Bryconamericus guyanensis was described by Zarski, Le Bail, and Géry in 2010 in the journal Vertebrate Zoology, as part of a study addressing new and poorly known characiform fishes from French Guiana. The type material was collected from French Guiana river basins, and the species is catalogued under Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as a valid member of the genus Bryconamericus.
The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the family Characidae — the largest and most speciose family of characiform fishes — and encompasses a wide range of small, schooling tetras distributed from Central America through tropical South America. The relationships within Bryconamericus have been subject to ongoing revision, and it remains one of the more taxonomically challenging genera in the family due to the morphological similarity among species.
