Two great rivers meet at Lokoja in central Nigeria: the Niger, having run more than 2,0 mi from the Guinea highlands across the Sahel, and the Benue, swinging in from the Adamawa highlands of Cameroon after 1,249 mi. Their confluence — broad, sandy, the color of milky tea at flood — anchors this FEOW ecoregion, which carries the Niger from below the Inner Delta down to where it breaks apart into the Niger Delta near the coast. The water rises and falls by as much as 33 ft a year on two distinct flood pulses, and the fishes here belong to the Nilo-Sudanian fauna of savanna Africa: lungfish, bichirs, tilapias and a handful of cichlids built for sandbanks, rapids and seasonal floodplains rather than the deep clear lakes farther east.
Geography & hydrology
FEOW ranks this as Ecoregion 505, the Lower Niger - Benue, and draws its boundaries to enclose the lower and middle Niger below the Inner Niger Delta (508) together with the entire Benue basin, ending where the river fans out into the Niger Delta (506). It is classed as a system of tropical and subtropical floodplain rivers and wetland complexes, and on paper it touches eight countries — Nigeria, Niger, Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Cameroon, Chad and the Central African Republic — though the heart of it is Nigerian. The Niger here threads regions as different as dry rocky narrows and southern rainforest; the Benue rises in the Adamawa Massif of northern Cameroon and runs west for about 1,249 mi before joining the Niger near Lokoja, roughly 280 mi above the delta (FEOW 505; Welcomme 1986).
Unlike the two deltas that bracket it, this stretch is a river of broad channels and shifting sandbanks rather than vast wetlands. Floodplains are limited and patchy. None exist along the 460-km reach between Ayourou and the Mekrou confluence; below that, before the Kainji Dam, the floodplains add up to about 5,673 km2 at high water and shrink to roughly 2,062 km2 in the dry season. The relatively modest floodplain area, compared with the Inner Niger Delta upstream, is a consequence of flood attenuation as water passes through that earlier wetland. Swamps form in old riverbeds fed by groundwater and rain, and gallery forest of Cola laurifolia and Khaya senegalensis lines the Niger where it crosses Benin (FEOW 505; John et al. 1993; Hughes & Hughes 1992).
What makes the hydrology distinctive is that the river floods twice. Downstream of Niamey the regime is bimodal. Rain falling within Nigeria, mainly in the Sokoto and Malendo catchments, drives the larger 'white flood' of August to October, its waters milky with kaolinitic clay. Months later, in December and January, the 'black flood' arrives — darker, solute-rich water that originated far upstream and has already dropped most of its silt in the Inner Delta. The Benue contributes a single annual rise, peaking in August and September as the Adamawa rains run off, and reaching the Niger in October. Below the confluence these pulses combine, so the lower Niger begins rising in May or June, about a month ahead of the middle river, with a slighter secondary bump in January from the upper Niger. Between high and low water the level can swing about 33 ft (FEOW 505; Britannica, Niger River hydrology; Hughes & Hughes 1992).
Water & habitat
This is large-river country: warm, turbid in flood, well mixed, with sand the dominant substrate. Much of the silt and dissolved load the Niger carries out of the Guinea highlands is dropped in the Inner Delta or taken up by aquatic plants upstream, so the water entering this ecoregion is comparatively clear at first; what muddies the lower river is the local 'white flood,' loaded with pale kaolinitic colloids washed off the Sokoto and Malendo catchments. The two flood pulses therefore look different in the water itself — a milky season and a darker, clearer, more mineral-rich one — and the river's chemistry shifts with them through the year (FEOW 505; John et al. 1993).
The dry season is the hard time, and the fishes show it. As the floods recede, channels shrink to sandy reaches and isolated pools, and oxygen in stagnant water can fall to levels that would kill most fishes elsewhere. The Nilo-Sudanian fauna is built for exactly this. Lungfish (Protopterus) breathe air and can wait out drought sealed in a mucus cocoon in the drying mud; bichirs (Polypterus) gulp surface air through a lung-like swim bladder; the catfish Heterobranchus has branched accessory breathing organs, the climbing-perch relative Ctenopoma kingsleyae a suprabranchial organ, and Gymnarchus a vascularized gut, all of them ways to mine oxygen from water that has almost none. Small surface-film fishes — killifishes of Epiplatys, Aphyosemion and the lampeyes — carry upturned mouths and flattened heads to skim the thin oxygenated layer at the top (FEOW 505; Leveque 1997; Lowe-McConnell 1985).
Habitat sorts along the length of the river. Sandbanks and broad sandy channels dominate the middle reaches; rocky shoals and rapids appear in places, most famously around the old Bussa rapids now drowned beneath Kainji Lake; the Benue brings its own savanna-fed floodplains in its upper thousand kilometers. As the Niger runs southeast past Onitsha rainfall climbs toward 1,15.5 in a year and the river enters the coastal rainforest belt, the channel margins thickening with forest before the water reaches the brackish, tidal threshold of the delta. That downstream gradient — savanna river to forest river to estuary — is why this ecoregion holds both arid-zone specialists and forest-edge cichlids, and why marine strays such as mullet (Mugil cephalus), Pomadasys and the sole Cynoglossus push as much as 311 mi upstream on the tide-and-flood, with sleeper gobies (Eleotris) recorded near Lokoja (FEOW 505; Britannica; Welcomme 1986).
