Hemibrycon velox is a slender, fast-moving characid from the river basins of northwestern South America, reaching around 4.5 in standard length and named for the speed and vivacity that characterise the genus. Like most of its relatives in Hemibrycon, it inhabits clear, fast-flowing lowland and foothill streams where it schools in open water above sandy or rocky substrates. Relatively little is known about the species in scientific literature, and the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient — reflecting the gap in knowledge rather than confirmed security.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemibrycon velox was described by Georg Dahl in 1964, with the authority cited as Dahl, 1964. The description was produced in collaboration with Francisco Medem and is referenced in the Colombian freshwater fish literature as Dahl and Medem (1964). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, records the species as Hemibrycon velox Dahl, 1964.

The type locality as given in the ETYFish etymological project is the upper Río Chama valley in Venezuela, though FishBase records the species' distribution as the Sinú River basin in Colombia — a discrepancy that may reflect sampling from the broader northern Colombian and Venezuelan lowland ichthyofaunal zone, or a question of holotype versus broader range. The Colombian freshwater fish checklist (Maldonado-Ocampo et al. 2017) lists H. velox among the country's confirmed species, with codes indicating both ornamental trade and uncertain use.

Hemibrycon is a moderately large genus of the family Characidae, distributed widely across river systems in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Peru. Some regional checklists and taxonomic treatments place certain Hemibrycon lineages within or near Stevardiidae, a family erected from within the broader characid radiation; the ETYFish Project treats the genus under that heading. However, following the Catalog of Fishes and the family placement used throughout this atlas, H. velox is placed in Characidae here.

Morphology

Hemibrycon velox reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 4.5 in. Like other members of the genus, it is a slender, fusiform characid built for sustained swimming in current — more pencil-like than deep-bodied, with a moderately forked tail and the small adipose fin characteristic of the family.

The genus-level coloration typically involves a silvery lateral band or stripe running from the operculum toward the caudal peduncle, sometimes with a darker midlateral stripe or series of scales that catch the light differently from the surrounding flank. Detailed morphometric and meristic data specific to H. velox are sparse in the accessible literature, and a full description of pigment pattern awaits comprehensive systematic treatment of the genus.

Habitat

FishBase characterises Hemibrycon velox as a freshwater, benthopelagic, tropical species associated with the Sinú River basin of northwestern Colombia. The Sinú drains the western slopes of the Colombian cordilleras, flowing north through lowland pasture and forest to the Caribbean coast; the river system spans a range of altitudes and includes clear to moderately turbid water over sand, gravel, and rock.

Hemibrycon species generally favour rivers and streams with moderate to strong current, often in the middle column above or near substrate. The ETYFish note that the name velox references quick, colorful movement implies a schooling, active-water ecology consistent with the genus. Precise depth, temperature, and pH data for the natural habitat of H. velox specifically are not recorded in the cached sources; the broad tropical lowland designation suggests warm water throughout the year.

Feeding

No detailed dietary studies of Hemibrycon velox are available in the accessible literature. Based on the genus and family, the species is expected to be a non-guarding, egg-scattering spawner: adults release small, slightly adhesive or non-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over the substrate, then separate, leaving the eggs to develop without parental care. Adults would readily consume eggs if encountered.

For hobbyists attempting breeding, the general Hemibrycon approach — a separate breeding tank with soft-medium water, clumps of fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and well-conditioned adults — would be a reasonable starting point. Fry are initially tiny and require very fine first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Data on clutch size, incubation time, and fry development specific to H. velox are not available in the current literature.

In the aquarium

Hemibrycon velox is listed with an ornamental use code in the Colombian freshwater fish checklist, indicating it enters the aquarium trade at least occasionally, likely from wild-caught Colombian stock. Its active, schooling nature and moderate size (to about 4.5 in SL) make it a fish for a spacious aquarium with good filtration and some current — a tank of at least 39.5 in in length would suit a group of six or more.

As a schooling mid-water swimmer, it is best kept in groups and combined with tankmates of similar size and temperament. Water conditions should reflect a warm, tropical lowland river: temperatures in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius, circumneutral to slightly alkaline pH, and moderate hardness. Detailed care data are sparse, and much of the practical guidance must be extrapolated from the broader Hemibrycon genus and its Characidae relatives. Hobbyists keeping this species would contribute meaningfully to the body of knowledge simply by recording water parameters, behaviour, and any spawning observations.

Conservation

Hemibrycon velox is listed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List as reported by FishBase. A Data Deficient assessment does not indicate the species is secure; it means that insufficient information exists to determine its risk of extinction. Given the biodiversity pressures facing Colombian river systems — including habitat modification from agriculture, cattle ranching, deforestation, and water extraction in the Sinú basin — the absence of assessment data is a concern rather than a reassurance.

The Sinú River and its tributaries have been substantially modified by dams, channelisation, and land-use change in the lowland reaches, and the Urrá Dam in the upper Sinú has altered flow regimes and fish community composition downstream. Whether H. velox populations have been affected by these pressures is unknown. The species' presence in the ornamental trade (however minor) and its occurrence in the Colombian national checklist suggest it is at minimum locally present, but targeted surveys and population assessments are needed before any confident statement about its status can be made.
