Tyttobrycon dorsimaculatus was described by Jacques Géry in 1973 and is currently recognised as a valid species under that authority. It belongs to the genus Tyttobrycon, a small assemblage of miniature characids placed within Characidae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the name as valid; the ITIS taxonomic database records it under the order Characiformes, confirming the authority as Géry, 1973.
The genus Tyttobrycon is notable for its very small body size relative to most characids, and the few species in it tend to occupy lowland South American drainages. T. dorsimaculatus has been recovered from the Rio Madeira basin, one of the major tributaries of the Amazon system.
