Barbodes amarus is a small Philippine cyprinid that lived nowhere on earth except Lake Lanao, a high-altitude volcanic crater lake on the island of Mindanao. Described by Albert Herre in 1924 and known locally as the pait or dipura, the species reached about 4.5 in in standard length and fed on detritus along the lake floor. The last confirmed record dates to 1982; it has not been found in any subsequent survey and is assessed by the IUCN as Extinct. Its disappearance is part of the near-total collapse of Lake Lanao's endemic fish fauna, driven by introduced predators and competitors, overfishing, and watershed degradation — one of the most severe freshwater extinction events recorded in the Philippines.

Taxonomy & naming

Barbodes amarus was described by the American ichthyologist Albert William Herre in 1924 from specimens collected in Lake Lanao, Mindanao, Philippines, in a paper published in the Philippine Journal of Science. Herre originally placed the species in the genus Puntius, and for most of the twentieth century it was carried in the literature as Puntius amarus.

Following the revision of Southeast Asian barbs by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage (2012), the large heterogeneous assemblage formerly grouped under Puntius was split into several more natural genera. Under that revision, and as recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer), the valid combination is Barbodes amarus Herre, 1924. The genus Barbodes is centred on the Philippine archipelago and includes several other Lake Lanao endemics, many of which are similarly extinct or critically endangered.

The species epithet amarus is Latin for "bitter", possibly referring to the taste of the flesh as described by local fishers, though Herre did not explain the etymology explicitly.

Morphology

Barbodes amarus was a moderately sized barb reaching up to 4.5 in in standard length, with females reported to attain the larger size. In preserved specimens the colouration is brownish dorsally, grading to yellowish on the flanks and belly, with an overall silvery lustre — a pattern typical of many lacustrine Barbodes in the Philippines.

The species shares the generalised barb body plan: a laterally compressed, moderately deep body with a terminal mouth, a single dorsal fin, and small cycloid scales. Beyond these generalities, detailed morphological data are sparse in accessible literature, a consequence of the species' early extinction and the limited material collected before its disappearance.

Habitat

Lake Lanao sits at approximately 2303 ft above sea level in the Lanao del Sur province of Mindanao and is the second largest lake in the Philippines. It is a tectonic lake of volcanic origin with a surface area of around 211 mi² and considerable depth, supporting clear, warm, moderately buffered freshwater — a setting quite different from the soft acidic blackwater of Sundaland lowlands.

Barbodes amarus was detritivorous and appears to have occupied the benthic zone of the lake, foraging along the substrate. Water conditions at Lake Lanao are broadly tropical, with temperatures around 77 °F and a pH near neutral (approximately 7). The lake was historically one of the most species-rich freshwater systems in the Philippines, harbouring a large radiation of endemic cyprinids that evolved in isolation.

Feeding

FishBase characterises Barbodes amarus as detritivorous — feeding on organic detritus settled on the lake bed. This feeding mode is common among the benthic Barbodes of Lake Lanao and aligns with the lake's nutrient dynamics, where decaying plant material and fine organic particles accumulate in the littoral and sublittoral zones.

In the absence of living specimens or detailed gut-content analyses, finer dietary data are unavailable. It is probable that, like related cyprinids, the species also ingested algae, small invertebrates, and microbial biofilm as part of its substrate-sifting behaviour.

Mating

No observations of courtship or spawning behaviour were made for Barbodes amarus before its extinction. Based on the uniform reproductive biology of the barb clade to which it belongs, the species was almost certainly an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Barbs of the genus Barbodes and their relatives broadcast adhesive eggs over substrate or vegetation without forming a nest and provide no parental care.

In related lacustrine barbs, courtship involves a driving male pursuing a ripe female through the water column or along the substrate, briefly pressing together to release eggs and milt. No pair bond is established and adults disperse immediately after spawning.

Breeding

No captive breeding of Barbodes amarus was achieved or documented. Given the species' extinction in the early 1980s before ex-situ conservation programmes were established for the Lake Lanao fauna, no living stock has been maintained.

By analogy with closely related Philippine Barbodes, the species likely deposited adhesive eggs over gravel, sand, or aquatic vegetation in the lake's shallow littoral margins, with no parental care and no guarding of eggs or fry. Fecundity and developmental timings are unknown.

In the aquarium

Barbodes amarus has never been established in the aquarium hobby. The species was a large-lake endemic that disappeared before it could be collected for the trade in any meaningful way, and it is now extinct in the wild with no surviving captive population.

It is included here for completeness as part of the record of the Lake Lanao barb radiation — a group that represents one of the most striking examples of island freshwater endemism in Southeast Asia and one of the most complete freshwater extinction events in the Philippines.

Conservation

Barbodes amarus is assessed as Extinct (EX) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated by Torres et al. in 2020 (assessment ID T18882A192624745). The last confirmed record of the species is from 1982; repeated subsequent surveys of Lake Lanao have failed to detect it.

The collapse of the Lake Lanao endemic cyprinid fauna is one of the most documented freshwater extinction events in Asia. The principal drivers were the introduction of alien predatory and competing fish — most notably flowerhorn cichlids, tilapia, carp, and the predatory sea perch Lates calcarifer — combined with intensive overfishing, increased siltation from watershed deforestation, and agricultural runoff degrading water quality. Of the approximately 18 endemic cyprinid species historically recorded from Lake Lanao, the majority are now extinct or critically endangered, making Barbodes amarus one among a cohort of lost endemics rather than an isolated loss.
