and frozen invertebrates such as Daphnia, newly hatched brine shrimp, and small bloodworm are accepted enthusiastically and improve breeding condition. High-quality micro-pellets and small flake are also taken, though a diet heavy in live or frozen invertebrates produces better colour and readier spawning. Feeding at or near the surface suits its natural posture; sinking foods may be ignored.
Mating
Pyrrhulina rachoviana is an egg-depositing species with paternal care of the spawn, the reproductive strategy typical of Pyrrhulina. Males in spawning condition are visibly brighter and more active, patrolling a territory and displaying to females with fin spreading and colour flashes. Courtship is direct and brief: the male courts a female, leads her to a chosen spawning site — typically a broad leaf or a flat horizontal surface — and spawning occurs with the female releasing adhesive eggs onto the substrate.
The choice of a leaf or flat surface as a spawning site, rather than the plant-scattering method of many related characoids, is the defining feature of Pyrrhulina reproduction. The male then guards and tends the egg mass, fanning the eggs with his fins and defending the site against intruders. This degree of parental investment in a small characoid is notable and makes the genus recognisable even to hobbyists who rarely observe such behaviour in tetras generally.
Breeding
In captivity Pyrrhulina rachoviana can be bred in a small, well-planted tank with broad-leaved plants or flat stones on which eggs can be deposited. Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water and temperatures in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius are recommended, reflecting the soft-water lowland habitats typical of the genus. Conditioning the pair on live and frozen invertebrates brings fish into breeding condition.
Spawning follows the pattern described above: adhesive eggs are deposited on a flat surface, and the male guards the clutch, aerating the eggs by fanning. Eggs hatch after roughly two to three days at typical breeding temperatures, and the male continues to tend the wriggling larvae. Once the fry become free-swimming, adults should be removed to prevent predation. Fry are small and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food initially, progressing to freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as they grow. The species is not frequently bred in large numbers, but breeding accounts from hobbyists confirm the above pattern and note that clutch sizes are modest, typical of small Pyrrhulina.
In the aquarium
Pyrrhulina rachoviana is suited to a small, quiet species or community tank with peaceful, similarly sized tankmates. A densely planted setup with floating plants to diffuse surface light, which reduces stress and encourages the species to venture into open water, works well. Water should be soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral, and temperatures kept in the range typical of Brazilian lowland fishes. A tight-fitting lid is essential — like most surface-dwelling characoids this species is an accomplished jumper.
Because it is a surface fish, companions that occupy the mid and lower water column minimise competition. Small corydoras, dwarf cichlids kept with caution, or other small lebiasinids can work, but a species-only group is simpler and shows the fish's natural behaviour more clearly. Keeping a small group rather than a single pair allows the natural social dynamics and displays to be observed. The species is not commonly seen in the trade and appeals especially to hobbyists interested in smaller, less frequently kept South American characoids.
Conservation
Pyrrhulina rachoviana has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; it carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This is the norm for most small South American characoids, whose distributions and population sizes are poorly documented and which fall outside the scope of systematic conservation assessments that have focused on larger, more commercially or ecologically prominent taxa.
The lack of an assessment does not imply the species is without concern. Lowland Brazilian freshwater habitats face ongoing pressures from agriculture, deforestation and associated sedimentation, and changes to hydrological regimes. Small, localised species that depend on intact marginal vegetation and clean shallow water are inherently vulnerable to these pressures even when not formally evaluated. Wild-caught specimens occasionally appear in specialist trade; hobbyist maintenance of self-sustaining captive populations has conservation value for small species that may be poorly represented in institutional collections.
