Roeboexodon guyanensis was originally described by Puyo in 1948, and the parenthetical authority in the current valid name signals that it has been moved from its original genus since description. The genus Roeboexodon is a small characid genus within the diverse family Characidae; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the authority for the valid name and placement. The species epithet guyanensis is a toponym referencing the Guianas, reflecting the type locality region of the species.
The genus Roeboexodon is not closely related to the large hobbyist genera such as Hyphessobrycon or Hemigrammus and does not fit neatly into the classic 'tetra' grouping, though it is placed within the broader Characidae.
