Barbodes baoulan is a small cyprinid barb that was endemic to Lake Lanao in Mindanao, Philippines — a crater lake of exceptional antiquity and biological richness that once harboured a near-complete cyprinid radiation found nowhere else on Earth. Described by Albert Herre in 1926, baoulan was regarded as the most highly prized food fish of the Lanao plateau and was unusual among the lake's barbs for inhabiting deeper water than any other member of the endemic cyprinid assemblage. It has not been recorded since 1991 and is assessed as Extinct by the IUCN, a casualty of the catastrophic and well-documented collapse of the Lake Lanao fish community driven by introduced predators, overfishing, habitat degradation, and pollution.

Taxonomy & naming

Barbodes baoulan was described by the American ichthyologist Albert William Herre in 1926, based on material collected from Lake Lanao in Mindanao in the Philippine archipelago. The species was placed in the genus Barbodes, which belongs to the family Cyprinidae and the subfamily Smiliogastrinae. The Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences) records the valid name as Barbodes baoulan Herre, 1926, and the species is not known to have been synonymised or reassigned since its original description.

The Lake Lanao cyprinid flock is one of the most celebrated — and now most tragically lost — examples of freshwater species radiation in Southeast Asia. At its peak the lake harboured around 18 endemic cyprinid species in the genera Barbodes and Ospatulus, all derived from a common ancestor that colonised the isolated crater basin. Baoulan was one of several Barbodes species endemic to Lanao; most or all are now extinct. Older literature sometimes placed Philippine barbs in the genus Puntius, but current taxonomy, following the subfamily-level revisions of recent decades, recognises Barbodes as a valid genus for this Southeast Asian group.

Morphology

Barbodes baoulan reached approximately 4.5 in in standard length, placing it among the larger members of the Lanao barb assemblage. Detailed morphological descriptions from Herre's original account and subsequent ichthyological literature characterise it as a typical deep-bodied Barbodes with the compressed lateral profile and moderately large scales characteristic of the genus.

Beyond its reported size, fine morphological details are not well documented in sources available to modern researchers, a reflection of the species' rarity even in historical collections — it was rarely encountered at the surface except under unusual weather conditions. Its status as the deepest-living cyprinid of Lake Lanao is the most ecologically distinctive feature recorded for the species.

Habitat

Lake Lanao is a large, deep crater lake situated at approximately 2297 ft elevation on the Lanao Plateau of Mindanao, Philippines. It is one of the oldest lakes in Southeast Asia and was colonised by cyprinids that subsequently diversified into a species flock adapted to the lake's varied depth zones and food resources.

Barbodes baoulan was a deep-water specialist — the deepest-living cyprinid documented from Lake Lanao according to Herre (1933). The species was rarely observed near the surface under normal conditions; it approached the shallows only when unusually high waves stirred the water during storms or midwinter swells. FishBase records water parameters of approximately 75 °F and pH 6.5 with a hardness of around 5 dH, consistent with the soft, slightly acidic waters characteristic of Philippine highland lakes.

Feeding

The diet of Barbodes baoulan in the wild is not documented in detail in the available literature, which is unsurprising given the species' cryptic deep-water lifestyle and its extinction before modern diet studies were conducted on the Lake Lanao fish assemblage.

As a member of the genus Barbodes and family Cyprinidae, baoulan was almost certainly an omnivore in the broad sense typical of the group — consuming invertebrates, organic detritus, and plant or algal material from the lake bottom and water column. Its deep-water niche suggests it may have specialised on benthic invertebrates or profundal organic matter, resources less accessible to the shallower-living species of the same flock, but this remains inferred from ecology rather than confirmed by stomach-content or stable-isotope data.

Mating

No observations of spawning behaviour in Barbodes baoulan are recorded, and its deep-water habit made it effectively inaccessible to researchers during the period when the Lake Lanao fish community was being studied. As a member of the family Cyprinidae in the broad barb lineage, it is expected to have been an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the manner typical of all barbs.

In this reproductive guild, sexually mature fish come together in loose aggregations and scatter adhesive eggs over substrate or vegetation, with milt released simultaneously. There is no nest construction, no territory held through the breeding season, and no parental care of any kind. Given the species' ecological affinities and the universal pattern in Barbodes and related genera, these features are inferred with confidence even in the absence of direct observation.

Breeding

No captive breeding or detailed reproductive data exist for Barbodes baoulan. The species was never established in aquaculture or held in aquaria, and it became effectively uncontactable in its native deep-water habitat before any systematic study of its reproduction could be conducted.

Consistent with all other barbs, breeding is inferred to have involved egg-scattering with no parental care: adults would have released eggs and milt over suitable substrate, after which the adhesive eggs were left to develop unattended. No spawning aggregation, breeding season, or fecundity estimate has been published for this species.

In the aquarium

Barbodes baoulan was never kept in the aquarium hobby and is not available in any form. The species was extirpated from its only known locality, Lake Lanao, and the last confirmed wild record dates to 1991. It is assessed as Extinct by the IUCN and has not been the subject of any captive-breeding or ex-situ conservation programme.

The deep-water ecology of baoulan would in any case have made it a challenging candidate for aquarium husbandry even under different circumstances. Its primary cultural significance was as a food fish of the highest local esteem on the Lanao Plateau, where it was caught using Marinao gill nets when storm-driven waves temporarily brought individuals toward the surface.

Conservation

Barbodes baoulan is assessed as Extinct (EX) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2020 based on an evaluation conducted in November 2019. The last confirmed record of the species is from 1991. It is one of numerous endemic cyprinids lost from Lake Lanao in what constitutes one of the most severe freshwater extinction events documented in the Asia-Pacific region.

The collapse of the Lanao fish community has been attributed to a combination of pressures acting over several decades: the deliberate introduction of non-native predatory fishes (including flier, carp, and various tilapia and snakehead species) that preyed on or outcompeted the endemic fauna; intensive subsistence and commercial gill-netting that reduced populations already stressed by biotic change; progressive eutrophication from agricultural runoff and sedimentation from deforestation on the watershed; and direct pollution from urban and industrial sources around the lake margin. Baoulan's deep-water niche may have offered some initial buffer against shallow-water predators and nets, but ultimately the scale of ecosystem disruption was sufficient to eliminate even this ecologically specialised species. No living individuals are known to exist in the wild or in captivity.
