The gold tetra earns its name from an unusual source: a powdery, metallic golden sheen that coats the flanks of wild-caught specimens and is caused not by pigment but by a subcutaneous reaction to trematode parasites. Tank-bred fish lack the sheen but retain a handsome silvery gleam and the easygoing schooling temperament that has made Hemigrammus rodwayi a quiet staple of the South American tetra trade. Native to coastal floodplains and forest creeks of Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and parts of the greater Amazon basin, it is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN and adapts readily to aquarium life.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemigrammus rodwayi was described by Mary Jane Durbin in 1909, making it one of the earlier Hemigrammus to be formally named during the productive period of South American characid discovery in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Hemigrammus rodwayi Durbin, 1909; the species has remained in Hemigrammus and the authority is not parenthetical.

The genus Hemigrammus, established by Gill in 1858, is one of the largest and most species-rich genera in the family Characidae, with well over 60 recognised species distributed across tropical South America. Members are characterised by a scaled caudal fin (distinguishing them from the closely related Hyphessobrycon, which has a naked caudal), a lateral line that is incomplete or entirely absent in many species, and a generally slender, laterally compressed body plan suited to life in vegetated calm waters. H. rodwayi belongs to a complex of small, silvery Hemigrammus from the Guiana Shield and adjacent lowlands.

Morphology

Hemigrammus rodwayi is a slender, laterally compressed tetra reaching a maximum total length of around 2 in in males and unsexed specimens, with aquarium individuals typically measuring 1.5–2 in. The body is benthopelagic in posture, streamlined, and moderately deep behind the pectoral girdle. A dark, well-defined lateral stripe runs from behind the gill cover to the caudal peduncle, characteristic of many Hemigrammus, and may be flanked by a paler silver band above it.

The most distinctive feature of wild-caught fish is a powdery, iridescent golden or brassy sheen overlying the flanks. This metallic coating is not produced by the fish itself but by a cutaneous reaction to subcutaneous trematode (digenean fluke) larvae, which trigger localised guanine deposition in the skin. The effect varies with parasite load; heavily infected fish can appear almost luminously golden, giving rise to the common name. Captive-bred stock, free of the parasites, lacks the golden bloom and appears silvery to lightly iridescent — still attractive, but distinctly different from wild imports. Sexual dimorphism is subtle; females tend to be slightly deeper-bodied and fuller when ripe, and males may be marginally slimmer.

Habitat

Hemigrammus rodwayi ranges across the coastal lowlands of the Guiana Shield — Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana — and extends into parts of the Amazon basin, with records from Brazil, Venezuela, and Peru. It inhabits coastal creeks, floodplain channels, and still-to-slow-moving waters associated with seasonally inundated forest and savanna. The species shows a notable tolerance for mildly brackish conditions along some coastal reaches, an unusual trait among Hemigrammus.

Natural water conditions span clear, black-water, and white-water environments. Reported parameters from FishBase indicate temperatures of 75–82 °F, pH in the range of around 6.3 or lower to neutral, and moderate hardness of 0–12 °dH. The species favours well-vegetated margins and areas with submerged root tangles, where schools use cover for refuge. It is a midwater schooling fish, neither strongly bottom-associated nor surface-dwelling.

Feeding

Hemigrammus rodwayi is a carnivore biased toward small invertebrates: worms, aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, zooplankton, and organic detritus are reported components of the natural diet. Like most small characids of its size and habitat, it is an opportunistic feeder that takes prey at whatever level of the water column it encounters it, rather than being a strict surface or benthic predator.

In the aquarium the species is undemanding. It accepts good-quality dried flake and micro-pellets readily and benefits from regular supplements of frozen or live foods — Daphnia, artemia, bloodworm, and similar invertebrate items improve condition and bring fish into prime colour. Feeding small amounts twice daily rather than a single large meal suits the species' natural foraging style and helps reduce waste in planted tanks.

Mating

Hemigrammus rodwayi is an egg-scattering, open-spawning characid with no parental investment. Courtship is brief and typical of the genus: a male pursues a ripe female closely through the midwater, driving her toward dense fine-leaved vegetation or other available spawning substrate. There are no elaborate pre-spawning displays or territorial behaviours, and spawning occurs in groups in the wild rather than as isolated pairs.

Eggs are released in small batches and are adhesive, attaching to fine-leaved plants or settling among root masses. Breeding temperature is reported at approximately 79 °F at pH 6 for captive spawnings. As with most Hemigrammus, the adults show no recognition of eggs or fry and will consume them given the opportunity.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Hemigrammus rodwayi is well established — the species has been produced in the ornamental fish trade for decades, and tank-bred stock is widely available. A standard small-characid breeding setup works: a dimly lit, well-planted or moss-filled tank with soft, slightly acidic water at around 79 °F and pH 6, conditioned adults fed generously on live or frozen foods in the days before introduction, and a mesh or dense plant base to protect eggs from the spawners.

Females release adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants or spawning mops in scatter batches. After spawning, adults should be removed promptly. Eggs hatch in approximately 24–36 hours under warm conditions, and the yolk-sac fry become free-swimming within a few days. First foods are infusoria or commercial fry preparations, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as the fry grow. Longevity is reported at up to five years in good aquarium conditions.

In the aquarium

Hemigrammus rodwayi is a calm, peaceful, shoaling tetra that does best in groups of eight or more. Kept in smaller numbers it becomes timid and reclusive; a proper school brings out confident midwater activity and makes the collective silver-gold sheen of wild-caught specimens far more impressive. A tank of 23.5 in or more provides adequate swimming room for a shoal, and the species is well suited to planted community aquaria.

Water should be warm (75–82 °F) and soft to moderately hard, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. The fish tolerates a wider range than these optima, but long-term health and colour are best at the softer end of its tolerance. A well-planted tank with dark substrate, driftwood, and subdued or variable lighting suits the species' Guiana-forest origins and shows wild-caught fish at their most golden. Tankmates can include other small peaceful tetras, rasboras, small corydoras, and similarly sized schooling fishes; it is too mild-mannered to pair with nippy or aggressive species. It is generally hardy and undemanding once settled.

Conservation

Hemigrammus rodwayi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment published on 12 November 2020. The species' wide distribution across the Guiana Shield lowlands and parts of the Amazon basin, its tolerance of varied water conditions including mild salinity in coastal reaches, and its apparent resilience in disturbed habitats all contribute to this favourable status.

No major range-wide threats have been identified. Collection pressure for the ornamental trade is ongoing but not considered to drive population decline at the species level; the Guyana and Suriname wild fisheries for small tetras are long-established and the gold tetra's ability to breed readily in captivity means that tank-bred stock supplements or replaces wild-caught fish in many markets. Habitat degradation in coastal floodplain systems is a background concern across the Guiana region, but the species' current trajectory does not approach Vulnerable thresholds.
