Tyttobrycon hamatus is a miniature characid from the upper Amazon basin, reaching little more than 0.5 in standard length — placing it firmly among the smallest vertebrates on Earth. Males are distinguished by a set of bony hooks on the anal fin, a structure shared across the genus and used in courtship, and by a slightly larger olfactory apparatus than females. The species has no established common name in the aquarium hobby and remains a rarity in the trade, better known to ichthyologists than to fishkeepers.

Taxonomy & naming

Tyttobrycon hamatus was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1973 in his work on new and little-known Aphyoditeina from the Amazon basin, published in Studies on the Neotropical Fauna. The type locality lies within the upper Rio Amazonas drainage of South America. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (the authority for valid names) places the species in the genus Tyttobrycon, where it has remained since its original description.

The genus Tyttobrycon belongs to the family Characidae — the enormous New World tetra family — within a grouping of miniaturised Amazonian characids. It is a small genus of diminutive species united by their extremely small adult size, the presence of anal-fin hooks in males, and their occurrence in quiet, slow-moving Amazonian waters. The placement of Tyttobrycon and related miniature genera has been subject to ongoing phylogenetic revision; some classifications have grouped these fishes within Aphyoditeinae or allied assemblages, but Characidae is currently accepted as the family assignment.

Morphology

Tyttobrycon hamatus is among the smallest of all characids. FishBase records a maximum size of 0.5 in standard length, and specimens examined in a comparative study of the genus ranged from approximately 0.5 in SL — confirming the species as a true miniature. The genus maximum across all examined material was under 1 in SL.

The body is slender and translucent in the manner typical of tiny Amazonian characids. The most conspicuous sexually dimorphic features are found on the anal fin of males, which bears bony hooks — a structure characteristic of many male characids and thought to play a role in spawning contact. Males also possess a slightly more developed olfactory apparatus: a study of the genus found nine olfactory lamellae in males versus seven in females, suggesting that olfaction is important in mate detection. Live colouration in the field is not well documented, but small Amazonian characids of this size class are typically silvery and semitransparent with a lateral stripe or scattered melanophores.

Habitat

Tyttobrycon hamatus is recorded from the upper Amazon River basin in South America. FishBase places it in freshwater, pelagic microhabitats within Amazon tributaries. Data on precise collecting localities for this species are sparse in the published literature.

Evidence from related Tyttobrycon species suggests an affinity for lentic or slow-moving conditions — calm streams with muddy-brown water and clay or sand substrates, the type of quiet backwater or marginal habitat common in Amazonian lowlands. Water in such environments tends to be warm, soft to moderately soft, and acidic to circumneutral, consistent with typical blackwater or clearwater Amazonian conditions. Because T. hamatus is a rarely collected miniature, detailed field notes on its microhabitat preferences have not been widely published.

Feeding

No specific feeding data have been published for Tyttobrycon hamatus. At 0.5 in SL the species is constrained by gape size to very small prey items. Miniature Amazonian characids of comparable size are generally considered micropredators or microphagous omnivores, consuming zooplankton, small insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and organic detritus.

In captivity, should the species become available, foods appropriate to its tiny mouth — microcrustaceans such as Daphnia nauplii, infusoria, live Artemia nauplii, and suitably sized commercial micro foods — would be indicated. Its small size makes it vulnerable to competition from larger tankmates at feeding time.

Mating

Tyttobrycon hamatus is presumed to follow the egg-scattering open-spawning mode typical of characids: eggs are scattered among fine-leaved vegetation or over the substrate, the adults provide no parental care, and both eggs and early fry are at risk of predation by the spawning fish themselves.

The presence of bony hooks on the male anal fin — a structure documented in this species and shared across Tyttobrycon — is interpreted as a mechanism facilitating physical contact during spawning, potentially helping the male maintain position relative to the female as eggs and sperm are released. Males also have more olfactory lamellae than females, implying a role for chemical cues in locating receptive partners. Beyond these morphological inferences, the details of courtship behaviour in T. hamatus have not been described.

Breeding

No captive breeding accounts for Tyttobrycon hamatus appear in the published or hobby literature, reflecting its rarity in aquaria. By analogy with other miniature Amazonian characids, breeding would likely involve egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or mops in soft, acidic, warm water. Adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs deposited among vegetation, hatching within a few days, and tiny fry requiring infusoria or rotifers as first foods would be expected.

The extreme small size of adults and fry — the latter presumably measured in fractions of a millimetre at hatch — would make rearing challenging. Any successful captive breeding would represent a significant hobbyist achievement and add considerably to the documented biology of the genus.

In the aquarium

Tyttobrycon hamatus is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade. Its tiny adult size (under 1 in SL) and origin in remote Amazonian tributaries mean it is almost never available commercially, and when collected it is typically as a by-catch in scientific surveys rather than for the ornamental market.

Were it to become available, a species or nano aquarium with very gentle filtration, soft and slightly acidic water, abundant fine-leaved vegetation, and appropriate micro-scale tankmates or a species-only setup would suit its biology. Its miniature proportions place it at real risk of predation or starvation in a community aquarium with standard-sized tetras or other characids. It would be of interest primarily to specialist nano-fish keepers and ichthyologists maintaining living collections.

Conservation

Tyttobrycon hamatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment completed in 2025 (IUCN Red List 2025.2). A previous 2022 assessment had listed the species as Data Deficient (DD), reflecting limited distributional and population data; the upgrade to Least Concern in 2025 indicates that sufficient information has been gathered to conclude that the species does not currently meet thresholds for a threatened category.

The upper Amazon basin, while under increasing pressure from deforestation, agricultural runoff, and artisanal mining, still supports extensive areas of intact habitat. Small, wide-ranging characids in large river systems are generally considered at lower immediate risk than highly range-restricted endemics, though the biology and population dynamics of Tyttobrycon hamatus remain poorly known. Continued survey work and taxonomic attention to miniature Amazonian characids will be important for refining the conservation picture for this and related species.