The cichlid fauna
Cichlids are a minor presence here by number — this is a fauna of catfishes, characins, mormyrids and bichirs — but the ones that live here are a good cross-section of West and Nilo-Sudanian Africa, and a couple are genuinely unusual. The roster runs from open-river generalists to a rapids specialist found almost nowhere else.
Chromidotilapia guntheri, Gunther's mouthbrooder, is the classic large cichlid of the system. A stocky biparental mouthbrooder that sifts sand for invertebrates and detritus, it ranges widely across West Africa from Liberia to Cameroon and is well established through the Niger and the Benue, the kind of adaptable eartheater that copes with the river's seasonal extremes. Sharing the broad savanna river are the two big jewel-and-tilapia lineages: Hemichromis fasciatus, the banded jewel cichlid, a pugnacious predator of smaller fishes along vegetated margins; and the mouthbrooding tilapias Sarotherodon galilaeus and Sarotherodon melanotheron, both important food fishes. S. galilaeus is a paternal (often biparental) mouthbrooder spread across the Nilo-Sudan zone, while S. melanotheron is a brackish-tolerant species of the coastal and delta gradient at the river's southern end. Tylochromis sudanensis, a deep-bodied sand-sifting cichlid of the Tylochromis radiation, rounds out the larger fauna in the lower reaches.
The smaller cichlids belong to the forest-edge and delta end of the gradient. Pelvicachromis silviae is a dwarf 'krib' tied to the lower Niger and the Delta region in Nigeria, living in shaded, soft-water creeks and leaf litter; Thysochromis ansorgii, a sturdier cave-spawner, ranges through forested coastal lowlands into the Niger Delta and the Ethiop River. Both are creatures of the tannic, slow tributaries rather than the open river.
The standout is Gobiocichla wonderi, a rheophilic cichlid shaped almost like a goby or a small loach — elongate, flattened, built to hold position in fast water. Described in 1951 (with a type locality at Markala on the Niger in Mali), it lives wedged in rocky rapids of the Niger system, a niche otherwise occupied here by non-cichlids, and it is assessed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, a status that matters given how much of the river's fast water has been dammed. Endemism in the wider ecoregion sits not with these cichlids but with two other fishes FEOW singles out: Dagetichthys lakdoensis, the only freshwater sole native to Africa, restricted largely to the upper Benue, and the freshwater stingray Dasyatis garouaensis, confined to the Lower Niger - Benue and the delta below it (FEOW 505; Cichlid Room Companion; FishBase; Leveque, Paugy & Teugels 1991).
Conservation
The defining pressure on this ecoregion is that its flood pulse — the thing the whole fauna is timed to — is now controlled by dams and amplified by their failures. On the Nigerian Niger, the Kainji Dam closed in 1969 and the Jebba Dam followed in 1984, drowning the Bussa rapids and converting a long reach of free-flowing river into reservoir. Downstream fishers felt it immediately: recorded catches at Jebba fell from about 19.6 thousand tonnes in 1967 to 12.2 thousand in 1969 as the dam cut off the flood signals that cue spawning and migration. Several fishes here run long distances to breed on the floodplains during the wet season — one tagged Brycinus leuciscus moved some 249 mi — and a river broken into impoundments interrupts those journeys (FEOW 505; Welcomme 1986; FAO fisheries records).
The Benue side of the confluence is governed from across the border by Cameroon's Lagdo Dam, and the interaction of dam releases with extreme rainfall has produced Nigeria's worst flood disasters. In 2012 the combined Niger and Benue floods, swollen by upstream releases, killed 363 people and displaced over 2.1 million, with the national emergency agency counting nearly 3.9 million affected — the country's most damaging floods in decades, and Lokoja at the confluence was among the hardest-hit points. The pattern repeated in 2022, when more than 600 people died and roughly 1.4 million were displaced, again with Lagdo releases onto an already brimming Benue named as an aggravating factor. For fishes these events cut both ways: huge floods reconnect floodplains and can boost recruitment, but the destruction, pollution and erratic timing that come with dam-driven surges are a poor substitute for the natural seasonal rhythm (GFDRR 2012 PDNA; relief and emergency reporting; Britannica).
At the river's southern threshold sits a separate and severe problem. As the lower Niger gives way to the Niger Delta, decades of oil extraction have left one of the most contaminated freshwater-to-estuarine zones in Africa. UNEP's assessment of Ogoniland documented oil in creeks, swamps and groundwater and called the damage to mangroves — the nursery habitat for many delta and lower-river fishes — disastrous, with knock-on losses to fisheries that local communities depend on. Onshore in the river proper, studies at the Lokoja confluence have flagged heavy-metal loads in water and in food fishes, a reminder that pollution is not only a delta story. Overfishing, sand mining and the squeeze of irrigation withdrawals add to the toll. The ecoregion's most distinctive endemics — the freshwater sole of the upper Benue, the Garoua stingray, the rapids-bound Gobiocichla — are precisely the fishes least able to absorb a river that is dammed, dirtied and stripped of its seasonal flood (FEOW 505; UNEP Ogoniland 2011; academic surveys of the Niger-Benue confluence).
